NCAA College Football 2018-19: Official Thread

Congrats to Carlbear on the W. Over the UW.

Syracuse is bowl eligible wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Also, if you're betting on Syracuse, always take the over. Always.

Texas crapped the bed by leaving their two best DBs off the field for a quarter and a half. I have to think with Boyd out there the Cowboys don't build that early lead and the Horns can overcome in the end. Oh well, reversion to form and all. Herman is still doing better than Strong, and unless Ehlinger drops we should at least get another win or two.

I'm glad I went to bed early and missed most of the fourth.

Cal wins 12-10 over UW without scoring an offensive TD

UC Los Angeles, stanfurd, usc all lose. Oregon gets punked in Arizona. If this were the SEC we'd be looking at 4 playoff teams, but its not so the conference sucks. Thankfully the Rose Bowl is not part of this playoff nonsense. It is unlikely Utah makes the playoffs, but I'm hoping they do so they do NOT get to go the Rose Bowl. Until they suffer for 50+ years, they should wait their turn. 25 year probation period before new teams get to go to the Rose. Good luck to the Utes, hopefully you make the less important Fiesta sugar, or whatever bowl. Leave the Rose to WSU.

Oh and on top of this glorious weekend, this is what we look at when we leave the stadium.

Its about 65 degrees, light breeze, no humidity.

GO BEARS.

I am proudly wearing my "Friends don't let friends wear orange t-shirt" today.

Two Ugly Oranges down, one confused mascot orange team to go.

But first a top 10 showdown in Lexington for all the marbles? Hmm, that doesn't seem right, let me check my notes...... Yup, that's what it says. Strange times.

Clemson by 37 over Louisville.

Sounds low to me.

CBS Sports

San Diego State lost.

Stanford lost.

Meanwhile...

FRESNO STATE wins and leaps into the Top 25, all the way to #20!

California College Football Rankings:
1. Fresno State
2. Everyone f*cking else

Can confirm. We were 17 point dogs.

Speaking as a B1G fan: +1 to this.

Or, the Rose Bowl is ground zero for everything wrong about college football. We’ll all be better off when the Rose Bowl ceases to exist, or is relegated to one of loser bowls for the teams that don’t make the 16 team playoffs.

Why so angry? If an undefeated Cal doesn't want to play an undefeated Indiana team in the Peach Bowl, but would rather play the traditional Rose Bowl, how does that harm Alabama? Its quite likely that the winner of the Pac-12 will not be going to the playoffs this year... Cal is mathematically still in it for the Pac-12 championship. Lets pretend it happens.. who wants to see a 10-3 Cal team in the Sugar Bowl?

The playoff committee has released their first rankings.

Bama, Clemson, LSU, and Notre Dame are 1-4.

Syracuse is 19th in the CFP and 22nd in the AP poll, and I feel like I'm taking drugs.

Actually, Syracuse actually being good is perfectly on-brand for 2018.

Hey, right in Fresno's area, high five neighbor!

I'm terrified of Fresno choking against Boise or San Diego so I'm enjoying the crap out of this now while I still can.

I love this season. Kentucky and Syracuse are in the Top 25 (and not for squeaky-shoes) and there's an FSU that's not in Tallahassee in there as well.

Crazy

There is no other FSU.

(Congrats to Fresno, they are having a good year though)

Speaking of how nutty this season is, the ACC has 1.5 teams in that there top 4, and the ACC is hot garbage this year.

Anyway, Week 10! And it's a good one.

I will hate-watch Nebraska-Ohio State at noon. (I hope TOSU wins by 120.)

3:30 slot is absolutely loaded -- Georgia/Kentucky, West Va/Texas, Florida State/NC State and Penn State/Michigan.

And then there's Alabama-LSU at 8.

If you're looking for a reason to sell the kids and buy a 90-inch 20K HyperPlasma SuperDuperHiDef TV*, here ya go.

(* I just made that up. I watch a 32-inch Vizio, which means I know nothing about 21st century technology.)

Top heavy.

I'm hoping for the machination that puts 4 SEC teams in the playoffs.

Michigan and Notre Dame lose a game...

LSU beats Bama, that saves Bama from having to play in the SEC championship game. Alabama in playoffs because 1-loss SEC is like undefeated non-SEC school
Georgia Beats Kentucky this week. goes to SEC Championship Game.
Georgia Beats LSU in SEC championship game. Georgia to Playoffs.
LSU to playoffs because.. .they beat Bama and now UGA and LSU are 1-1.. need rubber match
Kentucky in because 1-loss SEC is like undefeated non-SEC School.

And the playoffs save NCAA football.

Kentucky already has a loss. For your zaniness to work out they'd have to beat Georgia.

But we can't have UK in the championship game. Good grief.

They haven't won an SEC division title in 60+ years and it only happened once with Bear Bryant.

EDIT: Even that one was kind of suspect because both them and Tenn only had 1 loss. But Tenn was 4-1 SEC and UK was 5-1, so somehow UK got the conference title. Even though Tenn beat them. WTF?

So yeah I stand by my previous edit. UK has never won an SEC division or conference title in football. Don't start now.

Hmm, and i forgot about Clemson..

Well, isn't a 2-loss SEC team the same as a 1-loss non SEC school? So if Clemson, ND find a way to lose a game then maybe Kentucky is in?

Technically true also as Fresno State is not Fresno State University, but rather California State University, Fresno. Usually just abbreviates to FS (or CSUF, in which case we're the ones saying there is no other CSUF because f**k Fullerton)

The following is my unpopular opinion:

Abolish the playoff! If you team wants to win a national title, then it needs to win every single one of its games. (Yep, this means my own currently 7-1 Michigan would be out this year.) That's it. Every game matters.

Big Ten vs Pac Ten champ in the Rose Bowl every year.

Oh, and Maryland and Rutgers can go back to whatever conference they were in before. The Big XII can have Nebraska back, if it wants. The Big Ten once again has 11 teams, as it should.
This has been my unpopular opinion!

If multiple teams have undefeated seasons, you'll have dumb stuff going on even more often like last year where UCF actually put signs up claiming to be national champions. After winning the Chik-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Are you claiming that UCF didn't win a part of the split national championship last year?

(Yes, I'm being a little silly here. But I think the fan debates that go on around this stuff are all part of the fun! Would 1997 Nebraska have beaten 1997 Michigan? Maybe! Who knows!)

WolverineJon wrote:

Once upon a time I would have wanted Maryland back in the ACC. No more.

I have no problem going back to just bowls. But you can’t claim a NT just for going undefeated when schools write their own schedules. The BCS got introduced because of that absurdity.

I’d be okay with a 10 team playoff as long as it was just the 10 conference champions. Top 2 highest ranked schools get a bye.

Every other football league in the country, down to freaking little league, has playoffs. It is only college football that has convinced fans that it is just too difficult. In reality, a bunch of rich douche bags want the Bowls because they make money, not because it is good for football.

And the Rose Bowl started it, and the reverence it maintains is why such a large portion of college football fans support utter stupidity to crown a champion.

Yeah Maryland had to be publicly shamed into doing the right thing and firing their coach this week. Not sure anyone wants them right now.
