New TV Season 2018-19

Since I found a pretty list of premiere dates I figured I would crank out a new thread for a new year of TV.

What shows are you interested in?

I don't think it is going to be great, but I'm really looking forward to Murphy Brown. I've always loved journalism drams and such, and Murphy Brown was favorite from when I was a kid. Feels good to have her back.

The Rookie will get a watch because Nathan Fillion.

The new entry in the American Horror Story anthology will be a crossover event. It looks like it will be a new season based on the characters and events of season one's Murder House and season 3's Coven. Those are still two of myths favorite seasons, and I think it should make for a great season.

There's nothing new from the networks that I can think of right now that interests me. I'm also down on new network shows (especially genre shows) because they usually cancel the ones I like.

Completed Humans and it was really good. If you like Detroit the game you will like this show. The probably should have dropped the B story since it was kind of silly and they didn't spend enough time on it.

Also done with Deep Space Nine. Good show but could have done without new Dax. She looked like a child. Felt creepy watching her make out with guys that looked like they were more than twice her age. Also didn't make any sense really.

I am looking forward to Murphy Brown, Magnum PI, The Manifest, and The Gifted season 2. Don't really have super high hopes for any of them, but am hoping a couple surprise me.

For a second I thought I was in the "New TV Season for 1987-88" thread.

Now I'm thinking of a show where Murphy Brown retires from journalism to become a Private Investigator with a very large handgun.

I'm looking forward to Jake and the Fatman, China Beach, and season 3 of MacGyver.

Hang on, I already did a 30 Years Later rewatch of the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation last year. Quit messing with my head!

American Horror Story: Apocalypse

I have no idea if this story can hold up, but this pilot could have been a one off exactly as it is. It’s worth checking out.

I’d go in as blind as possible, but just say that they aren’t f*cking around with calling this Apocalypse. It’s a pretty wild ride.

So, I'm not sure if this is a good sign or a terrible sign, but Joan Collins was far and away the highlight of the second episode of AHS: Apocalypse.

Spoiler:

They also killed her off at the end, dammit!

Spoiler:

Rubber suit guy is back!

We just finished up the recent current season of Elementary, and now are really excited for next season.

Spoiler:

Due to events in the finale, Sherlock and Joan are in now living in London and consulting with Scotland Yard. I think it will infuse some new life into the series. It was a pretty great reveal. And yes, he resides at 221B Baker Street.

I feel like it has been a really strong series in the genius/special ability consultant to the police genre, but after six seasons, a change was in order. Didn’t see it coming.

Still watching Fear the Walking Dead. One of those shows I think is terrible but I still like watching it even with all the dumb dumb moments.

Magnum, P.I.

Not as bad as I thought it would be given the MacGyver reboot, but then again that's still on the air, isn't it? Anyway, all four of the leads are enjoyable, and at the very least you'll want to start hoarding for a Hawaiian vacation.

MacGyver's actually been more enjoyable as it's gone on, IMO, including the ways they've had some original series actors in guest roles. A lot of it's still objectively silly, of course.

I think the new MacGyver is dumb but I like it.

Manifest:

Ugh...not really feeling this one after the pilot. It seems to me like it's pulling from at least two TV shows from over a decade ago (LOST and Heroes) but I don't think the ingredients they're trying to mix is blending as well as they think it does.

Growing up as a PK, I've had to watch some really, really bad christian themed movies and shows. I'm getting that same vibe from Manifest. More subdued and not as blatant and bad as Messengers, but that's what I get from it. I think I'll pass.

The Good Place starts back up tonight.

I started a thread for AHS: Apocalypse. After the third episode, I'm all-in. It's far from perfect, but I'm enjoying t he gothic end-of-times camp, and Ryan Murphy has delivered some fantastic scenes and scares. I thin the mash-up of Murder House and coven is better than what I imagines it would be.

This article on Kathy Bates and her role is a decent look if you are interested. It spoils the first two episodes, but not too much. If you are on the fence, it doesn't ruin what makes the episodes so much fun.

Non-spoilery excerpt below.

Variety: ‘American Horror Story’ Star Kathy Bates Talks ‘Tribal Warfare’ Theme of ‘Apocalypse’

Ryan Murphy basically saved my (Kathy Bates) life. When I was sick with cancer years ago and I got a job working with him, he turned my whole life around, and that’s why I want to hang with him. And that’s on a personal level, and on a professional level, he’s the man with the big stick these days — and he comes up with great characters, and [the] key is he loves women: he loves older women, younger women, and to find parts for older women, I can’t say enough about that. That’s why I’m there. It’s a home where I can continue to grow and evolve as an actor. … When my show “Disjointed” was canceled, he got in touch with me and said, “Come back.” The reason I came back was because of Ryan Murphy and because he’s given me so many opportunities to play so many characters I never would have dreamed of playing. When he invited me to come back for this season I was thrilled. … Ryan tells stories that are always more than just the story he’s telling, that’s the best way I can say it.

I thought it was a series finale (and would have been one of the better ones I've seen).

Yeah, I liked the way it didn't seem to take itself too seriously. I'll give it more watches.

The Cool Kids was awesome. I wasn't sure from the commercials, but my wife and I were in stitches.

Murphy Brown was a bit disappointing to me.

Yeah, Murphy Brown was really really rough. I don’t know if it’s the traditional sitcom style, or the writing, or acting but the whole episode felt like a bad stage play.

Also, reliving the past few years may have hit a nerve because all of the “jokes” fell into the “hey, remember that horrible thing that happened?” category.

New season of survivor was interesting. Looks like they got one of their more serious injuries from a boat ride in a bad storm. Something surreal about seeing the film crew around the guy while he is suffering on his back with tears in his eyes.

On a different note it looks like they went for some big personalities. Will they be able to navigate the 20 somethings cookie cutters.

I don’t know how much of the original crew is involved, but it felt EXTREMELY formulaic and 1990’s.
It also bummed me out a bit seeing the main lead from Limitless as Murphy’s son, it just reminded me of how good that show was.

These statements summed up my thoughts regarding Murphy Brown much better than what my mind could come up with.

We caught the first episode of The Good Place for this season. Man, that show is still firing on all cylinders. Funny as hell (pun intended).

I haven't watched Murphy brown yet, as I forgot to set my DVR for it. I was looking forward to it, because I tend to like TV and film about journalism, and I really liked Murphy Brown back in the day. A modern look at where they are now seemed interesting.

But once the promos started airing, it was pretty clear this was not going to go well. I have not seen a single promo that made me even crack a smile. So, my hopes were already pretty low.

And, yeah, The Good Place season premiere was on point. Man, that show is consistently excellent.

Magnum, P.I.

I have a hankering for sushi.

Manifest

It got better, but I wonder if I'm going to stick with it.

Completed Castle Rock and didn't really care for it. There were things I liked about each episode but in the end I found it rather dull.

"It's nice to hear someone say 'Eleanor, this is all happening because of you' who isn't a small claims court judge."

I can't decide which is bringing down the experience more -- not being able to binge three episodes at a time, or the ads I must endure by watching this on Hulu. (It's really messing with what I've internalized as the *proper* rhythm of these episodes.)

Re: The Brainy Bunch

Spoiler:

How is Jason not dead after letting Australian spiders bite him over and over?

Or does that mean that this is the Judge's version of "The Good Place", not actual Earth?
