Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

GotG2 took the mean-spirited misogynistic Drax humor of the first movie and amped it up - that soured me on whatever other things it got right.

I'll largely agree with that. Everything they were trying to do with that character fell flat on its face in that movie.

Agree with everyone on GotG2 forcing in comedy whereas the first one had more organic humor. Drax goes from straight-man to cracking jokes at every opportunity, and develops a bizarre inability to remember the names of things.

It was also too heavy-handed on the theme of FAMILY. Every other scene was beating you over the head with it, like Peter listening to "Father and Son", Nebula shouting, "I just wanted a sister!" Even the prison scene with Yondu and Rocket ended up being about FAMILY.

Blade is the best Marvel movie.

Don't @ me.

How could I @ someone with such questionable taste?

You are missing the 2 in the title.

Yeah, well some of us can't see in the dark, you f*cking nipplehead. What am I supposed to do?

I’m surprised to see Ragnorok placing so highly, especially next to concerns about forced comedy in GotG2. Maybe I just watched it when I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, or maybe I was expecting something other than what I got. Personally, I found Ragnarok to be bizarre tonally, and very out of keeping with the other MCU movies. I get that the different movies can go in different directions and still feel coherent, but I didn’t find that buddy cop-fish out of water-slapstick worked for a Marvel movie about the goddess of death and where they destroy a planet. (You know, ish. )

You know, maybe that’s it. Not that the style couldn’t work within the MCU, but rather that the style didn’t match the content. Jeff Goldblum and “Piss off, ghost!”? Comedy action. Hela and the slaughter of innocents? Not so much.

I totally agree that the tone was way off course from the previous movies, but despite liking all of the others, I found Ragnarok fun and the most enjoyable of them all. It was nice to see Hulk get some real screen time as well. He might not have made a good lead (at least so far), but Ragnarok (to me) demonstrated that he can be much more than just marginalized background noise. By comparison, I'm not really sure why they ever even bothered to introduce Jane.

I think it really depends on what you're trying to get out of watching it. If all you want is buddy cop / fish out of water / Jeff Goldblum / "piss off, ghost," then the stuff about the goddess of death and the fate of the people of Asgard is pretty inoffensive.

If you go in wanting an epic tale about the goddess of death and the fate of the people of Asgard, then all the yuk-yuk stuff is probably pretty obtrusive.

Personally I'm in the former camp and thought the movie was fine-- forgettable, but fun-- but I don't begrudge anyone in the latter camp for not liking what they got.

“I know...!”
“We’re not doing ‘Get help’.”
“What?! Come on, you used to love ‘Get help’.”

Karl Urban with a Shake-Weight.

“I know what you’re thinking... ‘oh no! Thor’s in a cage. How did this happen?’”

Everything with Korg. EVERYTHING.

I love Ragnarok so much

All fair points, but Waititi has a history of tragi-comic work. I went in expecting Hunt for the Wilderpeople with a budget orders of magnitude bigger, and Ragnarok delivered.

If you went in expecting anything else then I can see why it would be disconcerting. But the promos. trailer, even the logo, set up exactly what we were going to get.

I wish they'd cut Goldblum out of Ragnarok. He was an obnoxious, constant distraction. (For that matter, I wasn't really that fond of Korg.)

Spoiler:

I have no heart.

So what is it like being wrong in so many ways??
Without him there could be no rebellion.

I'm just glad Doug isn't around to hear that.

I pardon you... I pardon you, from life.

The marketing for Deadpool movies is about as fun as the movies.

Agreed on all counts. I felt like it finally made the most of Hemsworth's innate comedic abilities.

Oh, and let's add everything with Jeff Goldblum because unlike ClockworkHouse I DO have a heart and it's filled with nothing but love for Mr. Goldblum.

Waste of a good heart, I say.

Was hoping for more Captain Marvel.

I didn't expect to see her before her movie released.

I am just up to the part where Black Widow says he killed 50% of all living creatures and I thought - holy crap that would kill your digestive tract. Seriously we would all be dead if 50% of our internal bacteria was suddenly gone.

And now that I have finished it - it was great as far as trailers go. Basically no information except that they are going to try something to reverse the snap. So anyone could watch and not have the upcoming movie spoiled. Nice

Like Tom said, I suspect there will be no mention of her in the trailers until after hers comes out. I expect her post-credit trailer to show her getting the message from SHIELD, and she will show up partway through the Avengers movie.

Ragnarok had me at Immigrant Song.

Also: "From someplace on Midgard called TEX-azz. These are Dez. And Troy."

But we're all clearly missing the BEST MCU movie, which is Civil War because it has the most quintessential Cap/superhero/Marvel line.

Tony's beating the crap out of Steve and he crawls back to his feet..."I can do this all day."

You can argue for "great power/great responsibility" as a better overall comics line (and I do) but in terms of an actual movie scene with a line that sums up the scene, film, character, series and what it means to do the right thing (which is the whole point of having the superhero genre in the first place), Steve Rogers getting back up to defend his friend against his other friend no matter what is glorious.

It is why Cap is the best.

It is also an excellent call back to the first Captain America movie.

It's also a callback to Cap 1.

Exactly. Regardless of powers, regardless of circumstances, it's who Steve is. And that's what makes a hero a hero.

Another great cheesy Cap moment:
