Football Manager Series Catch-All

On a similar vein, GoldenFM is about to start a series in FM19 with a team he's calling 'Regen Rovers'.

It's a redo of a FM 17 series he did, where, like Benjy's, he created a club and went from there, except in GFM's, he could only use Regen players. That said, it's one of the best FM series I've ever seen, especially the non-league goings-on, which get pretty freaking dramatic at times.

As far as FM 19, I must admit, I've never really engaged with the training before. Back when you could download training routines, I'd just do that, and the last two seasons, I've delegated it to my Assistant.

If they can just assure me that free-kicks and longshots actually work (the former especially), I'll be a happy boy.

I’ve went about 20 years playing these games doing nothing with training apart from assigned coaches so the stars get as close to 5 as possible. Not hopeful it’ll change, but they’ve really struggled to make training fun throughout the years.

So, season 3 at Celtic is going well. League Champs with 8 games to go, etc etc. My Asst Manager gets snapped up (by Everton, no less) to take over there, so good luck to him. Time for a new AM to handle the crap jo...err assist in the running of the team. Advert is put out, I look through the candidates, forgetting that I have set the responsibility of filling the post to the directors.

I bound in to the chairman's office, full of excitement - "got a sound new AM, Italian guy, ticks all the boxes".

Chairman - "We've already signed one, he's waiting in your office".

Walks into my office...and there's Roy f**king Keane.

I've tried to sack him 5 times already, but the board aren't having it. Well, it has only been a month. Maybe the fact that his office has a blackboard on the door with his name written in chalk will give him a clue...if not, the anti-tank mine in his parking space might.

To be fair, there are plenty of managers who don't really spend a bunch of time obsessing over training and leave that up tot heir assistants, while focusing on tactics and motivation. So I don't really need it to be fun, because I'm not interested. I want to be able to delegate it to the AI and for it not to be hamstringing myself.

Also, the AI sticking Dave with Roy Keane as his Assistant is amazing, and would only be topped by them giving him one of the Nevilles.

Well, as soon as the season ended - I gleefully wandered into Roy's broom cupboard brandishing a piece of paper - "see this P45...that's yours, that is." He didn't offer any physical assault, as I am as big as he is and that isn't his thing, the big gutless tosspot.

Unfortunately, the summer has seen me fighting off bids for almost all of my decent players. Ben Gibson (CB) decided that he wanted to go for £17m...quite what the Bernabeu faithful will make of him will be anyone's guess, but I'm thinking that he ain't about to be a fan favourite. Cristiano Pavon persuaded PSG to activate his £33m release clause and went, and there are others in the pipeline.

None of which really matters, as the Khaldoon family have decided that I am the ideal candidate (!?) to take over at the Etihad from Allegri, who went off to the Camp Nou. Third manager at the start of the fourth season - the squad is fantastic (they've added Varane, Isco, Casemiro and a couple of others), but finished a distant third in the league behind Chelsea. I've got to win the league, so naturally saved the game just before taking the job so I've something to fall back on when it all goes pear shaped.

Still, got me an achievement (Childhood Dream) - I also got the Legend achievement for winning the Manager of the Year title 5 times (must be 'ever', as I've only done 3 seasons at Celtic).

Now, do I pull a Roberto Mancini and start wearing my scarf on the touchline.....?

Those are some awesome achievements, grats! Good luck on the job too!

I’ve always said I’d drop any job and take the job at Newcastle if they ever offered me it. They never have, in any FM! So I’ve never actually managed to team I support.

FM 2019 is in beta now for anyone who has ordered that version. I’m tempted to have a small game before the full game comes out. Any suggestions? I’m tempted in the full game to go for Monza since they’ve just been taken over by Berlusconi, but may give it a go now to get used to the game more.

Monza being taken over by Signor Bunga-Bunga is attracting you to them ? I'm surprised you haven't taken the Newcastle job

Seriously, if you want to build a rep that will have clubs in for you, take over at Celtic. The lady in the tea room could probably take over and win that league, and you'll soon have teams trying to get you in even without applying for their jobs - I did apply for the City one, but only because I was linked in the press with it after Allegri took the Barcelona job. I'm not sure whether they'd have approached me directly (although Arsenal, Milan and Lazio all did without me going to them first).

This is what peak sh*thousery looks like.

Sending off Sergio in his own testimonial ? At the Bernabeu ??

Obviously that referee was also in his final game - whether he knew it or not

In the 6th minute too! Hahaha. That's too funny.

If there was one person who you could guess on that happening to, it would be Sergio Ramos.

Just picked up FM19, but I'm holding off on a new start until the game's official release (which I think is next Friday), and I can get all the usual kits/facepacks/badges/names etc. Interestingly enough it appears from the Youtube saves that I've seen that although they now have the Bundesliga licence, this doesn't include the various lower league teams, nor does it include the German national team.

I started an FM19 game as Weston Super Mare and I quite like it so far.

In prior FMs lower league players were always represented in the match engine as people who could barely co-ordinate their perambulatory action and would constantly watch footballs roll right past their feet, or react to opposition attacks by collectively running in random directions like members of an interpretive dance troop performing "Birth of a Universe."

Now they just look like 22 people who aren't very good at football.

I don't know if it's a bug or a feature but at the start of the game the coaching staff at Weston Super Mare was me and a Goalkeeping guy and the staff screen said this was the maximum allowed. I asked the board for more and they declined for financial reasons and then when I tried to shortcut the board and just offer a contract to someone they blocked it.

