Hellgate London catch all

Not only did I buy it on release day, I also got the lifetime subscription. And a lot of good it did me, right?

I actually enjoyed the game at the time (I can't/won't vouch for whether I would now) because it combined elements of Diablo I liked with a 3D environment. Lots of good ideas that didn't have their potential realized, I always thought.

I got the lifetime sub as well. And I did have a lot of fun with it. I guess Firefall scratches that itch for me now, minus the procedurally generated dungeons.

This is kind of fascinating... Has there been any ongoing development for it or did something buy the rights and code? (I've been secretly hoping with the resurgence of superheroes that City of Heroes might some day come back online. :))

HanbitSoft bought the game for Korea back in 2008 and the game has been alive over there since then. They're also the company who snatched up Mythos [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythos_(computer_game) ].

Anyway, the Korea companies who own the property are working with Redbana Corporation to bring the game to the world along with a new chapter to the game.

This is great news, I hadn't heard this before. I really miss City of Heroes, especially the character generation system. Frankly that and the power pools was all I missed, the actual setting of Paragon City was pretty bland overall. Will have to keep an eye on Redbana to see what they can do with it.

City of Heroes you say?!? You'll be interested in this then.

Path of Exile has been greatly enhanced and added to, it's a lot of fun for a hack 'n' slash. I enjoyed Hellgate London as a demon shmup, but PoE is way better.

Well well, this is an interesting development. Interesting indeed.

I thought City of Heroes was still online, playable f2p? Last time I checked was probably 18 months ago. It went dead permanently, then?

Hellgate remains too disappointing to try again. Such a cool concept, almost bewilderingly devoid of fun.

Oh my god.
That game just wont stay dead.

Yeah-I'm in day one! Loved the game, and still do.

OMG WUT

I'm genuinely interested at the right price. I know the game was flawed, but I liked the demo and it had potential.

The description of that game is full of typos and generally bad english. The screenshots look like a generic bad FPS. Looks like just flogging a cheap license to me. I wouldnt expect any actual relation to Hellgate.

Hanbitsoft did buy the rights at some point, probably got some asset flipping studio to flip this.

Edit: I found some related stories:
Hanbitsoft bought the rights TEN years ago! http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...
and created a new studio in San Francisco http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...

They made it a point to state "single" player multiple times. So I guess it's safe to say there is no multiplayer as in the original?

I believe this is a re-release of the F2P game they turned it into plus the expansion Hanbit developed. So, it's very much Hellgate London just ... revised.

Wow. The trailer on the Steam page is just the 10 year old Blur teaser re-edited with an extra overlay of bad sound effects.

One of the games I bought the Lifetime Pass on back in the day. I frickin loved the original, warts and all.

What athros said.
They did do some stuff in the free version that was nice such as add a summoning circle or some such where it would summon all your available pets at once. I think it was configurable so that you could summon 3 fire, 2 phase or 1 earth, 2 fire and a lightning or any combination thereof.
Plus they added samurai themed armor and weapons.

Oh man I loved that game! I am very in on this. I loved the atmosphere, would be great to see it expanded.

Same here, was a lifetime subscriber, loved it on release, looking forward to playing it again.

This was the first game that I played as a different class other than ranged hunter. Played entirely through with a friend as a tank. Couldn't deal a lick of damage but also couldn't die. I think the final boss fight consisted of me standing and soaking up damage while my friend would nuke him, die, respawn, repeat.

They need to fix the level scaling in this game a bit. I remember the end of the campaign was level 30 content and it seemed unless you scoured every side quest you would end up at the last boss only level 24-25. Some classes could handle the boss 6 levels above them but my summoner struggled quite a bit and even had to back track to level up some.
I know it is very common to grind areas in ARPGs but HGL did not seem to have very good or convenient areas for this.

I wonder how that works with this version with the Tokyo areas. Do you get access to Tokyo at a certain level or do you have to complete the London campaign in order to head to Tokyo?

edit: I too am a lifetime subscriber. And to be honest, I have revisited this game several times over the last 10 years. I would love to see a real reboot in the Division engine

WTF?

Better late then never. I would play it again if it brought back co-op.

It's released. On sale for 25% off for the first week. For me that was just under $10. I used to play solo, so not too much difference for me. Tons of complaining and trolling in the official steam forums, but then again, it's the official steam forums. Still, I'm having fun

$10 is enough for me considering I have had the DVD in my drive for ~10 years!

I did run into my first issue, and it seems a lot of people have had the problem. I was doing a mission called Cynthia's 4th city or something like that. After a bit of killing and respawning of critters, my FPS dropped down to about 1 and I couldn't do more than watch the slideshow. I was having fun, and had no issues doing the other quests, but I'm concerned about other areas that have lots of creatures within it.

At this time I don't intend to ask for a refund though. Hopefully they'll have a fix or something.

Just figured I'd throw out the warning.

edit: was using Very High Textures...lowered it to High and lag went away. Doesn't look as pretty, but it plays better.

I've only played a bit of London 2038, so this was fun since I prefer single player anyway. I chose the engineer because it looked different, and OMG I LOVE BOTS.

OK, downloaded it. Graphics are bad, interface is clunky. Gameplay is paper thin.

But oh man is it fun to be playing this again! I really wish someone would make a modern version but I think this will be worth the $10 price tag, at least for me.

oof. This has really gone through the translation grinder hasn't it? Most of the text reads like it was google translated from English into Korean, and then back again!

Still...not really a game you play for the story, more for the mildly entertaining novelty grind. And at least the price was low enough to make it worth an impulse buy. Plus it will be interesting to see the later areas like Stonehenge which I never got to see because I refused to pay a subscription fee for non-mmo content.
