Doctor Who *Spoilers Abound! We've lost Containment*

I liked it, and I liked the new Doctor.

It would have been nice to know in advance that there was going to be a global simulcast starting in an hour and 15 minutes.

The later showing is going to have extra footage, so there's that.

I am curious why it was not called The Women Who Fell To Earth. Oh wait... It's a tiny bit dusty in here.

That was a very strong start!

As much as I liked Capaldi as The Doctor, the show was so stale I didn't even watch the last season.

This felt so fresh yet familiar. She felt very Tennant-y but with her own twist. I enjoyed that a lot.

REALLY liked the episode. Very excited to see more.

Spoilers, sweetie.

(Loved the episode and if this is any indication, we are in for a fun time with Jodie Whittaker).

This was not my first attempt to get into Dr. Who but I like it so far so I will give this a go. I have seen more spoofs than I have seen of the actual show. I like the feel of the show.

Is there any terminology I should know or are they going to explain this as we go along?

The extent of what I know is below in spoof form.

Spoiler:

Didn't really care for the first episode. I was a little disappointed in the Doctors entrance. I wanted a epic save but got nothing really. I did like the new actors. I'm not sure if one is a companion or if they both are.

The bad guy looked ok. I thought the reason why the was on the planet was dumb, standard who stuff though. I did think it was a little silly for the doctor to chastise the guy that kicked the bad guy since it did kill multiple people and tried to kill him.

Looks like the main death of the show wont have much impact. Lots of shows do this. A character dies that is important to other people but the other people go on like nothing happen. hmmm unless we see more of a reaction in the next episode but I doubt that.

Overall poor start for me but I'm still looking forward to more Who. Also this wasn't the worse start to a new season. Oh one thing I did like was the guy not playing stupid. Also the cop lady isn't playing stupid. hmmm do who companions ever really play stupid. Mickey the idiot wasn't really stupid, the doctor was just mean to him. I wonder if this means we will have two companions playing the same role or if one is getting dropped.

Was it just me?

I thought it was fine, I may have gotten my expectations up a bit. Jodie Whittaker seemed a bit wooden but it usually takes an episode or two for The Doctor to “set” after a regeneration, I’m sure she’ll get better. I really liked the new companions, though, even if the bicycle thing was a bit ridiculous.
Overall it looks like they might be regressing back to the cheese of the RTD era after going too far in the other direction with Capaldi- I feel like they got the mix just right during Smith’s run but as long as they don’t bring back the farting aliens I’ll be fine. I’m just glad Who is back.

Nope, I thought the exact same thing.

I liked the bike thing. I didn't at first but I thought they gave a good reason for it later on in the episode. I'm guessing it will be a recurring problem he has to overcome.

.......I don't get it?

Minor episode spoilers.

Spoiler:

"So today I want to talk about the greatest woman I've ever met". It turns out he wasn't talking about the doctor and I loved that. For the last few regenerations, we've had scene after scene of companion's waxing lyrical about how amazing the Doctor is. How special he is and how much they love him. Moffat himself seemed to be very much in love with the Doctor and while that's understandable it makes for poor television. I felt at times as if he were writing and directing as a fanboy. Everything became about the Doctor. The Doctors feelings. The Doctors loneliness. The Doctors search for love. The Doctors dark side. Last night, in contrast, we had a story that focused on the people who meet the Doctor. How they battle fear and grief and dyspraxia. The Doctor saves the day and so do they. Instead of impossible girls made special by timelines and upgraded with hacking skills these normal humans help save the day by being...human. Flawed brilliant humans. While a previous Doctor murdered an entire cyber fleet to look cool and prove a point this Doctor states that carrying knives is stupid and takes a single life only after her peaceful solution is rejected. Previous stories seemed to rely on fast-paced, flashy visuals and lots of things that looked cool but never actually made sense once you thought about them. Many arc plots seemed to go on for episode after episode with astounding setups that never got adequately explained. In contrast, this first episode was beautifully paced, things made sense and we saw the importance of the Doctor saving one single person instead of "reality itself". I love this fresh new start and I love this new Doctor. I can't wait to see where she takes us next.

Super minor episode spoilers, though I am probably oblique enough that it doesn't need the tags.

Spoiler:

More than one woman fell to Earth this episode, though the distances involved and the consequences of those falls varied.

Oh, God! The Moffat hot takes continue!

I enjoyed the episode!

Rat Boy: You must not have tuned it to BBC America the whole week they were playing Dr. Who eps. They stated the global simulcast the whole time!

It was enjoyable so I'm more optimistic than I was until now. It's a shame Capaldi was given the material he had as he was brilliant yet most of his run was very meh. JW seems a bit less convincing in her portrayal, perhaps this was on purpose but I'm sure she'll get better as more episodes air.

It's also an excellent jumping-on point for people with zero experience with the franchise who wouldn't know a TARDIS from a Dalek.

God Yorkshire Doctor Who is the best. I mean the jury is still out after only one episode but it was pretty good, good villian, good support cast and it was in YORKSHIRE.

Not far to go to find aliens, mutants or threats to humanity then. Save on the makeup budget as well.

To be clearer:

Spoiler:

Grace fell to her death at the end of the episode.

She was my favorite person in that episode. I'm still salty about it.

Me too, Dee.

Me three, you guys.

Today I learned that Jodie Whittaker played Ffion Foxwell in Black Mirror.

This was not as epic as Tennant's or Smith's first episodes, but I liked it much more than Capaldi's. I have kinda missed an equivalent to Smith's "basically, run!"-speech, but this is a different take on the character, perhaps Whittaker's doctor is a bit less of a show-off than the other doctors before. But hey, I'm happy as long as we don't ever see the doctor playing a guitar or wearing "sonic" sunglasses again. The last one is the modern equivalent of the question marks on the old doctors' outfits.

Three companions... which one were you forgetting?

Can add the boyfriend and I to that list.

The more I think about it, the more irritated I get. I'm sure there would have been complaints if it had happened (and it would have meant changing the frame story!), but I was really hoping for some stray regeneration energy to make everything better during that scene.

On the companions - I know it's not going to happen but

Spoiler:

I hope they all three die in space.

They all seem utterly uninteresting and I really didn't care about their struggles - to prove themselves or overcome their shortcomings. They just lacked character and a lot of screen time was lost on them and the Doctor was almost an afterthought. Three's a crowd.

Still, I'm hoping I am proven wrong.

No idea unless the old guy is one, the cop and bike guy were the only two I thought were companions. Old guy didn't give me a companion vibe.

Having watched it again, I see what people mean, but I don't think there was any way to explain how Ryan and Graham leave to go wandering in space without some significant gymnastics. I guess they could be returned (eventually) to the point in time and space when they left, but that does seem a little 'old-school' Who...and often doesn't work.
