Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

If they can hold it, they can play it. Auto steer and auto-accelerate means my daughter "plays" it by sometimes pressing no buttons.

And they can place pretty well too

Are there any tracks that are particularly good for that? I'm guessing the less obstacles the better?

It does a very good job of playing itself in full auto mode while still letting the child feel in control. It handles every track. It knows to avoid certain things and won't let the child drive off the track even if they drive straight at the edge. My 3yo manages to place well in matches this way. He is just happy to hit things with powerups. These auto features for Kart made it a game my whole family could play together. I want more games to do this as right now it is really hard for my 3yo to play anything else.

And on top of all that, I can't always tell when the Mario Kart assists are turned on. They feel damn seamless.

My 4.5 year old still finishes dead last every time. I'm not all the way convinced she understands what the joystick is for - she still spends half the race steering dead into the wall. Not sure she's hitting the accelerator either. She mostly enjoys it anyway.

I can *definitely* feel when the assists are on. At least with auto-steering - I've got my thumb on the accelerator 100% of the time anyway, so the auto accelerate doesn't have anything to do. Auto-steering feels like my controller is constantly losing connection momentarily.

I 100% agree with the comments on the assists in MK being fantastic for kids. My 5 year old loves the game, and the assists have been a huge part of him learning and having fun. Right off the bat he was able to be competitive in 50cc while still feeling like he was actually playing the game.

I also second this, I find it very disconcerting to play with the assists on as the auto steering just takes over at times, forcing me to take a line I didn't want or diverting me away from a short-cut I'm sure I could have made it through. For kids though it really is fantastic.

My son also really enjoys the battle modes which I tend to ignore. Again the assists are helpful with the added benefit that driving fast/clean is not really the point.

I'd be down for more MK8 tracks for sure. Fell off Odyssey around New Donk City, haven't gone back.

Oh yeah, if you go for off-track shortcuts and stuff then I bet auto-steer would get in the way pretty quick. I'm not at that level but I like to think I'm better than a 4-year-old, and it can take me a couple of laps to notice. Or it used to before I learned to notice the antenna on the back.

NINTENDO POSSIBLY HINTS AS FUTURE DLC FOR ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD, MARIO KART 8 DELUXE, SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY, AND OTHER EVERGREEN TITLES

Emphasis on possibly hints, but still an interesting idea imo. Would many people here be interested in (further) paid DLC for Nintendo's big Switch titles? Hypothetically, I'm pretty sure I'd buy DLC for BOTW and Odyssey - unless it looked awful or was way overpriced.

Spoiler:

Who am I kidding? Lemme get my wallet.

I've been thinking more about this, and whether or not I want more DLC from Nintendo's games really, really depends on what they offer.

On the one hand, they've made some of my gold standards for what DLC could or should look like. Mario Kart 8's DLC packs added a wealth of content to the game that was as good or better than what was already there. Likewise, Torna: The Golden Country adds a deep and memorable 20-30 hours to the already-great experience of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

On the other hand, I find the DLC for Breath of the Wild really disappointing. It's the kind of content I'd expect from a WB game: a challenge mode, some arena fights, costumes, and a minor story digression that lacks the verve of the main game. And the Fire Emblem DLC has been roundly disappointing since they started selling that with Awakening.

So more of the former? Heck, yes. I'll buy some today. More of the latter? Eh, I'll pass.

I gotta say, I'm a big fan of the BOTW DLC. I've put about 490 hours into BOTW so far and I could easily say that 100+ of those went into Trial of the Sword, Champions' Ballad, and Master Mode. So I'd happily take more of the same in that regard.

I've been thinking about the question more too. I was thinking about the Octo Expansion for Splatoon 2, and wondering if something similar to that would work well for Smash. Obviously we don't know how robust World of Light is yet, but potentially there could be scope to release a big single-player expansion in a year. I haven't played Octo, but it seems quite generous.

I've also been thinking about a bigger question around BOTW2 and Odyssey2, cause that effects the DLC question. I can see one of those games getting another entry, but not both. So whichever doesn't get a sequel, ideally I'd love for it to get a big chunk of DLC.

