MMA Catch All Thread.

Well, Ron Artest wasn't banned for life and he went after a fan. Tyson bit Holyfield's ear off and wasn't banned for life.

What are some examples of athletes getting lifetime bans? We've got that Judo guy at the Olympics who kicked the ref...and IIRC, some Tae Kwon Do guy got a lifetyban for sexuall assault.

I'm not against lifetime bans for both but yes, Mac earned his after the dolly. The Commion has to take a really hard line or fighters will continue to mimic and escalate this junk.

So, a 10-day suspension.

Barring saying (and doing nothing) is there anything the Nevada Athletic Commission could have done that would have less of an impact?

Agree on McGregor and Khabib, Rawk.

Jon Jones actually has a good case to return, though. Whatever the substance was he tested hot for after his last fight showed up in only one sample in too low of an amount to have an effect on his performance or training, and not in samples taken shortly before or afterward. It’s pretty likely he received a microdose accidentally, just as has happened for other fighters who have returned after shorter suspensions than his current one. The most common way for that to happen is that the factories that produce athletes’ nutritional supplements don’t only produce USADA-level supplements so USADA-banned stuff sometimes gets mixed in, just like how some of your food packages say ‘is produced in a facility that also processes peanuts and other possible allergens’. Jon Jones is being held to a stricter standard since he has such a long history of cheating and being a criminal and douchebag before that sample.

The whole business reminds me of how white kids with rich parents used to get away with all manner of atrocious and cruel behavior in school when I was growing up and the moment one of their victims fought back it was suddenly an issue and that "both sides" had to be punished equally. The fact that this happened is entirely on the UFC for tolerating all of McGregor's bullsh*t for this long.

It was cathartic watching him get his ass beat solid for the entire fight and finished the way he was. It was great seeing him cheating the entire fight and still getting smashed like the little Female Doggo he is. I just wish Khabib kept him around for another round and smashed his f*cking face in.

Geez that's a good analogy.

Wikipedia has a list. Probably the most notable names are Lance Armstrong and Tonya Harding. McGregor almost went full Harding.

Jon Jones is pretty reliably a scumbag, and I love it and I can't wait to watch him fight again.

So I clicked through all that. The greatest number of the bans were for various forms of match fixing, including by a referee and a team owner, and the next greatest number were for doping.

To me, the most interesting bans were for Gordon McKellen, a skater turned coach who was banned for having inappropriate relations with underage skaters who still coaches remotely by video and Damir Ryspayev, a hockey player so aggressive that he started a fight minutes into a game that caused the game to be cancelled. His was the closest case to what McGregor and Khabib have been up to. I would rank Khabib's as worse than Ryspayev's since the competition was over when the extraneous violence began.

As for McGregor, there weren't any bans for random violence committed away from the athletes' sporting events except Tanya Harding's, but that violence was committed by her ex-husband, not her, and must have been in part for her efforts to hinder prosecution.

f*cking lmao dude, we are in a thread on a gaming forum talking about a blood sport we all watch.
You crack me up.

So it looks like someone has audio of what was going on in the cage for real and the parody I posted is not terribly far off. It turns out, as Khabib was beating the everloving snail snot out of McGregor in the ground and pound, he was saying something to the order of "You like to talk. Let's talk now. Why aren't you talking?". And right after McGregor taps out, he says twice "It was just business." as if that somehow justified his actions.

He's a little Female Doggo.

You're saying that because it's MMA and not hockey, it's more okay to attack your opponent and his coaches outside of the sanctioned legal fight, at the time when in every other UFC fight there is strutting and celebration, sometimes taunting, but no additional violence? Remember that fighting/boxing/MMA is only legal in this circumstance because the law says it will not prosecute offenders in the strictly controlled environment of the boxing/sport commissions. Try it without them even with mutual consent and the law steps in. It's clear that Khabib's actions were outside the competition whereas at least I can't say where the distinction is between acceptable and unacceptable fighting in hockey, nor why hockey fights seem to be likewise exempt from criminal proceedings.

It is known.

Zidane was right to headbutt his opponent as well. Hopefully that makes my position clear.
If McGregor wants to lean into the Chael Sonnen race baiting role, as he did in his boxing promos, as he did here, as he did before the Aldo fight, outcomes like this shouldn't be unexpected and in my opinion are definitely not warranting of a life time ban given how the promotion has been run in the past.

