Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

Falcon and Bucky show sounds fantastic to me. I think it does for the majority of people that were into the movies and liked their interactions. I could be wrong though, not like I took a pole.

I mean, they could still be good. I'm loving the sh*t out of She-Ra right now, and it's not like that had wonderful source material. But Daredevil, Luke Cage, the Punisher? Those characters could carry movie franchises by themselves, and were probably better choices than some of the existing tent-poles. I clearly don't understand something about Marvel's IP contracts.

You shut up.

Point one:. There is no need to fight; Iron Man 2 and 3 are both terrible.

Point two: Me want Captain Marvel NOW.

Well, you're two thirds right

I'm not watching that video, but I assume that this is the thread referenced?

The poster seems to know what they are talking about even if we can't be sure how accurate it is.

Simply put, carrying on is bad business for everyone involved. No amount of fan social media complaining is going to change viewership numbers.

Because it's not a choice between those options?

To add, watched the Captain Marvel trailer, it's great, but I regret it. I now know more than I need to before watching.

What are the must own MCU movies? Holidays are coming and I am looking for gifts for my marvel loving family who don't really buy movies.

Talking about Rocket and Groot.

Hmm. Iron Man 1, Captain America 1, Winter Soldier; Thor 1, Ragnarok, Guardians 1, Avengers 1, and maybe Doctor Strange or Ant-Man.

My favorites - the ones I watch over and over

Avengers
Captain America: Winter Solider
Ant-Man
Thor: Ragnarok
Iron Man
Black Panther
and
Spiderman: Homecoming

Ragnarok is so Thor-damn good

Guardians 1, and 2, are fun re-watches.

Are you me?

I would add Guardians 1 to the list. Do Deadpool and Deadpool 2 count?

It's a pity Ant Man and the Wasp is so meh, because I love Evangeline Lilly's take on that character.

Like the Beatles done by Nickelback.....:)

This is perfect, except I would add Guardians 2 as well. For some reason people don't seem to like that one as much as the first, but I thought the relationships and the plotline were a lot more natural than in the first movie.

If I had to narrow it down to 3, I'd say Thor Ragnarok, and two copies of Thor Ragnarok.

This

Ragnorak, Iron Man, Avengers, guardians 1 and 2, and another Ragnorak for when the first one gets watched too many times and stops playing.

I also don't understand the lack of love for Guardians 2 by some. I literally just watched it again yesterday and it was still great. I'd argue it had the better villain in Ego. Much like you said, the relationships explored were much better than in the first. Starlord with his Father and Yondu, as well as his relationship with Gamora. Plus her relationship with her sister Nebula, who after everything is still her sister.

I had one friend who fancies himself an amateur movie critic that argues with me that it's the worst of Marvel's movies... he also told me Jaws sucks. I don't talk to him about movies anymore.

I love G2, but I get the criticisms. It's not the original and it is trying to do more. Trying to do more means more times that might not work. And there are definitely some oddly paced moments in the movie.
And while I like Gamora and Nebula overall, their scenes come off wrong to me at times. Kind of like the Bruce and Widow scenes in Ultron. The concept is there, but the arrow doesn't quite hit the bullseye.

Unless watching Guy Pearce chew scenery is your jam, Iron Man 3 is silly.

I'll admit it. I'll watch Guy Pearce in anything.

My personal gripe is the comedy was too forced. It feels like it's saying, "remember how funny the last one was? Well this one is waaaay funnier!" So much so the characters even laugh for way too long.

I also hate hate hate HATE the trope of how second movie outings often "break up the band" and split up the characters that we just got to know and love as a group the last time around (see Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc). I get that it is usually in service of the story - it's just my own sappy hangup I guess.

I'd say Iron Man 1, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy 1, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther and Spiderman Homecoming.

"Funny, she doesn't look Kreeish."

Finally finished DD S03 last night. Really enjoyed it, sorry we won't see them pick up where they left off, but I'm glad it went out at some kind of resolution.

To the Guardians 2 discussion, I also think the humour felt forced. And I think it also retroactively makes the first look worse because it shares a lot of the same weaknesses that were papered over by how fresh it was.

My top 3 MCU movies are Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Winter Soldier. Honourable mentions to Ant Man and The Avengers.

I agree with GotG2's humor feeling forced and that they felt obligated to out-funny the first one. Ragnarok was also trying to be funny, but it worked better because Thor is a naturally comical character. He's nearly indestructible, which to me would mean he doesn't take otherwise deadly situations too seriously, he's an optimist that takes these things in stride.

I just hope Marvel doesn't take the acclaim Ragnarok got and try to apply the lightheartedness to "lesser" characters where it wouldn't make as much sense.

Taika Waititi is an absolute master of natural humour that plays true to character. I'd trust him to pull it off anywhere. I wouldn't trust many writers or directors trying to do the same thing.

And he gave us "Piss off, ghost!" I will be forever grateful.

Ranked, in order (because I'm extra).

1. Black Panther
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming
3. Iron Man
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
6. Thor: Ragnarock
7. Doctor Strange
8. The Avengers
9. Captain America: Civil War
10. Avengers: Infinity War
11. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2
12. Thor
13. Captain America: The First Avenger
14. Avengers: Ago of Ultron
15. Ant-Man
16. Iron-Man 2
17. Ant-Man and the Wasp
18. Iron Man 3
19. The Incredible Hulk
20. Thor: The Dark World

I thought the first movie's humor operated pretty much the same way. But 2's humor had a lot of Tex Avery moments that I really liked. Like, if you're going to do that kind of goofy humor, you might as well lean into it.

This is of these things where I have a really weird view, because I downright did not like the first movie. I thought it's message of found family was forced, considering they'd only known each other for like 36 hours. There was a lot of unnatural infodump, and the villain was incredibly forgettable.

What I thought was interesting about GotG2 was that it re-examined that overly simple found family theme from the first movie and turned it on its head a bit. It looked at why you might need found family instead of your original family. And then it went into something I'm not sure I've seen any media actually do, which is looking back at toxic situations and separating the toxic people from decent people acting badly in a toxic situation. I thought that was fascinating. I also thought Michael Rooker should have been nominated for some kind of award for Yondu.

Plus it contains one of my favorite scenes in a Marvel movie:

Spoiler:

What I love about this is that in any other action movie, the hero sits around and Hamlets about it until someone else goads them into action. But GotG2 says, "There's no emotional turmoil here. This is exactly what you do if some stranger who says he's your dad tells you he killed your mom. "

The surprising thing is that it took them five movies to figure out that a.) Thor could be very funny, and b.) that Chris Hemsworth has spectacular comic timing and presence. Rewatching the first Thor movie and the first two Avengers, there are some funny scenes with Thor, but he's not treated as a comic character the way that he is in Ragnarok. Thor: The Dark World is just a mess of too-serious and overwrought drama that doesn't work for the character or for Hemsworth at all.
