Pack it Up - Pile of Shame October-December 2018

We made it through another year. For those of you new to the Pile of Shame threads, October-December is one three month long endeavor. With the fall release schedule in full swing and lots of triple-A games coming out, it can be difficult to make time for older games.

Now, without further ado, the 2018 Year End Pile of Shame

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month 2018 pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Picks of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

Well I got nothing done in Sept from the pile. But I did buy, beat, and Platinum Spider Man. So at least that won't end up in this thread.

I'll be back to pick something soon.

Managed my one goal last month, so that was nice.

For this period I'm going
* Knights of the Old Republic (multi)
* Warhammer 40k Space Marine (multi)

Carrying over Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 (PC) from September, and Among the Sleep (PC/multi) from ...February or so.

Adding Jade Empire (XBox/multi) for the CRPG club.

Two games for me:

  • Dragon Quest VII (multi)
  • Golf Story (Switch)

I have ambitious plans for the next 3 months:

  • Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)
  • Pushmo (3DS)
  • Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS3, PS4)
  • Kingdom Hearts re:Chain of Memories (PS3, PS4)
  • Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days HD remastered Cinematica (PS3, PS4)
  • Dragon Quest VII (Multi)
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)

Maybe also Divinity: Original Sin, though I suspect with everything else I’ll actually finish it in the new year.

Several of these are in progress already, so it’s less daunting than it looks (though still daunting).

I think I will go with these games..

Rise of the Tomb Raider (Steam/Multi) (almost done with this one so I expect to see credits roll by the end of the week)
Fran Bow (Steam/Multi) (checking off at least one horror game for October and finishing the last of the games that I was gifted during the 2017 steam winter sale)
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (PS4/Multi) (trying to catch up on the series)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4/Multi) (eager to continue the series. but saving the fourth installment for last since I want to end my journey on a more silly/campy entry. hopefully.)
Banjo Tooie (X360/Multi) (also started this one but haven't finished it)

The modest goal of Tales from the Borderlands episodes 2 through 5 (multi) please.

I'll be starting DQ VII very soon but I doubt I'll finish in 2018.

I'm being ambitious here, of that I am very much aware. Nevertheless, I'm near the end of a couple of these, well into the thick of others, and a handful in the very beginning of. Fun!

Divinity: Original Sin (multi) - In the latter end of the game.
Kingdom Hearts HD (multi) - About halfway, perhaps.
Oxenfree (multi) - Just about done.
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (multi) - On the latter end of the mid-game.
Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know! (multi) - Honestly, no idea. Perhaps a little over halfway through the titular dungeon, but that's not necessarily indicative of how much I have left before I put this one in the ground.
Okami HD (multi) - Going to start again from scratch.
Darksiders II (multi) - began it a couple of years back or so; gonna pick up where I left off.
Resident Evil HD (multi) - Not sure if I should start over, but the save seems to indicate some progress, though not much at that.
Resident Evil 4 (multi) - I know exactly where I am in this one. About a fifth of the way through.
Dead Space 2 (multi) - A fresh start here. Never played this one before.

Let the games begin!

Pack it up?... I’ll try...
I’ll carry over Purrfect Date (PC) and Banner Saga 2 (Multi).
I’ll probably add more but I’ll figure that out later.

I’m carrying over all my games from last month.

I did manage to complete Altered Beast on the 360. Still lots of stupid fun.

I've always heard about these threads but never thought to join. Well, now I have one:
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I was gifted the game for Christmas last year, finally started it about a month ago, but haven't gotten very far. I know it's a good game and I like what I've seen so far, I just haven't been decisive enough to just play it.

Omg finally, I finished PurrFect Date. It was so bad, I can’t believe I got through it.

Starting out with some easy goalposts for this quarter:

Dragon Quest IX (DS)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

You're either a saint or a masochist. That's awful!

I'm going to throw a couple more small ones on the pile. Frozen Synapse (PC) and Orwell (PC).

Rise of the Tomb Raider (Steam/Multi) is done!

That was quick, a nice tight 9 hours. Space Marine done, the Orks and Chaos overthrown. (spoilers!!)

Gonna declare Space Marine as well. I want it off my PC after 2.5 years of "going to pick it up again soon".

I have finished Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest! And I do not recommend it.

My daughter and I completed Disney’s Brave on the 360. Not too bad for a free game.

Here’s my list - it’s over 3 months so hopefully I can pull it off:

Mass Effect 2 Extended Edition - Multi
Banner Saga 1 - Multi
Banner Saga 2 - Multi
Warhammer Total War 2 - PC
Skyrim Switch Edition
Assassin’s Creed Origins - Multi
Xcom 2 - Multi
Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle - Switch

Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 is finally done.
"Classic" should not be part of this game's re-release title. It's competent and interesting, but death comes far, far too quickly and I sometimes felt like I was playing the equivalent of an instagib multiplayer shooter. It really left me just wanting to play the (in my memory) far superior Aliens vs Predator 2 by Monolith.

It boggles the mind that this initially had no ability to save during a mission. Even with 3 save slots per mission it was an incredibly frustrating experience where I was sometimes reloading dozens of times per level. It doesn't help that, in addition to the ludicrously fast alien enemies, the objectives are not always clear. A flippable switch can easily be missed, for example.

It should be noted that, for 1999, this game was no doubt impressive, with three different playable characters with their own campaigns, abilities (cloaking, sticking to walls and ceilings, etc), weapons and various vision modes. The graphics are quite good for the time and the sound effect spot on. The speed is in a way impressive, but it also makes the game more difficult than it needs to be, especially in tight corridors. At times - mostly as a marine - I was actually a bit scared, in a good way.

I had heard that AvP shone in multiplayer, but I missed that boat by two decades, so I'll just have to be satisfied with my happy memories of a few LAN games of AvP 2.

I have finished Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest! And I do not recommend it.

I have also finished Stretchmo! And I also do not recommend it.

Seriously, there was something funky going on with Intelligent Systems in 2015. Fire Emblem Awakening and Pushmo/Crashmo were great. Their 2015 sequels were really bad.

I finished Pushmo! And immediately unlocked the first of what looks like 54 “bonus” puzzles. The credits have rolled, but the game is a great thing for my commute, so I might see it through to the end.

Let me clarify, it was 360 Arcade port of the original arcade game. It was not the gawd awful version new version of Altered Beast they put out on 360.

Rise of the Tomb Raider has had better luck getting its hooks in at the second attempt. Really enjoying it so put me down to finish it soon please. Ta

Edit. When I say soon I mean in the next couple months

I've been playing Assassin's Creed Origins on easy and enjoying it. About 6 hours in.

I've cancelled PS+ for the first time ever. Tales from the Borderlands was a PS+ title, so I'll have to stop playing on PS4.

Pretty sure I have it via Twitch Prime so I can still play it, just have to play the first couple episodes again. Might not be for a little while, am thinking later in the year when not quite so fresh in the head. Stays on the "Pack it Up..." list.

And now I have finished The Alliance Alive, which I really enjoyed! Now I need to figure out what to commit to for the rest of the year.
