Assassin's Creed Odyssey RPG-all

It also has romance options. I elected to not engage with the first romance-able NPC I encountered, but still ended up recruiting her for my ship crew. Overall, I think it takes everything that Origins did well and cranks it up even further. I'm enjoying the game more (and I liked Origins) and I care about Kassandra far more than I did Bayek.

I played about 10 hours so far. I like the combat changes. Origins was my first AC game and I loved it. Combat is a bit better here.

I think my biggest complaint with the game is just how much of a performance hog it is. It really needs more optimization. Otherwise, it has been a fantastic experience and has me excited for the series.

Check out this article that has a solid guide to optimizing settings. Some stuff that really hits performance isn't super obvious. Like the cloud setting is apparently a giant performance hog, and you really don't lose anything running that at a lower setting. I basically copied that guide, and I'm getting an average of 50fps at mostly very high settings, at 1080p, running on an i7 47xx and a Radeon 480.

How much ship combat is there?
I mostly liked Origins, but really hated whenever that ship combat appeared. Early PR about the game seemed to indicate an increased focus on ships.

12 hours in, and I only recently got my ship. So far, I sailed it from A to B, fought three enemy ships on the way (scripted fight), and then spent five hours on land. But 12 hours in the game is just scratching the surface.

20 hours in and I haven't done very much at all. Seems pretty minute at this point.

I'm generally not a fan of level scaling systems. They seem like kind of a cheap way to balance complex games. I understand why they do it though.

I think this game would have been better if they had kept the underlying math and systems, but completely hidden the level number from the player. Maybe mark out dangerous areas with some sort of an evolving heat map.

There was a big patch yesterday. Not clear what it did, but my subjective impression is that they improved the look of the environment at the mid-far range.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of level scaling either. If I spend a bunch of time leveling up, I want to feel powerful. If I do so much of that that I'm way OP and steamrolling everything, that's great by me. Either let me turn scaling on or off like in Origins, cap it (I understand Odyssey does this to a certain extent, but I haven't seen it ), or let me jack the difficulty up.

I'm 45-ish hours in and I've seen one naval combat related side quest. Everything else ship related are bounties. So fat, no main quest stuff outside of the ship tutorial. I'm sure that will change later in the game but I think, for the most part, you could just treat the ship as a big horse to get from island to island and bypass most of the combat.

I've had quite a few crashes the last couple of days, usually just as I start moving into a fort after picking off random solo guards. Hopefully the patch fixed whatever was causing that.

Well, just because I'm not doing ship stuff doesn't mean I'm not kidnapping everyone worth kidnapping to be on my crew. It's possible I played too much MGS5, so I can't break the habit of fultoning everything in sight.

Also, ships get cool figureheads and sails, so you can totally play dress up with your boat.

Twitch Prime has some free aesthetic items for members including a mount, boat, and some pirate gear.

Linking my accounts has been the most difficult quest so far.

I just glanced at the directions and yeah, it looked like there were several steps to link your PSN/XBOX/STEAM, Twitch, and Uplay accounts.

It's surprising how happy it made me that somebody liked my screenshot of a dog peeing.

There are limits to the level scaling. The infamous boar tops out at level 14. At level 16, while speccing into full Warrior, I was able to defeat it without too much difficulty.

So agree - im bouncing off this game because every time i get to a mission it seems everyone is one level above me and i either get slaughtered or have to go spend ages levelling up and come back.

Is level scaling not a toggle? It was a toggle in Origins.

Not that I can see in the options

Regions scale to a certain extent so there is a cap that you will eventually hit and thus roll over everything.

Level scaling didn't work that way in Origins. It does not scale enemies down if your level is too low. It makes them stronger (within limits) if you have outleveled an area.

If you are always finding yourself underleveled for an area, you aren't doing enough side activities besides story quests. I haven't played Odyssey, but I understand there are a variety of different ways to gain experience outside the main quests. Find something you enjoy and do that.

Remember that AC games are not "quest corridors." The open world AC games are not designed as a linear experience. AC Origins onboarding was very good at pointing this out right from the start. As soon as you finish the introductory mission, your buddy shows you his list of things that need doing. There are several quest chains available from the start, and some of them have bonus objectives that can give you even more rewards.

Hopefully Odyssey has something similar at the start.

I need to get it uploaded tonight, but I got a good one last night. In the third region the story takes you to, there's a sync spot in a tree branch that is placed next to a mountain cliff. I was on my horse when I came riding up on it and my horse ended up with his front hooves on one of the large branches of the tree. I don't know why I didn't think of it at the time, but I think I might go back tonight and see if I can get my whole horse in the tree. Seems like it "should" work...

I'm doing all side quests and most of the ? icons I find. So far, I've only run across a few quests that were higher level than me. All of those were obviously optional side stuff, and they were significantly higher, so it's clear they're intended as later game stuff. All the mainline story quests and major side quests have been at my level, and going up with me. Haven't hit any that are actually higher level than me yet.