The Switch was a huge hit at Thanksgiving with my family. My 9 year old nephew already has one and I brought mine, not expecting much interest as he’s addicted to Fortnite like almost every kid.

Yesterday I finally asked if he wanted to play Towerfall instead. He reluctantly agreed. I was able to easily dock on their TV, of course. The individual joycons worked great as controller in that game. And it was a breeze to sync a new controller when we decided to get myother nephew into the game.

Today he asked to play Towerfall and we played some more. Some anecdotal proof of that game as a family game and the Switch’s original concept.

Nintendo has updated their game content guidelines for online content creators. It's a much more "modern" version that allows any critic or Let's Player, in theory, monetize their content.

We'll see what this looks like in execution, but right now this is a very positive move on their part.

Upgrading from a 128 GB SD card to a 256 GB SD card.

Is it better to put in the blank card and re-download everything or to copy from the smaller card to the larger card through my computer before swapping. I know for my 3DS I copied everything over manually but that might not be a big deal for the Switch. Anyone got experience?

This is Nintendo's official support page on the topic. tl;dr They suggest turning off the console and copying over all the data from one card to the other, then putting the new card in and turning the console back on. That's how I did it when I upgraded my card recently.

Thanks. I’ll peruse the link and do that. New card arrives today.

Yeah card copying is the way. I screwed up when I got a new system and did transfer, then deleted and re-downloaded everything. Oops.

Card upgrade went off without a hitch. Nice to have about 150gb free, not that it will last very long, I’m sure.

Okay, it looks like Gamestop *finally* shipped my Switch, so I may actually see it in person one day! However, the black friday deal when I ordered it includes a $50 Gamestop credit or gift card or whatever they call it there. I don't really care for Gamestop, so I'm wondering if the best use for this credit would be to use it to buy a $50 Nintendo e-shop credit, or is there some good reason to stick with Gamestop for it because of sales or lower prices? I'm primarily interested in keeping things digital since I'll be using it in more than one physical location and do not want to have to remember which games to bring with me. (Does the Switch even use game cards or cartridges, or is it all digital now?)

You can buy digital Switch games directly from Gamestop.

Although they don't follow the normal Nintendo sales. So a game might be 30% off on the Switch eShop but still full price at Gamestop.

But sometimes they won't let you use a gift card to buy another gift card. Not sure if eshop credit counts as gift card to them or not. Good luck.

If you can't get an eShop card with your Gamestop card, shoot me a PM. I'll trade you a $50 eShop card for it.

Thanks! I'll see what's available once the Switch gets here and then decide what I want to do!

I was in a GameStop yesterday and they had Metroid Prime 4 in a "Coming Soon" section with a release date of 28th April. I'm sure it means nothing, but I'm allowing myself to imagine that Nintendo are planning on announcing an April release at the Game Awards.

That would be one hell of a surprise. Here's hoping it's not just a Gamestop mistake.

It wouldn't be the first time they did something early, they actually gave me my Switch a day or two before 3rd March. Pretty exciting couple of days just looking at an empty home screen and the settings.

They tweeted me saying that the date is just a placeholder...which is exactly what they would say if they realised they'd broken embargo!

It's probably when the preorder for the 2022 release of MP4 goes up.

Started playing The World Ends With You on Switch last night. You can play in either Joycon mode (which only uses one of the two joycons, and turns the one with the home button off) or touchscreen mode, and I think it's safe to say that the game was really made for touchscreen mode. Joycon is hard to control and constantly needs re-centering of the controller.
Otherwise, and I'm probably the only person who will miss this, they got rid of the magic hockey puck thing since the game is no longer dual screen. Now your partner is just another pin to activate, albeit a permanent one. Not entirely sure what's going to be the difference between tapping on an enemy to activate your partner and tapping on an enemy to activate another pin, but I guess we'll see.

Since April 28th is a Sunday, I really doubt the date is real. Just Gamestop being Gamestop and trying to take pre-orders for something that doesn't even exist.
