Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Smash All

I’m curious how they treat the Switch. They put out updated handhelds pretty often. They almost never make meaningful iterations on home consoles. Usually just smaller versions and such.

Very true. I think that with the huge success of the Switch and the big miss that was the WiiU (which was awesome, better than the Wii to me), it would make sense for them to extend the platform as long as possible by using the their handheld pattern of upgrades, but who knows?

I think a revision is coming. The Switch is a handheld they've managed to convince people is a console so I fully expect there to be revisions, if only to battery life and whatnot.

I'm hoping we get a slight uptick in cpu speed, but I'm not expextinf this first revision to have it. Then the X2 will come whenever a proper Switch 2 is released. I imagine the only thing holding Nintendo back from using a Tegra X2 is the cost. Eventually that'll come down and we'll get the better battery life we all want because the X2 is more powerful and efficient.

Is the only benefit of the fighters pass that you save five dollars over buying the DLC individually?

Looks like it.

I'm planning on getting them a la carte. If I decide I don't like even one of the 5 new fighters then that's more savings than you get from the bundle.

That's a really good way of looking at it. If you factor in the double gold coins on pre-orders, then the Fighter's Pass is slightly cheaper than buying four individual Packs though. It's a small thing that doesn't apply if you're not in the habit of using your gold coins, but I'll be factoring it in when I'm deciding whether or not I want to get it.

I like the way they're upfront about how ideally we'd know who's in the Packs, and how people shouldn't buy the Pass unless they're confident they'll get value out of it.

I'm other news, the name World of Light is a reference to Kirby, who Sakurai created. Putting it very simply, the Japanese name for World of Light is a pun/Dad Joke on the Japanese name for the Kirby games. (For an 'actually accurate' explanation, see here.) I think that's pretty cool.

That and a Rex outfit for the Mii Fighter.

Our fearless leader Sakurai put out a couple of interesting tweets:

Sakurai wrote:

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s DLC line-up is now complete. This time the selection was made entirely by Nintendo. I decide if we can create a fighter based on their selection, then come up with the plan.

Then Sakurai wrote:

It’s great to dream about your favorite character joining the battle and I appreciate your passion, but please try to stay on topic when replying to tweets and refrain from flooding us, and other users, with requests when we're not specifically asking for feedback. Thank you!

Considering how recently the Direct was, -
which told us the Packs hadn't been finalised and might take a year to come out - I wouldn't be surprised if these were lies designed to dissuade people from sensing him picks of Waluigu dressed up as Shrek...

The Direct itself was probably filmed weeks before the decision was made. Just turns out the decision was made less than a week later.

Nevertheless, it won't dissuade anyone from anything. People will still bombard him with trash requests and insults and honestly it's a wonder anyone in such a visible position remains on social media at all.

Yeah, I don't envy him at all... Death threats over Waluigi, of all things...

The news that the fighters have all been picked is interesting, in and of itself, but lines like "This time the selection was made entirely by Nintendo" and "please try to stay on topic when replying to tweets and refrain from flooding us, and other users" are very telling.

For the Wii U release, they had a well-publicized ballot where players could freely suggest whatever character they wanted for the final DLC character slot. Ultimately, Bayonetta was chosen as the top-voted character that Nintendo was able to include. Fans inevitably immediately accused them of rigging the ballot and that the whole thing was a sham, because Nintendo had recently published Bayonetta 2.

I think some fans got it in their heads that Nintendo was going to look at the ballot results and throw buckets of cash at whoever they needed to in order to get the top vote-getter into the game, including characters that were likely impossible to license, like Master Chief or Kratos. That Nintendo ultimately went with the top-voted character who they could most easily get the rights to was a "betrayal" and yadda yadda.

As we're seeing with Diablo right now, the worst thing a company can do is fail to meet the imagined expectations of an entitled fanbase. I don't blame Nintendo at all for deciding they'd rather just do this sh*t internally and not mess with fan input.

Obviously they need to get Solaire in there; he's already got an Amiibo!

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit double posting.

Damn near spat out my toothpaste!

Got my Piranha Plant code already after pre-order.