There are legitimate critiques of Nurmagomedov (the assosication with Kadyrov for instance, this applies to a surprising number of fighters), but the blatant race baiting leading up to the fight shouldn't be acceptable under any circumstances.

I agree. And the same goes for Joanna Jemchechek-amacallit. For the disgusting things that she said to Rose Namajunas leading up to their bout.

Rose is awesome.

When dudes in my vecinity start talking about sports, they will often ask me “who do you like?” Then I will say, “MMA is the only sport that I follow.”

Last night I was ashamed to admit that. I just didn’t want to get into it about the Connor shenanigans. Thanks for ruining MMA, Connor.

Ugh, time to stop pretending Dana has any integrity.

https://www.mmafighting.com/2018/10/...

Fingers crossed that at least Nevada will ban at least one or two names.

“We’re good,” White said. “We’re good with Khabib. You guys are still posting that s**t, that was a week ago. A week ago! A lot happens in a week in this business.”

Alright everyone. Settle down! It’s been a whole week since it happened. Why are you dwelling on it?

“We’ll get it all worked out. Guys get very emotional, man. That was a very emotional fight for him, obviously. And at the end of the day, Khabib’s a great guy. We’ve always had a great relationship with him. So it’s all good, brother. This will all work out.”

Maybe the Russian crime lords are leaning on White. Probably not though.

Pretty sure that's just Dana doing what Dana does.

Annnnnd STILLLLLL!!!!!

DC first to defend two belts at two separate weight classes.

Lesnar's next, which will be a great payday for DC. I'm sure lots of folks want a third fight with JBJ, but I'm thinking Bonesy isn't going to get past Gustaffson.

DC rides into the sunset as one of the greatest of all time and perhaps the best ever if you award points for never juicing.

Yeah, it's great to see all the good things coming DC's way. I don't know how I feel about DC fighting Jones again. It'd be great if he capped off his career with a victory over Jones, but it'd also be pretty awful if he went out with a third straight loss to him.

Great show by Adesanya too. Wouldn't be surprised if he's up for a title shot in two or three fights time.

After watching Ortiz v Liddell III, I'm now so, so ready for Liddell to stop coming back. I think the opportunity to retire gracefully passed him by a long time ago.

It's boxing but this was an excellent read: https://deadspin.com/the-rise-and-fa...

Not a good day for Australian MMA fans. Especially kind of sad that's how Mark Hunt goes out (in the UFC, at least).

I remember his K-1 days. He's not done. He'll find a good home in Bellator.

As I understand, after he retired he had an "on paper" job with the UFC. As in he got a salary but wasn't expected to do anything. I believe several old timers got this, as a thank you of sorts for making the UFC what it is. After the UFC was sold and bought, the new management has gone through and eliminated those jobs. So, some of the fighters now have no steady income, so you see them taking these fights for the pay. I'm sure plenty of them don't mind taking a few punches and an L for several hundred thousand.

Not the case for all of them, but some.

How is Chuck Liddell in need of money now? He had to have made several millions during his heydey especially considering his outside fame (Entourage, appearances, etc). Especially when getting no show gigs for several hundred grand for years (if true). I would have thought with his accounting background he'd have been socking away cash.

It'd be nice if UFC did something like pensions (lol at "nice" and UFC). Why couldn't athletic commissions or state legislatures require pension funds for combat athletes, if for no other reason than to avoid fighters taking on too much risk for a payday later in life?

Top_Shelf wrote:

He does seem like a man who enjoys cocaine.

Top_Shelf wrote:

You can ask the same question of a lot of pro athletes or lottery winners or anyone, really, who got a ton of money all at once.

Or maybe he just wanted to fight. Liddell used to be pretty good at one thing -- punching people in the face. Problem is, he's at an age where face-punching isn't such a great vocation. Dude proved it in his last (and I hope, final) fight.

Jon Jones tested positive for steroids. Believe it or not! So surely the UFC will just suspend him and put a replacement in to fight Gustafson? Nope, they're moving the entire event from Vegas to LA on one week's notice, in order to get around Nevada's rules.

Has anyone had a harder time keeping awake during title fights as tonight’s two?
