PlayStation Mini? Gimme!

The Nintendo minis are cool, but this one beats both- PlayStationMini. https://techcrunch.com/2018/09/18/pl...

For $100. So far, there's FFVII, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash!, Ridge Race Type 4, and Wild Arms. Give me some Warhawk, Twisted Metal 2, and we're talking good. Maybe even throw in Blasto! and . Loaded, for giggles.

I said this on this PS4 games thread:

Amazon has opened pre-orders for the PS Classic, and I almost placed one. But I baulked because the full line-up of 20 games has yet to revealed, and because I realised how horrid 1st generation 3D games were likely to look now (particularly, blown up to 720p and beyond) and play.

I think these nostalgia-driven mini-consoles are appropriate for 8-bit sprite games, but there are step too far 32-bit 3D games. Do I want to play Gran Turismo 2 again... now? No, I'll keep the memories.

With 3D games, I think one generation back is about as far as I can go.

Thinking about things further, I wonder whether the PS Classic is also a strangely futile attempt to jump on the classic console bandwagon. Wikipedia quotes Sony as reporting that more than 7,000 titles were released for the PS1 (the majority - interestingly - in Japan). A console restricted to 20 games is guaranteed to leave almost no one satisfied. Particularly, given that some of those 20 titles are currently available on other current/recent consoles.

By contrast, the NES only ever had just over 700... of which 30 found their way on to the NES Classic.

Hmm didn't think to look in the PS4 thread.

I don't understand the draw of these "classic" re-released systems. $50-100 or more for a very limited selection of games. 5-10 minutes on your computer and you can set up an emulator with tens of thousands of classic games for nearly every system dating back to Pong.

Bad ass! Also, for 3D games, depending how they do the emulation, they can actually look better than the original. I remember playing Tekken 3 on my PC at 1024x768/60FPS with some frills switched on and it looked pretty sweet (compared to composite video on my tv anyway).

I'll be interested to see what hackers do with it.

Can i get some Parappa the Rapper? Kthx.

The same could be said about paying full price for games when you can easily pirate them. It's a question legality in some cases and I can see why some people are still against this. Unfortunately some old games being super expensive or really hard to find make it the only way to play some old games so it's not a huge issue for me. I love the ease of use of my snes mini though it gets far more use by my family and I then some emulator on a pc.

That said ps one mini doesnt really appeal to me, alot of these games havent aged gracefully and are still easily available on ps2 and even classics on ps3. If this was strictly 20 classic Jrpgs though I would be in, but I have no desire to go back to awful graphics and early 3d gameplay of any system of this gen. I'll be back on board when dreamcast mini and ps2 mini are a thing.

Couple other games that should be there I think are:
Spyro, Crash, Gran Turismo 2, Tony Hawk, Wipeout. I'd like to see Ape Escape, but no joysticks.

I like that it comes with two controllers, hopeful they have longer cords than Nintendo. I think setting this up on a smaller screen would be a great way to play this, I could see my kids having fun with this.

I certainly agree that, legality/piracy aside (which SHOULD BE ENOUGH... and bear in mind the mods here take a dim view of piracy)... it's about paying money instead of spending time learning how to set up your own emulator.

Theoretically, there's rarely any reason to hire somebody else to do your plumbing, or your home improvement contracting, or taking care of your car, or doing your taxes, or writing your will, or plenty of other stuff... but chances are that for some of them, you decide it's worth the money to free up a few more hours to play video games instead of learning to do it yourself.

Also, there's just something kind of darling about these cute little mini consoles.

But that said, I also agree that many of these games are now quite dated. I'd theoretically like to replay a few 2D RPGs I sold that are tough to get, but I doubt Valkyrie Profile or Arc The Lad are going to be on there. I also figure that, based on how much I've used my NES and SNES mini, I'm unlikely to actually carve out a couple hundred hours to play old games even if somebody handed me a free PS mini. (Also, you know,

I still want to follow this, though. If the emulation eliminates load times, and the device is hackable enough for cheats or loading saves onto the virtual memory card, that also gets more interesting; revisiting an old RPG without needing to grind or stare at load screens is something.

Suikoden 2 has to be on this right? And if that's the case the first 1 is pretty essential as well.