So I guess the takeaway is that the level curve is built to encourage you to do at least some side stuff, but doesn't require that you do tons. I bet if you stick to all the gold quest markers and maybe do the odd ? location that you run across, you'll be fine.

And no, level scaling as a toggle option is definitely not present like it was in Origins.

I'm doing minimal amount of side quests so either people are running into areas that are significantly set at a higher level (nothing scales down AFAIK) and getting WTF'pwnd or something else is going on.

I will say at one point the game seemed to take you to the second area for an extended period.. but following the main storyline you really are just making a pit stop at Phokis to complete the first ship quests and then you should immediately go to Megaris as your actual second area. If you stick around in Phokis then yeah I can see you getting frustrated as the level scale there is going to be at least 2-3 levels higher than you are currently at when you leave the initial zone.

You know, I really disliked the ship segments in Origins too - but I think because they were very structured, linear setpieces that just felt like an interruption. So far I'm enjoying the ship combat a lot more in Odyssey, it's a bit more like Black Flag as it feels better integrated with the overall experience, plus the customization options are fun.

Anyway, when I first started playing I wasn't too excited, it all felt just so similar to Origins. Now that I'm like 6-7 hours in I'm enjoying it a lot more, as the game steadily reveals its unique differences and comes into its own. Plus the early choice offered in the Wolf situation was super satisfying, hope to see more of these kind of choices.

Kassandra is amazing and I genuinely care about her and enjoy her dialog, animation, and voice acting. IMO Baek was mediocre by comparison.

I played LOTR Shadow of Mordor and found the Nemesis system interesting, but the game as a whole got redundant pretty quickly. Odyssey adopts that mechanic with the Mercenary system, sprinkles in a few other cool new features, and improves upon Origins base game mechanics, environment, and story. Last night, I was having a lot of fun running around doing miscellaneous side quests, points of interest, main quests, side quests, etc. and ended up pulling in multiple bounty hunters at several points.

During my favorite encounter so far, the target in my quest separated from the rest of his group of NPCs and gave me an opportunity to take him out before cleaning out the camp. The first couple of times I attacked, I ended up being spotted by a named Lieutenant and several minions who were quickly followed by a bounty hunter or two. I ended up dying several times, but finally managed to take out my objective without being seen and earned a Legendary item in the process.

After that, I decided to clear out the camp, but I kept getting spotted. 1 to 2 new bounty hunters would come rushing in, and the Lt - a really tough bastard - would annihilate me in a single combo. After about 10 reloads, I finally thinned the herd and engaged the Lt by himself, but one of the bounty hunters decided to pop in. To my surprise, the Athenian Lt attacked the Spartan bounty hunter; I sat back and watched them whittle each other down before running in to finish them both off and received a Legendary and an Epic item for my (lack of) effort.

I can honestly say, Odyssey has already provided one of the coolest gaming experiences I can recall. I enjoyed Origins, but I like Odyssey even more.

Chiming in to the defense of not feeling under leveled, at least where I am now at lvl 12. I certainly don't feel as if I've had to grind. A surprising number of the entirely aside, and self contained, XP hoover one-off contract quest (etc) have enjoyable dialog hooks with the contact person. Very Witcher 3-is in the execution. Also, Witcher 3 still had a number of (?) marked 'bandit' camp spots that were just straight up fights so this balances out in my eyes.

I don't feel that Odyssey is as 'deep', by a measurable margin to temper expectations, but they did a great job considering all the voice work necessary for Kassandra and Alexios -- having that choice is a big deal for folks that couldn't gel with 'being Geralt'. I was, mostly, ok with assuming Geralt as the protagonist but the lament is certainly valid for those that didn't take to the character and were subsequently bounced off of W3.

The short version: this came out of nowhere (for me) and has proven more enjoyable than many games I had on my radar for the last year coming. I would kill to have a hybrid of this expanded to a full on Elder Scrolls game.

I caved and picked it up, even though I’m still not done with Origins. So far it’s been really fun. I’m playing on Nightmare, at least for now, and it’s been a decent challenge.

Spoiler:

The first bounty hunter you have to take down was really tough. Took me several attempts before I was able to kill him.

I started with Alexios but will probably play Kassandra at some point. Story seems interesting so far. I’m planning on doing everything I can before moving on to the next area, just like I played Origins. That should keep me at a higher level so I shouldn’t need to grind.

I reached level 20 today, which means I no longer take any fall damage. Yay!

I also learned that you can throw torches, which makes getting through dark tombs much easier, as when you find a snake, just chuck a torch at them. They will either burn, or if you miss, then you have an easy light source to shoot them.

Another thing about leveling - the main quests may start at a higher level than you, but they will then level up with you, meaning that they will always give suitable rewards.
