X4: Foundations Catch-all

M&K imho

I'd normally agree with this, but with Rebirth, they seemed to REALLLLLY want us to use a gamepad, so we'll see what X4 has in store in this regard.

This is NOT a joystick game though.

I used my ancient Cyborg EVO flightstick pretty successfully for X3. I didn't play Rebirth. I have significant trouble using a controller for flight games, but practice might fix that. The ObsidianAnt video looked to me like he was using a mouse pretty successfully, and the X games have always supported that by switching between flight and UI modes. But I always found it useful to fly with one hand and click targets with the other.

By "not a joystick game" do you mean a stick isn't needed or that it would actually be difficult to use?

Games like I-War, TIE Fighter, Freespace, these are joystick games because a stick is the method by which they're meant to be played.

The X games have never been about the spaceflight primarily, therefore I wouldn't consider them joystick-centric games.

Thanks. That makes sense- at the beginning of an X3 game I might do a lot of manual flying but once I was in a M6 or bigger I'd almost always be running on autopilot. Also, I always use MARS for my turrets which made the AI rather better than me at making nearby red things go away .

Exactly, you're meant to be a captain of industry, only your office happens to be a spaceship.

You’re all terrible. I just pre-ordered.

Yeah me too - Bastards!

Just waiting for the 30th.

Downloading on Steam now! Also out on GOG. 9.5 GB download.

I can’t wait to hear about your impressions. I can’t believe X3 Terran Conflict was so long ago.

I can't believe it's been five years since Rebirth. Holy hell.

Sometimes I want to go back and kill Borons. The whole lot of em.

What Balthezor said - 5 years, blimey.

I've been poking into the Egosoft Discord a few times today, people definitely seem to be hitting some bugs, but it's hard to see how widespread it is. I did pre-order but my current plan is to wait, probably at least a month, but we'll see what you guinea pigs say about it!

Initial thoughts (coming from someone who was a day 1 adopter from X2 on)

Initial tutorials, are fairly bare bones but do teach you the new basics solidly. Some of the tutorials (like boarding) are locked until the situation comes up..then you are prompted again.

The universe is VERY alive!

You are definitely dropped in and basically told..."go forth". No hand holding here. Kind of an elite vibe from that perspective, but nowhere near as lonely.

Started exploring Black Sun starting system..picked up a mission to repair a few leaky signals from a station...that led me to a multi-stage voice and video comm acted civilian science mission that I am still working through and is pretty cool.

While on my science mission, I had teladi (I think) attack, while fighting the second off, I managed to disable it, and the tutorial system helpfully said..."hey, you know that tutorial about boarding you couldn't do before? NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO DO IT...HINT HINT"

Space walked my way to the ship, and took it over....flipping awesome. Now have a hurt fighter better than my own, but no captain to fly it. Flew to closest station and recruited a friendly. Had her be captain of my ship. We then flew back over to the damaged ship, I EVA'd back over to it, and now I have a fighter escort!

Told my new captain to form a wing with me and we went back to the main Argon ship/equipment base (which took a while, but the "find me a path to this base" system works REALLY well), and I repaired and added to my new fighter.

Nifty bit, I replaced a destroyed shield generator and primary weapon...while this was being done (given a countdown timer of a minute to complete) you could walk outside and SEE the new bits forming on your vessel. Nobody constructing, just a kind of materializing effect and boom, now I have a big shooty gun where none was before, and a shield module on the belly.

That's as far as I've gotten so far. Still on my science mission. Got totally side-tracked which is great. The environment is awesome, especially in stations. They feel very alive, and seeing absolutely MASSIVE ships landing near me as I am walking around, and knowing "yeah I'm gonna fly one of those" is fantastic.

It seems like a pure extension of X3, a true sequel. Time will tell if the AI tanks when you get huge bases going and how the economy works, and etc etc, but first impressions are very very VERY good.

Full disclosure, did run into weird interface bugs in the menus where sometime I cant right click on things. Usually hit escape and go right back to where I was and it then works, so not too bad. Zero crashes. Frame rate is solid (GTX 1070, i7, 16 GB RAM), and the few combats I have gotten into (not on purpose) have been decent.

Playing KB+M for now. May hook up my Saitek 52 pro (there is a built in profile for it) later. Also, although they said Track-IR support was going to be in, I didnt see a way to turn it on. Im sure this will be coming though, and the ability to look around the cockpit will be super.

Walking around your ship and station is great! And doesnt seem pointless like rebirth. But beware...the big stations are BIG! My first mission was to find a vendor, and he was clear on the other side of the station. I had to take an elevator down to the large ship docking area, take a people mover across and take an elevator back up to the other side. I love that they were considerate and actually put people movers in!!

That's all for now. Love to hear some of my fellow space nerds impressions (Veloxi!!)

I am considering reinstalling Voice Attack for this game.

I hope to try some of it tonight, tomorrow is a definite regardless.

Confirmed TrackIR is not in YET.

Damn it guys. I might buy this tonight.

Treat your other ships in the map like a RTS. Select them, the right click on what you want them to act on and pick action

I can't figure out how to make one of my ships to buy something remotely tho.

I really would wait. Give it time to see how this game pans out.

X3 had specific software you had to buy for the ship in order to do that. Is it the same here?

Not for basic commands.

So the first tutorial was setting up one's joystick/HOTAS.

FINE, I'LL PLUG IN EVERYTHING.

I follow the tutorial, THINKING I set everything up properly.

Undock and hit a wall. Throttle is set to zero, yet I'm moving forward.

Keyboard and mouse it is!

Gosh this looks good, but I think I'm going to wait for a few patches going by the early reviews. Maybe I'll catch it with a nice little 30%+ off down the line

Bonus being, there will probably be a whole bunch of tutorials to help me out. I always loved the idea of X, but X3 just blew me out with its complexity.

Definitely dont be afraid to wait a bit on this. It is DENSE, and there are reports around some trade bugs that could be pretty severe if true. About to go check that out.

EDIT : Ok CONFIRMED this one rather bad bug. Do NOT buy or build a Magpie mining ship at this time. It causes the trade menu to go black for any ship (you click trade..black window comes up). Fortunately that only rolls me back about 30 minutes of play time, so no biggie.

Loving the new map now that I have wrapped my head around it. Much easier to find what you are looking for. The search filter is a god-send.

About to sell all my fighter-craft and get me a nice big space truck and enough cash to start making some mint. Mission rewards are very generous.

I know Steam reviews are to be avoided normally, but this is hilarious

His name is Steve, he doesn't have much to say, but I am thinking of asking him to marry me

"...and that, love, is why I'm late home from work.."

I started playing this morning, and had an odd experience.

Poking around the starting dock, I saw another ship dock next to mine. Cool, I thought; I walked up its stairs and talked to the pilot, who wanted nothing to do with me. Before I could leave, he closed his doors and took off. Not wanting to be stuck, I walked over to the door control panel, and found an option to eject into my space suit, which I took.

By the time I was out of his ship, he was 3km from the docking port. No big deal, I figured -- I set a course for the station and started moving in the direction of one of the open ports. About halfway there, the words "Game Over" appeared on the screen, and then I was dumped to the main menu.

Weird and disappointing.
