The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Catch-All

Uh oh... I'm starting to get that Skyrim itch again...

Just play it for a couple of hours and it’ll go away.

Did you try peeing on it?

Just mod it for a couple of hours and never get around to actually playing and it’ll go away. :)

Fixed.

Yeah I've started tinkering around in mod manager myself. Total time modding so far: about 3 hours. Playing: about 10 minutes! This time, seriously, I have to put some time into the game!

Done, done, and done!

Those were three great recommendations. Night to Remember was just really funny, and Frostworth was perfectly timed with the time of year. I'm working on Dragonborn now and I'm pleasantly surprised by the direction it's taken. Looks like I need to add Rise the East to my list too!

I apologise for any minor role I might have played in this...

Once again, now that my game is fully modded (using this unnecessarily long guide) I feel my desire to play has subsided. Ah well, I'll keep it installed this time at least.

Did you make all the dragons look like Thomas the Tank Engine?

Macho Man Randy Savage, actually.

DIG IT!

I am very glad that I decided to look into this!

You're welcome.

I think that’s the key. The second to last time I decided to play I spent a couple of days or so getting set up and then didn’t play much, but I left everything installed. This time I was able to build on that and only spend half a day or so on the modding, so I’ve actually been playing this time.

Looks like Nintendo of Europe has put half the eshop on sale so I'm gonna take another break from Skyrim. Really enjoyed playing it for the last week though, all your input really helped with that, so thanks to anyone who suggested side quests etc. I've made a note of ones I haven't done yet for the next time I play too!

Macho man sad

Ok this is an off the wall question. I have played a whole bunch of Skyrim and I’ve let my 15 year old son play it. It is one of the games that we both can enthusiastically talk about.

So some friends of ours were looking into letting their son play it but they forwarded a review by some parental guidance website that said there are multiple instances of rape and sexual assault in the game and that there are many scenes that are sexually explicit. My wife is kind of giving me hell for letting the kid play it.

Now it is a huge game and I don’t claim to have seen every corner of it. And I’ll acknowledge that it is probably very problematic in its portrayal of women and has plenty of objectification and male gaze. But I don’t remember lots of overt sex in it and I don’t remember any rapes or acts of sexual violence. Is there some of that stuff in there and I just missed it? Or am I so accustomed to sexual violence that it just didn’t register on my radar.

Not feeling great about supporting a game with this kind of stuff in it but I just don’t remember that being in the game. Not feeling like dad of the year for letting the kid play it now. Maybe should just have him stick to Minecraft.

P.S. Apparently these parents let their kid play GTA5 ironically. I couldn’t get past the intro of that game because of the cop killing spree at the beginning but I’ve heard it has some pretty adult themes.

There are no sex scenes of any kind in Skyrim. There are no sex animations. There are no nude models in Skyrim. These can be added with mods. unofficial mods mind you. Just like you can add sex scenes in The Sims by modding it in. If your kid knows how to install mods for sex and where to get them they probably already seen every perverted thing the internet has to offer.

Yeah, it's entirely not that kinda game. Witcher 3 has nudity, and far more sexual references than anything Skyrim has to offer.

Unmodded, it's a relatively safe Fantasy RPG.

GTA5 on the other hand...

My 6 year old has walked in on me playing Skyrim and I felt no need to rush to turn it off. Don't get me wrong I'm not encouraging him to sit and watch, but is there even any foul language in Skyrim? I don't recall any, nor any of the things you mentioned Doc.

Edit: if my son's not playing Skyrim by the time he's 15 (or the latest ES game) then I've failed as a gamerdad.

Ok thanks gang. I haven’t played in a while but I couldn’t remember anything objectionable except for a bit of gore. And he plays on Xbox and now Switch so no nudie mods for sure. I think the website that was referenced is a fundie Christian website so maybe they assume all video games are the path to hell.

DocJoe,
Can you give us the link for this parental guidance website review? I have played over a 1000 hours of Skyrim and there are no overt references to rape that i recall. "Multiple instances of rape and sexual assault" !? Either those guys are talking about a moded skyrim, or maybe it is some puritanical christian website that thinks Harry Potter is akin to satanism ?
Skyrim definitely has no nudity and no actual sex . Violence galore mind you. There is slavery, racism and bigotry.
This is the site my sister uses for her kids
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/gam...

Will have to check with the wife, it came from her friend.

Interestingly the website you cited also states there are rape references in the game.....

There's an origin story for vampires, alluded to in some Dawnguard dialogue, that involves rape.

Well hopefully they won’t find out that gay marriage is possible in the game. They would ban that kid so fast his head would spin.

There are a few bawdy tales lying around on bookshelves, but they mostly involve double entendres. I'll refer you to the Lusty Argonian Maid, Act VII Scene II:

Spoiler:

ACT VII, SCENE II, CONTINUED

Lifts-Her-Tail: My goodness, that's quite a loaf! But how ever shall it fit my oven?

Crantius Colto: This loaf isn't ready for baking, my sweet. It has yet to rise.

Lifts-Her-Tail: If only we could hurry that along. How would I accomplish such a task?

Crantius Colto: Oh, my foolish little Argonian maid, you must use your hands.

Lifts-Her-Tail: You wish me to kneed [sic] the loaf? Here?

Crantius Colto: Of course.

Lifts-Her-Tail: But what if the mistress catches me? Your loaf was meant to satisfy her appetite.

Crantius Colto: Don't fret, my delicate flower. I'll satisfy the mistress's cravings later.

Lifts-Her-Tail: Very well, but I'm afraid my oven isn't hot enough. It could take hours!

Crantius Colto: Plenty of time, my sweet. Plenty of time.

END OF ACT VII, SCENE II

This is bananas. You folks know me, I’m first in line when it comes to criticizing games and the way they treat women.
Skyrim isn’t winning any medals (are above, there’s some objectification and ridiculous “boob armor”), but no sexual assault and no rape portrayed. At all.
To be honest, I would’ve said there wasn’t even any mention of either, but my memory perhaps isn’t completely reliable.
There’s just so much worse out there. Of course, if you start using mods, there are some crappy, sh*tty kids out there, but the vanilla game is totally safe in my opinion.

Especially when you put GTA5 next to it. Not touching that one, not even with a ten foot pole.

Off-color joke:

It's been awhile since I played Skyrim, but I remember a couple lore books and quest dialog that made what seemed like allusions to rape or sexual assault, but I don't remember anything specific.

However, I'd send your wife's friends some video of the first-person sex scenes in GTA V. Not as a kind of gotcha but so that they can make a more informed decision. There's no way in hell I'd let a 15 year old play GTA V.

Thanks, I kneaded that.

Perhaps you're right. The only one I remember though is the Lusty Argonian Maid, and that was rather tame.

The part where she lifts her tail?
