Recommend me a (non-gaming) podcast

I just caught up on Heavyweight. Binged season 2 rather quickly, then moved to the current season.

Are there any Gimlet podcasts that aren’t great? So far my only complaint is that they fired Starlee and canceled her podcast, Mystery.

Not really. I haven't checked out any of their scripted shows though. It comes down to preference. I really like The Pitch but everyone might not want to listen to the audio version of Shark Tank. Startup is also really good, but it's all about entrepreneurs and startup culture which isn't everyone's cup of tea. I dip in and out of Science Vs because I sometimes prefer a deeper dive than they do.

Quality-wise though the network is top notch. Alex Bloomberg started the network after leaving NPR and the Planet Money podcast. Season one of Startup is all about his starting the network and is great.

Planet Money is another one of my faves. It's about economics, but in a fun interesting way. For instance, they did a short series tracking a t-shirt from birth to sale across the globe. They also once created a bot to buy and sell stocks based on Trump's tweets. Really good show.

I loved Planet Money but haven’t kept up. I enjoy Alex Bloomberg’s voice and speaking cadence, so was happy to learn that Gimlet was his gig.

I love Wendy Zuckerman of Science Vs. and the show but my active interest curve bends more toward other stuff anymore.

For instance I’m listening to Design Life. It’s a jewel of a show where two primarily web designers talk about their work and also stuff like when to change jobs and how to work remotely.

The latest episode of The Hilarious World of Depression was really good. Guest stars Scot Thompson of the Kids in the Hall who has been through a LOT more sh*t than I would have ever guessed. Did you know Scot Thompson was the target of an Iraqi Intelligence terror campaign in 2001 (pre 9/11)? I for one, did not.

I fell off that podcast but I liked most of what I listened to. Some of the guests were a little too into their story such that it felt a little disingenuous. Overall, though, good stuff.

I fell off too. Thanks for recommending it though Kazooka. I've starred it and will definitely check it out.

Partly because of too much awesome podcast glut, but I've fallen off all of my interview podcasts like Nerdist, WTF, Tim Ferris, etc because the guests are always hit and miss. I'll scan the episodes from time to time and listen to the ones that sound interesting.

This is what I've been doing- switching to Overcast made it easier than Downcast. I go through once a day or so and pick out the ones to download vs the ones to just leave streaming. I just wish there was a way to filter only the downloaded podcasts so I can see what I can safely listen to in the car.

I just looked and couldn’t find it but I must have some setting set somewhere because Overcast never streams unless I explicitly hit the play button to stream. If I find that I’ll drop a note here.

372 Pages We’ll Never Get Back.

Last year MST3K’s Michael J. Nelson and Rifftrax’s Conor Lastowka started a podcast to talk about how badly Ready Player One fails on so many levels. Then they reunited to cover Armada by the same author, and now it’s starting to morph into an MST3K for awful literature. They’re starting William Shatner’s Tekwar in the next episode.

The latest episode of Reply All is an amazing story about chasing down the hacker of a stolen Snapchat account. It is a crazy ride and should win an award.

Oh this sounds good.

Some hidden gems:

Boars, Gore and Swords. Used to be a Game of Thrones pod where the hosts, two awful tier comedians from San Francisco walk through each episode...then read the books during show hiatus. Since the show is so infrequent (and RR's books never come out) they've moved on to doing a What You Should Be Watching format for show pilots. I've been listening for years so the in-jokes about GoT tropes are delightful. It's silly, juvenile, and oddly cathartic in today's political landscape where these two nerds slam the awfulness in the world.

Stacking Benjamins. Finance-related that is SUPER square but has been very helpful to me in keeping finance top-of-mind. Very easy to listen to.

The Ezra Klein Show. Good deep dives into current topics/themes in our world. The guests are frequently book authors or thinkers that really add to my understanding of an issue (identity politics, automation, financial crisis, art, etc.).

(catching up with the thread...)

re: The Black Tapes

Dang, that's disappointing it seems to end on a bum note! I've not gotten that far yet (I think i haven't gone back to it since season 2 yet) but you make it sound like it's probably better not to.

White Vault sounds interesting though (claustrophobic arctic/antarctic horror stories are right up my ice crevasse) - so that's going on the list! Same with the Magnus Archives.

In a similar vein, I really like Vox's The Weeds podcast, where Klein and Yglesias nerd out about statistics and political science white papers. It also regularly demonstrates that the best person in that outfit is actually Dara Lind, who regularly demonstrates that she knows what she's talking about to a much greater degree than Klein or Yglesias.

Awe yeah! Reply All does it again.

I was looking for a true crime podcast. After trying a few I landed on True Crime Garage. It’s pretty good.

I’m dying to hear the next Science vs episode. They’re supposed to be taking on CBD oil.

Started on the Magnus Archives , two episodes in and already hooked!

I find I like her contributions more and more. The other two seem to like the sound of their voices.

Dang! On episode 11 of Magnus Archives - this is great stuff! I'm almost glad i'm finding it quite late because it means I still have a crapload of episodes to work my way through!

Not sure if these have been recommended yet but Slow Burn is a fantastic podcast if you're interested in how things were during Nixon's more interesting years.

Also, if you like radio plays, Wolverine: The Long Night is free now and is really well produced. Also, Limetown has a new season out.

Seconded. It's fantastic. I re-listen to the entire thing every few years or so.

Also, his book, The Storm Before the Storm, is excellent - it covers the last century and a half or so of the Republic

I'd like to submit Broken Record, Malcom Gladwell's latest. It subtitles itself "Liner notes for the digital age".

The first episode is an extended interview with Rick Rubin. It feels like an interesting, if unintended, companion piece to Slate's Hit Parade, but with the original artists & producers filling providing Chris Molanphy's commentary.

After Mike Duncan, try "Emperors of Rome" and "When in Rome"- both are really good if not quite as comprehensive. "When in Rome" is more about specific sites in Rome and related places- this season is about Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Also the Hardcore History series on the end of the Republic- it was interesting to compare his analysis with Duncan's since they're covering about the same period.
