Non-game Android Apps Recommendations Catch-All

Yeah I've praised it many times in the Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu threads.

A coworker thanked me for telling him about the Just Watch app/website today, so I'm mentioning it here. It's another service like CanIStreamIt that tells you where a show or movie is streaming, but with a lot more features. Tell it what all services you have and it will let you browse them, for instance.

Well.... uh...

At least I knew about it

Yeah, that app is awesome, thanks for the tip.

So I've been using AquaMail Pro for awhile as my business email client (I keep personal email on Gmail to help keep work/life balance in check). Lately, I've been a little frustrated with some of its functionality. Any other snappy professional email clients that I should check out? Using a Pixel 2 with Android 9.

I use Outlook's app for my work Office 365 account. Does what I need.

Grr... I had hoped to recommend a fantastic app I use on iOS, but it's not available for Android... yet.

Keep an eye on Spark. It's really good.

That'll be great - I was bummed when Newton folded. I was a backer/subscriber from Day One and none of the other alternatives are really satisfying my needs.

I used to use Touchdown, but apparently Symantec bought it then killed it. Cool story bros. We've been forced onto Airwatch due to encryption requirements. We no longer get to pick our own mobile clients.

I'll have to try this again. I used an older version of it and it was OK.

Yay for another what's a good podcast app question, but with a twist!

I've been using PocketCast on Android and now iOs for years now, and am very happy with it.

Is PocketCast the current best-in-class podcast app?

I'm currently using Downcast on iOS, but am about 95% sure I'm switching to Android when I upgrade my phone next. My most-used features of Downcast: variable-speed playback, sleep mode (e.g. turn off the podcast on a timer, smart playlists and Carplay (Android Auto) compatibility.

If he's talking Pocket Casts, it's the best I've ever used. The (admittedly paid) ability to listen in a browser as well is so, so worth it.

So I needed a new app to try and make sense of Twitter. I'd been using Talon for a while, but it didn't seem to help, so today I tried Fenix 2.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...

It's SO MUCH BETTER, and that it can send notifications just for the lists I care most about is PERFECT. Now rather than try to figure out what to look at, I just get a nice notification if a developer has Tweeted something new, and can catch up on the rest at my leisure.

I like Flamingo for twitter and BeyondPod for podcasts.

Never liked pocket casts the few times I tried. Beyondpod's UI is passable at best, but there are too many things I dislike about other podcast apps so I've stuck with this one.

I just use the built in Google assistant for podcasts. "Ok Google, play the latest gamers with jobs podcast." It can make a home screen icon for you for whatever you're listening to. I just stick 'em in a folder. Tapping the icon lets you list episodes, download and listen.

With PocketCasts, you don't even need to download 'em.

Har har. Apparently there's a Google podcast app, too, but the assistant does everything I need. Reviews called it pretty barebones a few months ago, so if you're a power podcaster it may not do what you want. Its big plus is discovery, because it can use everything Google knows to recommend things.

I liked Flamingo for Twitter, but I had problems with opening tweets with replies, where the app would just hang for a long time. Happened on two different phones and a tablet.

Switched to Fenix 2 and never looked back. These are two of the only clients that dealt with lists well.

I'm a fan of Castro for my podcast app.

So guys, Google is killing Inbox, and I'm livid. I love Inbox so much.

But fine, as long as Gmail gets stuff like snoozing, I'll be fine.

Or so I thought. The Android Gmail app is behind Inbox in a few ways. It keeps switching inbox views on me, and it doesn't support HTML signatures.

So might y'all know a good Android email app that both supports HTML signatures along with supporting snooze functionality? None of the apps I've tried have fit the bill.

Thanks!

I'm getting really tired of the Android team abandoning useful apps.

And releasing barely functional ones. YouTube Music is an embarassment.

Yep still using Hangouts over here and ignoring the two separate apps they tried to replace it with.

Hey there fellow Android users!

I'm looking for some recommendations for listening to podcasts on my Samsung phone. I'm currently using Samsung Music but recently it keeps forgetting where I am in an ep and just restarting the whole episode... So annoying.

I'm looking for a basic free app that'll play the podcasts that I download through my browser. I'd also like to be able to create playlists to keep different podcasts separate and in order. Lastly, and this is where things get a bit 'pie-in-the-sky', I'd like to be able to pause a Podcast, come back to it the next day, and for the Podcast to just continue playing from whatever point I left it at.

Google Podcasts (It's also built in to the Google Assistant in the Google app.)

Thanks BadKen, the last time you recommended me something it worked out quite well. I'll give it a try!

Google Podcasts is extremely bare bones. You might give Stitcher a try if you find that frustrating:

Yeah, I'd recommend if you listen to many podcasts and do any kind of complex playlisting, etc, just go ahead and spend a few dollars on an app like Pocket Cast.

If you just want bare bones, Google's probably adequate.

I like it because it is clean and simple. Like me.

I tried using pocketcast and it baffled me.

Pocketcasts is pretty good but some of the UI is a bit annoying. Also it's started crashing on me a bunch, but that might be my specific device. Pro: it lets you pick up any cast where you left off, not just the most recent one.

Anyway, I'm here to ask, years ago, I had an app that let you choose how long you wanted your phone to go into silent for. I think it was called shush. Any other recommendations for the same thing?
