Battlefield V - Easy Allies Review

Turns out turning on DX 12 disables your ability to play online. Be careful.

I got the error message in the game "this ea account is restricted from accessing online features"

I contacted support and they told me to turn it off and it worked. Bonkers.

I encountered this last night. Craziest thing I've ever seen.

The whole feel of this game is so odd. Not the gameplay but the... theme park interpretation of WW2? It feels almost like it was supposed to be a "Strangereal" (to borrow an Ace Combat franchise term) version of the war, where the weapons are real and all of the factions are vague mashups of actual countries, but then they chickened out on committing to a fictional setting.

Maybe they could have avoided some of the "muh historical accuracy" sh*tstorm if they had done that? Eh, probably not.

Because historical accuracy is always what this franchise has been about

They've always said this was never to be a sim. There's other games for that.

It's right there in my post already, but to reiterate: what I'm talking about has nothing to do with the realism of the gameplay mechanics. I'm talking purely about the tone and presentation.

The tone in mainline historical BF has always been pretty much the same, wrapped with assets very loosely tied to the real combat periods in which the games are based, but gameplay not reflecting that very much.

Maybe as the graphics and sensory experiences get better, people notice the differences more, or maybe people are just more sensitive now. Don't know. I just haven't really seen any "sh*tstorms" myself. Maybe I'm not keeping up enough, which is totally possible.

The sh*tstorm I'm referring to was mainly the assholes who threw a tantrum at there being female and non-white characters in the game. And those people were probably going to raise a stink no matter what, but it would have been easier to cut the legs out from under their disingenuous "But it's not historically accurate!" argument if BFV had just not even pretended to be about historical events in any way. As it is, the WW2 historical veneer is very thin... thin enough that I feel like it would have been better off to be a "Strangereal" game about an entirely fictional conflict between fictional countries.

You can cut their legs out with any of these points instead:

I tried the second War Story - Nordlys - on Friday. It was horrible, and I'm finally done with the single player campaign. Exactly the same issues as the first mission: Too long. Too linear. Too many initially-unspottable enemies, with marksman-like accuracy, who rush the player from unexpected directions. One new, and lamentable, addition: flamethrower-toting troops, who require 3 headshots to put down.

It took me about an hour and a half to finish.

Multiplayer was much more enjoyable. I got into a good squad on Sunday. We were sticking together, reviving, and supplying each other. It made a huge difference to my survivability and my effectiveness. I had a positive K/D R on a couple of days in Grand Operations. I might even get to 0.5 average in the next session!

No details yet, but the update is being delayed. No clue on ETA yet.

Yeah they mentioned it wouldn't be too long but no date yet. They should have a better idea tomorrow.

After finishing up my 10 hour trial:

I would describe the look of the game as "gorgeous."

I would describe the presentation/tone of the game as "odd" (already tried to explain what I mean by this).

I would describe the gameplay as "frustrating."

And I would describe the game overall as "unfinished."

The only time I really found the game rewarding in that I felt like I knew what to do and could contribute to the team was as a Medic. But the wonky inconsistency of the revive mechanic and the weakness of SMG's (which would frequently cause me to lose fights at what should be my optimal range when I shot first only to have somebody with an AR or LMG just turn around and instantly waste me) often left a bad taste in my mouth even then. Apparently they're working on improving revives and SMG's are supposed to get a buff in the patch (but then it looks like a lot of other weapons also got a close-range buff too so...?)

Overall it's a game I would play again but I'm not prepared to pay $60 for in its current state. Will wait for a sale and hopefully balance and feature improvements in a month or two.

Love the practice range feature, long over due. Two issues though: can't seem to spec weapons in practice mode and I can't seem to deploy a bipod for LMGs. Anyone else run into these problems?

Didn't it just update a few hours ago?

Won't be on till later to try out new stuff.

It's not just you. I was kind of hoping the practice range would be more like the one in BF4. Oh well.

Yeah wish it had that feature as well but I think it was noted by the devs and they are looking into it or working on it for a future release.

Thanks Erik. Now that I've spent more time on it, the shooting ranges are kinda useless when you can't spec the guns.

I also didn't see the option to use the PIAT unless I missed it. I'd like to play around with the arc.

This is a great change:

"Players occupying top gunner positions in land vehicles are now able to duck down and become somewhat protected from incoming shots. While ducking, top gunners are still able “blind-fire” the machine gun."

It seems like manning a turret was just an invite to die quickly.

Yeah, still wish you could readily tell which slot you were going into in a tank; number of times I've dropped in assuming I was going to get the internal gunner only to find myself as sniper bait :p

It's such a significant change making transport vehicles more viable as well.

This is 50% off on xbox if you buy via BF app. Apparently that is my price point. See you online!

Me too- I bought it last night on the xbox after starting BF1 and getting the offer pop up. £30 in UK (not really half price but MS gave me £4 credit for some reason too).

Any of us still playing this on the PC? Haven't seen many GWJ'ers playing recently.

Still binging BO4, and play only a few hours a couple times a week.
