With Rockstar’s ponderous behemoth safely in the rearview mirror, now we start getting the really big game releases.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy / Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy comes out as a reward for late adopters like me who wanted both of them, but didn’t want to spend full price on either. Yay, patience!

Artifact marks Valve’s return to the world of game development with a … collectible card game. If we know anything about Valve, then we know the sequel will be amazing.

I never played any of the Asterix games when they first came out, but Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission - Las Vegum has piqued my interest. It looks fantastic, and I love action/brawler/platformer/whatever this looks like it is.

Darksiders III comes out with a non-canonical horse-person of the apocalypse: Strife, which is basically a milder word for War, which disappoints me because I was looking forward to seeing how a game that featured Pestilence or Famine would play. But if going with weak synonyms means the game plays more like Darksiders I and less like Darksiders II, I’ll be happy. Bring on Zelda with guns!

Spintires Mudrunners: American Wilds Edition comes to the Nintendo Switch, but it doesn’t make my pick for game of the week simply because I already have the optimal Spintires setup on my PC, so I probably won’t be picking this one up. However, if you haven’t played Spintires, and you have a Switch, then this is a fine entry point for you.

My pick for the week is a surprise even to me. I had no idea that X4: Foundations was even in development, but now that it’s coming out I feel compelled to give it the seat of honor on my list. It looks fantastic and terrifyingly vast, much like space itself.

Fly all the ships! X4: Foundations is my pick for the week!

By Toutatis and Belenos, I didn’t know there was an Asterix game, let alone a remastered one! Ita diis placuit! Ahem, anyway, Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission - Las Vegum originally came out in 2006, I think in Europe only. The gameplay sounds Lego-ish: You wander about doing light puzzling and combat and can switch freely between Asterix and Obelix, who have different abilities to be used to solve said puzzles. This re-release is more than a graphical remaster – the devs have also sprinkled in some more modern gameplay features. Now it has fast travel, collectibles, a challenge mode and a rudimentary upgrade system of purchasable combat skills. I’m just not sure if it stands on its own feet as a game, or if you’d be better off just re-reading the comics.

Instead, my vote is going to another combat’n’puzzling game: Darksiders III. Without getting into a theological argument with someone with “doutbtingthomas” in their handle, let’s just say that Strife as a horseperson of the apocalypse is canonical … to the Darksiders series, having been mentioned in I and II. Anyhoo, you don’t play as Strife, you play as Fury. It’s been 6 years between riders and since then, the original devs went bust (RIP Vigil), and Gunfire Games has stepped in.

Darksiders III promises all the elements I liked about the first 2 games: hackin’n’slashin, environmental puzzles, platforming, exploration … think God of War or Devil May Cry more than Dark Souls. The previous 2 games were a solid blend of all these components, and not afraid to steal from the best in order to spice up their gameplay. This time, also like the latest God of War, there’s crafting to be had, and I wonder what other surprises may be in store. Hack’n’slash doesn’t always have to be brutally, remorselessly punishing. Darksiders III for GOTW.

Comments

I went down here to correct Greg on Fury being the main horseperson of Darksiders 3, but then I finished reading and saw Felix already handled it.

Reviews seem... middling, but they were a bit when the original game released. One thing I'll note is that Gunfire is half of the original Vigil, so there's some of the original team's DNA in it still. I have my copy pre-ordered and have been on media blackout. I know not to expect a game like the prior two, so I'm open to seeing what changes they make in this one.

Never finished Darksiders 2. But I think I want X4 as well.

Maybe Christmas sale will at least be 20% off in a few weeks.

My mistake on the Strife/Fury thing.

At least my jokes are all written for Darksiders 4!

I'm 90% certain I have a R-Type/R-Type II compilation somewhere already.

Is it just me (cause I haven't played the other Darksiders games), but does the main character in this one look weird to anyone else?

Ah yes, R-Types for PS1.
Still, the new one has an infinite lives option..so..almost worth it.
edit: Nope, never mind, invincibility cheat codes for the win!

Really though I think I'd rather finish R-Type Final and R-Type Delta.

If Horizon Chase Turbo had any gameplay like Chase HQ I'd be on it in a second.

Having watched Hilda on Netflix like, three? times already.
NAIRI: Tower of Shirin compels me!

edit: omg I can't wait for Battle Princess Madelyn.

Weird in what way? She's basically her original design, but with actual armor instead of... not.

I agree with Roland. There’s something off about the way she moves, like her joints were designed by the people who make Todd McFarlane action figures.

It’s kind of unnerving.