Then in a moment of accidental inspiration I went into the staff-responsibilities screen and turned the "finds and hires new backroom staff for the first team" flag to "Chairman." Two weeks later I have two new coaches and an Assistant Manager.

They're not the people I would have picked, but they're slightly better than the empty chairs I had previously.

Unfortunate previous experience has taught me not to get too attached to saves in the beta, though that was a few years ago. I just prefer things to stop moving before I go sorting out all my pack downloads.

Same. Like most annual releases, not enough changes from year-to-year in FM to really make a Demo/Beta necessary (beyond, obviously, crowdsourcing bug reports) so I'll wait until the whole kit n' kaboodle comes out before I dive in.

That's not the case this year, Prederick, as significant chunks of the game have undergone a thorough overhaul. Still, no harm in waiting for a week or so.

It does give me a chance to play about with the introduction to the new training and tactics modules to see if I now care about training (unlikely) or am, as usual, going to delegate everything to whoever in the club isn't a complete duffer at it (likely). Still, no harm in having a mooch.

I can also hope for someone to come up with a skin that is less purple.

I had a tiny blast on the new game, but in the end decided I'll also just wait until full release.

My favourite thing I saw was the preset tactical styles. You can just select "gengenpress" or "tiki-taka" and it'll sort it all for you. The tactics seem to be split into different transitions of play, so you can make instructions for with an without the ball.

That is a very nice change that I'm hoping will work well in the new game.

FM 2019 Update.

  • My Weston Super Mare team are 11/1 outsiders away to Slough who are 3/1 on favourites for the match.
  • We play ultra-defensive and it's 0-0 at halftime.
  • 70 minutes in Slough still haven't had a shot on target.
  • They're winning 1-0 because a shot going wide pinballed off two of my defenders and in for an own goal.
  • 90 minutes, still trailing 1-0. Four minutes of added time.
  • 90+3 A hopeful punt over the top is miscontrolled by the opposition defender and falls to my forward who taps home the equaliser.
  • 90+6 - The sixth of four added minutes and the lone Slough forward has the ball at the edge of the area, surrounded by three defenders. My Defensive Midfielder chooses this moment to fly in off a ten step run up and wipe him out.
  • 90+7 Slough score the penalty. It's their only shot on target in the entire game. They win 2-1.

So the good news is all the core stuff is still in the game!

I think that's referred to as 'being FM'd'..and we've all been there

Meanwhile, I think this beta has some significant issues, which need a bit of a tweak. GoldenFM's game appears to have a very large amount of extremely old players.

Still, it's not the first time. I remember one year where in my beta save 90% of the goals were headers from corners - halfway through the season with City, Vincent Kompany was the leading scorer.

EDIT - 700mb patch just dropped this evening, so hopefully that's been ironed out.

Bismark - Have you spent some time with the new training system? Any thoughts one way or another about it?

In my St. Pauli save, I literally lost a game to Arminia Bielefeld where we outshot them 28-1, and lost 1-0 in the 94th minute. I had to walk away from the computer.

Meanwhile, it's launch trailer time!

I'm surprised he didn't become the Assistant Manager and say "were being seriously overrun in the midfield and also, I want to thank the manager"

All of this happening at Watford just makes it that much better, IMHO.

EDIT: Then again, Leicester did win it.

Also, GoldenFM's channel is always great for Real Badges/Real Names/Real Faces fixes he puts up each year. Just a really great YouTuber, that guy.

Yeah, I'm still using his Napoli attack and counter tactics in my Celtic save. I'm looking forward to Regen Rovers, I need a new Youtube series to follow after the end of DoctorBenjyFM's Thames FC series.

Huzzah! Happy Football Manager-mas everyone!

EDIT: It's a tiny thing, but I long for the day when they'll hire someone who can do more styles of black hair other than "buzzcut" and "godawful Afro".

So, started a new Journeyman game. Within the first week of play, Allegri takes over at Real Madrid, and the USMNT hires Marcelo Lippi as their new manager!

Anyway, I'm the new head man at Hemel Hempstead Town F.C., a club I literally have never heard of. Excited to see how this goes!

Congratulations on your appointment as manager of Hemel Hempstead FC !!

I'm currently transferring my 17/18 facepack over to 18/19, crossing fingers that it works. Kits, names etc all need downloading from scratch, but they aren't big files.

Then my annual quest to get 1860 Munchen back into the big time will begin (again).

Oooh, I'm quite liking the new tactical setup. I'm sure I'll be infuriated with something soon enough, but I'm trying very hard this year to sit and do my own tactical builds. Last season was like a 50/50 split between my own and downloaded ones, and now that I'm starting a new Journeyman game, I'd like to make that more of a 75/25 split at least.

I used to work in Hemel Hempstead. It has a magic roundabout.

Due to rules in the financial industry the company that splintered off the one I worked for had to operate from a different property, so we rented the former Hemel Hempstead city council buildings shortly after they'd been condemned and marked for demolition.

One day in September 2000 I had a lorry hit me in the side door on the roundabout just off the M1. Then after getting to work an hour late I got stuck in the broken down lift at the condemned building.

Then after being rescued from there got into the office to be told the company had been sold and I was being laid off.

I just beat Hemel Hempstead 2-1 with my Weston Super Mare side and that might be the happiest memory I have of the place.

Let me know which ones you think work best in a LL situation - 1860 start in 3.Bundesliga (I think), so there's bound to be some proper dross down there...including the 1860 squad, if their current RL performance is anything to go by.
