Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Smash All

I'll probably do a classic run with some familiar characters in order to get a feel for the game and how it works on the Pro Controller, then do some World of Light. I'll probably need to download Discord onto my phone since I can't carry my laptop everywhere. Or I might finally dig my speakers up from storage so I don't have to have headphones connected to the TV at all times.

It feels silly that I'll probably use my phone anyway, even if I'm not using Nintendo's voice app.

Well, I got the alert from Best Buy that the game has shipped, so I guess we're on track for this thing to happen. Preordering (which is something I rarely do these days) came with a $10 coupon, and I'm seriously torn between using this for the fighter pass (which would be $15), or on Mario+Rabbids (which would be $10).

I’m considering bringing my Switch to work and setting it up in the cafeteria during My lunch hour to see if anyone wants to play Smash. I’m unsure of the social implications of doing so, though, so I’m still on the fence.

I'd play with you

For what it’s worth, we have a full 10-12 people at my new workplace that are bringing in multiple switches to play on lunch. Might get weird looks, bbbuuuttt it’s Smash so don’t care

Did anyone request a voice channel in the discord yet?

Yep a page or so back. Seems they want us to use the #fighting channel for now.

Reviews up this morning.

Probably more but those popped up in my news feed.

US Gamer Review in Progress

This version of Smash Bros. is just a smidge heavier than the Wii U game; you can feel it in the way that characters move through the air and on the ground. It's also far harder to launch and kill opponents—traditionally the primary means by which you eliminate enemies.

I have had a love/hate relationship with the most recent iterations of Smash because of the floaty physics and easy ring-outs, so this tidbit excites me more than any character reveal ever could. Can't wait to dig in.

Just got my copy through the post, they really weren't kidding when they said you'd have to unlock the characters! Not much choice at the start.

Saw someone on CAG mentioned getting the Japanese eShop version and playing already.

Ah well. Already used console pre order code. Guess I'm waiting until midnight.

Still no way to pre purchase the DLC separately so no way for bonus gold coins. Think I should have sold my code and bought the combo pack after all. Oh well.

10.30 pm here and I can confirm that my digital copy doesn't work yet!

I can also confirm that I caved and ordered myself the Smash Pro Controller earlier today...

Physical copy arrived this evening, but I'm having trouble getting the update to take. I wasn't able to download a latest version of rocket league either, so it may just be on my end.

Checking in again, after about 2-3 hours with the game, playing only the Classic mode. It only took one round to get back into the swing of things, which says alot about the game design. A few impressions in spoilers:

Spoiler:

-I unlocked 8 characters, and they seem to be random (King K Rool was my first)
-The new bonus round of run and collect the coins seems to be the same every time, and will get tedious fast
-Some of the bosses at the end of each classic mode are ho hum or just the master hand again, but some, like Link, Kirby, and Yoshi, are much, much better or more inspired. Link's boss kicked my butt good, although I was also definitely out of practice at that point.

Joker from Persona 5 is the first DLC character.

I would have preferred one of the supporting party members that isn't just a blank slate, but that's still pretty cool. It'll be interesting to see how they translate Persona attacks into Smash.

I really hope that means that P5 is coming to the switch eventually.

I'm 10 battles in, 1 classic mode run, and I've not yet touched adventure. I'm really enjoying it. Unlocked fighters so far. Don't really have one of my favorites yet, so more reason to keep trying to unlock more. Definitely feels like a solid Smash game, though in truth Brawl was my only real foray into Smash.

Did a scan of all my amiibo. Wolf Link unlocked Midna support, which gets some enhancement at 99. So I'll be using it for a while.

Metroid unlocked another very good support, health after KO.

Mario Wedding unlocked a new costume. Peach Wedding unlocked another support that heals. Can't use two of same type apparently so she's bumped for Metroid.

What I wonder is if I can use their spirits as level up fodder and then resummon them once a day or something? Or if once is it. Don't want to waste them if they're hard to find

I wonder if you can unlock those costumes without amiibo

There is just... so much to do. Wow.

Playing around with spirit board and still getting challenger approaching every so often.

Lost a fight to inkling girl but a bit later unlocked the menu to re challenge, so got her now.

Finished one classic mode with Samus. The credits game in this version is my favorite ever I think.

Another couple of thoughts on Classic mode. Spoilers, just in case:

Spoiler:

I absolutely love that the classic mode is now a set of themed battles, like King K Rool taking on a bunch of heavy weights, or Kirby taking on a bunch of big eaters with food spawning on the ground and spicy curry always showing up, or Pikachu getting to fight all the other pokemon and pokeballs falling like rain. I didn't realize how good a themed classic mode could be until they did it. It actually makes me want to do all of them just to see what they came up with, and who gets unique boss battles at the end.

I played a couple quick matches when it unlocked last night. Haven't played Smash since the Wii version, and even then not too much.

Does anyone change the controls? Jumping with x/y felt weird. Or rather, my platforming instincts made me want to jump with B.

Granted, I need to play more first. Just curious what everyone else's preferred setup is. I'd seen quite a few mentions of mapping jump to a trigger.

Played 20 minutes before work in Adventure mode. So no platforming? Just fights in adventure mode?

If you're like me and purchased this digitally, you might be interested in printing the manual.

So much! I love it. I've tried out a few different modes and I'm enjoying everything I've seen so far.

I've made it so Up doesn't mean Jump, I don't remember that being in previous versions and it really threw me off at first.

I agree completely Sundown. I played as Link and really liked how it went.

Hopefully this will be waiting for me when I get home. Hype hype hype!

Here's the trailer for the announcement of Joker in Smash Bros.

I wasn't expecting my Smash Pro Controller till the 17th cause I only ordered it yesterday, but apparently it'll be here tomorrow!

HYPE!

Just picked up my copy as well. Haven’t gotten a chance to play it yet even though I brought my Switch to work.
