Steam Winter Sale 2018 Buy-All

First baby due on New Year's Day. Don't think I will be buying anything this winter for me.

Natus, you big silly. Gifted me 2 games from my wishlist anyway. Thanks!

Holidays have come early it seems.

I really did want to play Tacoma, after loving Gone Home. So that one's going to the top of the playlist.

I have my fingers crossed that Rimworld will be on sale.

Shadow Warrior 2 is ten bucks right now. It looks like it couldn't get further up my alley without heavy construction equipment.

What are the odds it's going to be cheaper during the fall or winter sale?

Might buy something, might not...

Funny, in the last months, I haven't purchased a game on steam for a while. I don't even know if my tag still is up to date. :S

I've done okay this year, in terms of finishing games instead of abandoning them part-way through. Even got through POE2 even though I'm traditionally bad at finishing RPGs (ME:A, DA: Inquisition, Divinity: OS and Witcher 3, hello). I really should go back and finish those ones before looking at new stuff like Pathfinder.

I'm not entirely convinced there is great value at the moment; highest on my priority list is Stardew Valley (20% off) and that's principally for the boy. I'm fairly certain the coming Summer/Winter sale will deliver a higher discount (it was once at 40% discount previously on Steam) so if anything I might pick up one copy to appease the lad and wait a few months to pick up the second copy (he wants to play co-op with me).

I recalling hearing that the Dev said that they would not be doing sales anytime soon.

I've seen never, but that is a long time. Probably not in the next 5 or so years I'd think, though.

This is the perfect time to play games, though you'll probably want to stick with things you can play with just a mouse as you'll be up all hours of the night holding a baby, and at that point they're small enough that you can do it with one arm.

I put in a ton of Civ V hours the first few months after my daughter was born.

Edit: As for me, I've done a pretty good job of not buying stuff this year, so I'm looking to pick up a few things from my wishlist. AC: Origins is the one I'd really like to see, but Northguard and Two Point Hospital are also high on my list. I'll probably also pick up Unavowed even if it doesn't go on sale.

Edit, Edit: Also, weirdly, Skyrim on Switch.

In that case I don't think I'll buy it till it goes on sale out of principal!

It's worth every cent of the $35 it is priced at. I've got > 200 hours out of it. But ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sales are all about those percentages! Value does not really matter as much.

How dare they have the tenacity to think their product is worth a certain amount! I demand that 10% saving that I could have made (and more) myself, by buying the game at literally any other stage prior to now!

IMO, for fans of the genre, there isn't anything above it, unless you count Dwarf Fortress.

Oddly, I've always considered myself a fan of the genre, and yet, looking at my steam library there are none that I've played for more than a couple dozen hours. I guess you could count it in the same loose genre as Skylines, in which case I've played that for 50ish hours, and even that is a small amount for the type of game. So in reality, I like the idea of the genre but they rarely grab me enough that I master the game and get the most out of it. Therefore, £27 is expensive for me (and so was £23 when it was that price). A sale would, for Tynan, bring in players who are on the fence or have a slight interest in the genre, but I certainly don't begrudge him his stance.

That, really, is what I'm looking for in a sale. I've set a price target of £15 for Assassin's Creed: Origins. It's obviously a great game in terms of its critical reception, and I'm super interested in the setting, but- I haven't really enjoyed an AC game in the past, and the last time I put any amount of time into a similar game was Witcher 3, and that to me was an extraordinary game.

Then it's more a case of being honest with yourself, rather than looking at the sale price. even 90% off isn't worth it if you're not going to play it. There are a bunch of cheaper games in the genre that I enjoyed, if you need something cheaper to scratch a similar itch.

Wait a sec.... are you saying I should exercise restraint in a sale... resist my impulses and carefully consider my purchases?
I didn't come to this thread for that sort of chat

I think the best play is to restrain yourself through the Halloween and Fall Sales and then have a wild, explosive, messy release during the Winter Sale after you've been pent up for two months. You will blow your own mind, that's how good it will be.

Not at all

What i'm saying is, waiting for, or refusing to buy something you would actually enjoy, until there is a small % discount is a much worse idea than buying another game at 90% off that you wouldn't play/enjoy.

I'm trying to move myself into a 'few large purchases' type of gamer, rather than hundreds of silly small purchases because they were cheap/on discount and end up unplayed or they're not that good anyway, which is why they were heavily discounted.

If I continue down this road, I may actually go back to buying just a few full price games at or near release, if I'll actually play them there and then. It might not work out that I save any money, but at least i'm making better use of the money I do spend compared to just +1'ing my steam library count.

But to each their own!

Are we still talking about games?

Actually I totally agree and I'd like to do that. The trick for me is identifying what those full price games should be.

Yeah, the lack of Demos is a massive PITA these days, and the Steam Refund 2 hour restriction is usually nowhere near enough time to really get to grips with what's going on. Rimworld might be ok for that 2 hours, though. Sure, you won't have a grasp on how to fully play the game, or become fluent in what to do and when, but if it's going to be an instant 'no' for the style game, you'll sure know within that 2 hours.

With or without a 10% discount.

Price to hours played ratio for something you never play is infinite.

Always buy something you are going to play right now. No pile, no worries.

That's what I'm trying to go for. Doesn't remove the risk of buying something and not liking it or not putting many hours into it, but it's still a better use of gaming funds than something that literally never gets played.

*looks at backlog* Uuh.. I'm good. I do plan on gifting out games during the winter sale but what depends on how discounted some games are. I wanted to mass gift one or two titles last time but they were still a bit too pricey for that. As for how I'm doing on getting through games from previous sales, I've beat all of the games I was gifted/bought this year except for two (Firewatch and Shadow of Mordor). Last year is a whole different matter though..

Meh, that's the cheapest I recall seeing it, but look at isthereanydeal.com for its history (I would, but I'm on mobile).

I think I’ll wait for the winter sale. I’m trying to do NaNoWriMo this month, and I don’t need the distraction.

GOG was giving it away for free for a couple of days at the beginning of October, so deal history might be skewed.

I thought that was for the original build engine Shadow Warrior.

Oh well.

nvm

But I like the Pile! It’s comforting and it’ll always be there for me!!!!

My Pile is so enormous it now has its own gravitational field. A few more games and it will become self-aware.
