There can be no doubt as to my game of the week, but let’s get the other five out of the way first, shall we?

Ms. Splosion Man is one of my favorite platformers. I bought it on The GWFL store, then again when it released on Steam. Bright, frenetic, unabashedly silly and fun, and now available on the Nintendo Switch. I may just triple dip on this one.

Woodpunk has an interesting premise, and by interesting I mean “historically illiterate.” It’s a roguelike set in a fantastical alternate medieval past where the primary source of fuel was... wood. So, basically, it’s set in the medieval past. But, it’s a roguelike top-down shooter, and if you’re learning history from video games, then you’re both playing video games wrong and you’re learning history wrong, so I’ll just be content with the fact that it looks fun and have done with it.

Toy Road Constructor gives you a bedroom full of detritus and asks you to build elaborate highways for cars the size of matchboxes (dig that clever use of language to avoid copyrights!). It is a game for those of us who remember the simple pleasures, and I’m all for it.

Warpzone Drifter has an art style that puts me in mind of a lot of very old arcade games. You have to drift your tiny car through various checkpoints as fast as possible. If it controls like GTA2, then I can give up my dream of getting Rockstar to rerelease GTA2 on Steam, because the driving and drifting mechanics of GTA2 are the main reason I want that game back.

Kumpels is a 2D mining company game. The ugliness of the art style is part of what caught my eye. Watching the gameplay trailer didn’t disabuse me of my opinions of its ugliness, but the game looks like it has a lot of interesting systems going for it. There’s exploration, there’s business management, and there’s a research tree, which is one of my favorite things in any game.

Now we come to my game of the week, and I can think of no better week for it. It’s not only the week of Thanksgiving, a uniquely American homage to the very thing that farmers do for us all, but it’s also the week of my birthday. So it is with no small amount of enthusiasm that I plug Farming Simulator 19 as my game of the week. They added the John Deere license to their already impressive list of equipment manufacturers, and horses to the list of animals you can raise, which naturally means they added horseback riding. They also added multiplayer, but nobody’s perfect.

Farming Simulator 19 comes out on a week when I have a long weekend and birthday prerogative to hole up and play anything I want all day. Naturally, it gets my Game of the Week.

This week, you get a tasty helping of DLC for some good games. Marvel's Spider-Man: Turf Wars brings Hammerhead to town and with him, new missions, bases, crimes and challenges. There’s also 3 new suits, and I hope they come with new powers and are not just cosmetic – who am I kidding? I’m going to keep using Spider-Bro anyway.

Valkyria Chronicles 4: The Two Valkyria offers a new story to play after you’ve finished the main story and unlock – gasp – Selvaria and another Valkyria to play as during the main game. It also offers *looks down sheepishly and starts mumbling* swimsuits for the 4 new playable female characters.

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is an XCOM-alike, but you’re fighting Nazis and their eldritch allies. This game was Kickstarted 5 years ago as a tabletop RPG, then made into a skirmish miniature game, then comics, then audio dramas. So, people clearly like the IP, and presumably the ruleset is solid. I don’t believe there is a strategic layer sitting above the tactical missions, so it may not be as absorbing as XCOM, but could be decent enough.

I wouldn’t be Australian if I didn’t notice Storm Boy on the list. It’s a game based on a modern classic Aussie novel (well, it made its way to the school curriculum, anyway) and movie. If you liked Red Dead Redemption 2 for its theme of the loss of a way of life that was in touch with nature in the face of civilisation, cities and man-made things, but you don’t want any shooting or conversation with other people, then Storm Boy may be the game for you. It’s a story about a reclusive, beachcombing boy’s bond with his adoptive pelican, experienced largely through relaxing beach minigames.

While Spider-Man: Turf Wars is a no-brainer for our house, you already know whether you’re going to get it. I’ll take a punt and give my GOTW vote to the unknown quantity: Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics.

It’s a story about a reclusive, beachcombing boy’s bond with his adoptive pelican, experienced largely through relaxing beach minigames.

Does it come with swimsuit DLC for the pelican?

You’re thinking of the Hatoful Boyfriend: Estival Festival DLC

Spoiler:

Note: Hatoful Boyfriend: Estival Festival is not a thing, but it would probably sell very well if it were.