So...I just pre-loaded the game...and the Fighters' Pass. I was mainly motivated by a combination of double coins, early adopter bonus fighter, better value on the fighter packs, and knowledge of how many hours I put into this on 3DS.

It's now the most expensive game I own. However, before today BOTW held that title, which - as it happens - is also the best value game I own on Switch by a long shot. So hopefully Smash will follow in those footsteps.

Damn near spat out my toothpaste!

I'll do better next time.

What’s everyone’s plan once they get the game? Cheese to unlock all the characters? Go through World of light? Classic mode?

I think I am going to start with World of Light because that seems the most interesting to me. Although with each character having their own classic mode, I’m very interested in that as well. I only have a couple of weeks before the holidays and I want to have everyone unlocked by then, so I might have to cheese the unlocks for some.

I will probably play through classic mode with several characters to get back into the swing of things, and then some matches against the computer and try to do some unlocks. I'm getting with an old college buddy on Saturday to play some smash late into the night like the old days, so I just want to get reacclimated after not really playing much Sm4sh. The wife will be out of town for a week later in the month, so I'll probably dig deep into World of Light and cheesing unlocks at that point.

And finding some GWJers to play some matches with items turned on.

New baby so not much online for me. I should be awake at midnight Thurs night though. ,)

Don't we have a big gaming tag spreadsheet? Need to add a Smash tab to it and start friending each other in advance.

I was wondering the same. Should we have options for those who prefer to play competitive and those who prefer to have more of the crazy turned on?

I hadn't realized it was this week! There's so much other gaming goodness right now, or around the corner. RDR2, plus Winter Holiday events are about to hit a ton of games like Rocket League and Overwatch.

GWJ spreadsheet

Maybe add to OP?

I put a Smash column in the Switch tab.

EDIT: We might also need a channel in GWJ Discord. Not sure what the status of Nintendo app is but it didn't work that well with Splatoon 2, so might as well prepare to use Discord for voice.

There’s a way to request voice channels, and a Fighting Game channel as well. If there are good consistent numbers, then we can make a full category for it.

I saw the #Nintendo channel there, and made a comment. Couldn't find a request thingy.

#requests is further down, under the On Demand Voice category, for creating voice channels. For note: those only last 48 hours after the last activity. Easy to set up if it gets lost.

#fighters is the fighting game channel, though a lot of us who’ve been on the server longer tend to drop other stuff in there as well.

OK, added myself to the spreadsheet.

Added my info to the switch tab.

I think I'll likely start with the World of Light, but I'll also be itching for unlocks. Not to play them, but just to have them. I'll probably stick mostly with my 2-3 favorites so long as they still feel good to play. Hopefully World of Light gets me to play others so I can expand my horizons.

Yeah I've always played Link (and Toon), Marth, Ike, Peach, Zelda, then ZSS, Pit, Robin, Lucina in later games. I love Yoshi the character and that's been my main in Mario Kart, Golf, Tennis, etc. forever. But the lack of double jump has kept me from playing Yoshi in every Smash game.

I keep wanting Samus to be good but she never is. I'm sure I'll still give her a shot this weekend. And of course Ridley.

While I don’t think that character unlocks are full spoiler territory, I will spoiler tag them anyways in case someone doesn’t want to know how to unlock, or how some mechanics will work.

World of light:

Spoiler:

Starts you out as Kirby and along the way you unlock new characters to play as. Once you unlock them in World of light they are unlocked.

Classic mode:

Spoiler:

From my understanding each character has a unqiue “story” and will unlock 1 other character.

Playing multiplayer:

Spoiler:

Every 10 min in a multiplayer game unlocks a new character.

How to cheese the unlock system:

Spoiler:

(multiplayer)If you completely exit the game the timer resets. So you can do a 1-stock match unlock reset and repeat. Doing this should unlock all the characters in less than 90 min.

I think I'll dive into World of Light quickly enough. It looks really interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like once you get into it.

I think I added myself to the form, but feel free to let me know if I did it wrong. I am in no way a serious Smash player; I'll be all about the chaos.