Man I can almost think of 20 rpgs alone that should be on this. It would renew my interest if we got some of the more obscure games from japan on here (dragon quest 5 remake is supposedly fantastic on psone) rather then they heavy hitters of psone though I know that wont be the case.

Edit--- this would be a great time to bring over tobal 2 and moon.

It really depends of the quality of games they put on it, if its 20 of their best games then this thing will sell like hot cakes.

No Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo = no sale.

It's just math.

Give us what we all want.

I definitely find the idea appealing. I don't suffer as much from disgust at the 3D growing pains from the mid-to-late 90's as many others seem to, so the visuals don't bother me. What I do need to know before I can decide is what the remaining 15 titles will be. I have 2 out of the 5 already announced, so this information is key.

Haha, I've been messing around with mine recently! How about best of both worlds though :).

Seems fun, but I kept all the PS1 games I wanted to keep...and looking through my cabinet, apparently a bunch I just never ended up selling as well, I guess? And holy sh*t, I just opened one and it had a receipt from Software Etc. inside.

The other day in the work parking lot, I overheard some fellows complaining that they could't vape in the building because "no one understands the science." This entire column came out in their voice.

I'm getting pessimistic about the remaining games. Both Sony and Gamestop are pushing preorders (the latter more shamelessly leaning on "before they sell out" FOMO). So as I read it...

Best case: They still don't know what they're putting on there. It's getting a little late for that, so in case there are any emulation problems, I have to get super optimistic and hope the unit supports software updates. (Which would mean it was probably hackable, which Sony tends to be aggressive about.)

Worst case: They know what they are putting on there, don't think it'll sell any more units, and are holding the list back for preorders of optimism.

Of course, I hope I'm wrong!

That's about where I'm at too. Good for Sony, making some money off those old properties but that was a butt ugly generation of games. The SNES was the sweet spot for retro gaming imho, and most of the PS1 games I was interested in have already been remastered.

I realized in the last few years I don't even have time to play all the new games I'm interested in let alone go back and play games I liked 20-30 years ago. In the few cases where I'm really craving that nostalgia fix I'll just watch a let's play and that's sufficient.

Full list of games is out. Pretty disappointing IMO.

Seems like a pretty good selection to me. Lots of variety.

Battle Arena Toshinden
Cool Boarders 2
Destruction Derby
Final Fantasy VII
Grand Theft Auto

Intelligent Qube
Jumping Flash
Metal Gear Solid
Mr Driller
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee

Rayman
Resident Evil Director’s Cut
Revelations: Persona
Ridge Racer Type 4
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

Syphon Filter
Tekken 3
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
Twisted Metal
Wild Arms

Highlighted the standouts for me, I dunno I think I'll still get it. The fact that it comes with two controllers in the box helps, I can see having a bit of fun with daughter playing some of these.

No Wipeout, Silent Hill, SotN, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Bushido Blade 2, Tomb Raider, Brave Fencer Musashi, Parappa, Legacy of Kain, Tenchu, Crash Bandicoot....

I guess they had trouble getting some rights.

I can think of reasons for a few of those to be missing, one which you suggested. But the list is solid enough that it you can justify pretty much every game on it. Personally, I'd make it more JRPG heavy, Suikoden 2, Star Ocean 2, Saga Frontier 2, Final Fantasy 8. But that wouldn't appeal to everyone.

I pre-ordered the system when it was announced, if the rest of the games would be good. I did this because I was actually able to pre-order it, unlike another company's mini consoles who shall remain nameless...

After seeing the full game list, I'm not sure if I want to keep my pre-order or not. There are some good titles there. I'm fine with SOTN not being there because I have the XBLA version on my XBOX One. Wipeout, Silent Hill, and Tony Hawk missing is rather disappointing. I knew music rights alone would probably prevent Tony Hawk from happening, but one could dream, especially after the last couple terrible THPS games. I've been wanting to play Tekken 3 for a while now though.

I wonder if some of the titles missing due to lack of Joysticks? Playstation Mini 2 next year?

Sonofa?!? I never in a million years thought that this would have been one that was included. Probably won't pre order but will likely grab one of these at some point.

They should have just made it 30-40 games :).

Definitely 25-30 I think to make this feel worthwhile to retro game enthusiasts and more casual players alike. I’m sure it will be hacked quickly though.
