GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

Is there a way to rename my gwj profile name? It's currently a steam name I haven't used for several years.

Send a message to Certis.

The "favourites" star at top right is always red for me now, regardless of whether or not there have been any new posts to my tagged threads. Started a couple of days ago.

Is it possible to make entire boards on the forum invisible to your profile? As in you won’t be able to see them when you log in. I know that’s a weird request!

If you mean invisible on the forum index page, I've been doing this for years. First, you'll need to install a styles manager to your browser. I use Stylus (Chrome, Firefox). Once installed, click the Stylus icon and click the Manage button. On the Manage screen, click "Write new style". On the following screen, click the + next to "Applies to Everything". Now, click the dropdown menu and select "URLs on the domain" and enter gamerswithjobs.com in the small text field to the right of the dropdown.

In the large text field above, where the actual code goes, copy & paste the following.

#forum-list-#####, #forum-list-#####, #forum-list-##### { display: none; }

You'll need to replace ##### with the 5-digit number assigned to the specific forum section. Here is the list of forums and their numbers.

Front Page Articles 10136
Games and Platforms 10111
Everything Else 10106
MMORPG Junction 10116
Sports Discussion and Leagues 10141
Tech and Help 10146
Discussions and Debates 10121

NOTE: If you're only hiding one forum section, be sure to remove the comma after #forum-list-##### or else the code won't work.

Once you've plugged in the numbers, click the Save button at the upper left, and you're done. You will never see that forum section(s) again on the forum index page.

It looks like the Netflix thread over in EBG has duplicated itself? I see two copies of it, anyway.

Did leadership ever come to a consensus on whether Coffee Grinders can embed links? I've been cleaning up a few spam links lately...

Anyone else finding they have to click the back button several times to return to a previous page? This is happening quite a lot for me recently, specifically with Chrome on desktop.

I haven't had that problem, using Firefox here.

No issues here on Chrome on a desktop or on my phone.

Sounds like a personal problem, Great Helmsman.

Maybe everyone else BUT me is the problem! /runsoffcrying

You might have a javascript injector installed by an addon doing redirects in your browser. Try disabling all addons and see what happens.

Is there anybody doing any sort of active moderation around here? I've seen quite a few new accounts posting advertising spam to threads lately that have been going unaddressed even after being reported.

See the little Flag icon in the top right of every post? That is the report button. Certis has been away until recently though so there may be a backlog.

Yeah, that’s why I said they’ve not been getting addressed “even after being reported”. I know Certis was out - is he really the only one moderating?

No he’s not, but every moderator has plenty of plates spinning in their lives. Generally speaking anything I’ve missed during a day I’ll catch the following morning. It’s the first thing I check after making coffee

Like I keep telling y'all, I'm not a bot. It's just that my posts are of an unusually consistent low quality.

Too bad he's been tagged already.

Hey folks! One thing we'll be doing in the upcoming year is compiling common feature requests and bug fixes, working out a time budget and hiring someone to implement. I've gone through the last 12 months of posts and here's what I've come up with, sorry if I missed something you posted!

I still need to hammer out with Jeff which features are possible and which are too complicated, but for now if there's any other outstanding issues or things you'd like to see please drop them in the thread!

Feature Requests

MP4 GIF support / GIFV support
Full Unicode Support
Add Favorites Tab Main Forum Screen
More Game Identities: Origin, GoG, Epic, Wargaming, etc.
Better Search Option
Customizable Spoiler Tag
Preferred Pronoun in Account Settings
Dark Mode color scheme

Bugs

"New" posts break a few hundred pages in
Recent Content icon Stays Red
Playstation Sig icon goes to wrong page
MS blocking GWJ emails

Being able to unfollow a thread you've commented on (having it not show up in the user's recent activity page) seems to be a pretty consistently requested feature. Alternatively, since favorites seem to be preferred as a solution for this, perhaps threads you create and participate in are favorited by default after your first response and then can be unfavorited later (and perhaps, in that case, "Favorites" could be rebranded as "Followed" or the like).

Good list, especially GIFV support!

It would also be nice if we could get back the ability to embed a Youtube video that plays at a specific time stamp. This was once possible but stopped working some time in the last year or so.

Maybe a user setting for allowing logins to never expire? Or at least doubling how long we stay logged in again.

Amazing list, especially search.

I'd like to second this!

Also, on the mobile site, when I click on 'Forums' and see that there are new threads in Everything Else, etc. I don't know how complicated this would be, but I'd love if clicking on 'new' brought me to the new thread, as opposed to just the list of threads recent posts. Does that make sense?

Bug fix request: don’t allow words in thread titles that are so long they break viewing the forum on iOS.

Excellent one there, yeah.

Yeah, this needs some more consideration for sure. The "Recent" thing was always a default Drupal function people liked for tracking threads they participated in. I don't think we can change how it fundamentally works, which is why we made favorites.

Default favoriting is an interesting idea.

Default favoriting would be great. I still just go to my recents because I don't want to deal with managing a favorites list, and I'll inevitably miss a thread. The fewer choices I have to make each day the better whether or not they're trivial.

The tricky thing about "better search" is it's kinda vague. GWJ has a unique challenge in that we've got SO MUCH content to search through any search engine we'd host on the server would destroy our performance. Third party services have ongoing costs and also add a layer of complexity and upkeep.

If folks with search issues could drill down a bit on why search sucks for you we can look into this more. I think we could work on making Google custom search a bit more specific (specific forum sections, catch-alls only, etc.) but having our own on-server search engine is kind of a non-starter.

This spontaneously fixed itself for me after a few weeks. Still have no idea what triggered it to either start or stop.
