NCAA College Football 2018-19: Official Thread

Dawgs played one of their worst games in the last two years and still won by 14 on the road. I'll take it but I don't like the feeling of having to still pay attention to the game in the fourth quarter.

Beat the hell outta Bama!

What was that?

For the first time this year, Bama didn't beat the spread, didn't score 50, and didn't complete every pass on third down! HANG THE BANNER!

I feel so very sorry for you.

Nothing matters, since bama is going to thrash everyone. They were scary without a QB.

They are no longer without a QB.

I quit football season. What a f*cking embarrassment.

Not quite as embarrassing as Virginia Tech losing to a school that didn't field a team until 2009 (and was winless this season).

Edit: It's even worse than I thought. Not only did the Hokies fall straight out of the AP rankings all the way from No. 13, they kicked a starting junior DE off the team. No official reason; Twitter suggests something (a fight?) happened in the locker room after the game.

Been a while since Syracuse was anywhere near the Top 25, so I will happily take our appearance in the "Others receiving votes" section. I love the trajectory Dino appears to have this team on.

That said, Clemson is literally going to try to kill us next week.

Yes, but you guys have beaten them recently. I will be a big Syracuse fan this year after the ass whipping you laid on my Noles. I really like Dungey, and Babers is just a good guy.

Cal is doing its best SEC football impersonation. Strong D, limited Offense and moves into the top 25 doing nothing on the BYE week.

Early look at Week 5, and there's a lot to like.

UNC-Miami on Thursday night could be entertaining.

Saturday early: Syracuse-Clemson (because Syracuse is the second- or third-best team in the ACC right now); West Virginia-Texas Tech (unless you like tackling; then skip)

Saturday late afternoon: Tennessee-Georgia is the CBS SEC game (could be fun for a quarter or two)

Saturday night: ** Ohio State-Penn State at Stanford-Notre Dame at 7:30 ** BYU-Washington at 8:30 if both those game stink (and they won't); I'm kinda interested in Virginia Tech-Duke (7 p.m.) mostly to see if the Hokies will collapse again

Saturday late: Oregon-Cal at 10:30, and knock me over with a feather but it looks like Carl is right and Cal is ranked.

You forgot Louisville v Florida State, battle for the ACC cellar.

Ugh.

How quickly times change, huh?

I wonder if anyone will actually score in this game.

Uh, actually I didn't.

Speaking of basements, you'll have lots of company down there this season. The ACC is *bad.*

OTOH, the ACC might end up having to send a 3-win team to a bowl game. Could be the Noles or the Cards!

Hey, we’re part way there! Wooooo

We won't score 63 again that's for damn sure.

Nope. And my two-year wait for revenge is going to last a few more years... even if we somehow win tomorrow.

Ags are going for their seventh consecutive win vs Arkansas with the noon ET game on ESPN!

And let's go, Louisville!

And Clemson loses their only QB. Against Syracuse again.

Wild.

It sure was. My Aggie friends and I were debating cheering for our rare, non-SEC quality loss vs cheering for the underdog. I said our ranking doesn't really matter this year, cheer for the underdog if you like.

Ags struggled but led the whole way. Seven in a row! Sorry, piggies!

Louisville scored in the first half finally. Wow.

SO. FREAKING. CLOSE. AUUUUUUUUUGH.

That said, if I'm genuinely disappointed about barely losing to Clemson on the road, Syracuse has made some serious gains recently. Based on the first 5 games, if this team doesn't get to at least 6 wins, I'm going to be exceptionally annoyed.

1st down in FG range, up 3, under 2 minutes... Petrino calls a pass. Intercepted.

OMFG.

Naturally FSU scores. Louisville throws an INT. Game over.

Dumbest sh*t I've ever seen. Should be fired for cause immediately.

I'm starting to sense a trend here fed...

Also... they lost.

Rough beat Stele, I thought the game was over. Sorry man.

Abu5217 wrote:

It was. He's a moron. Run the ball 3 times. Either 1st down, game over, or kick FG and FSU has 30 sec and no time outs to score TD, practically impossible.

I'm so done with this idiot.

No trend! This is the only week I'm cheering for Louisville.

Go Irish! Stanford has been a monkey on Bryan Kelly’s back. This was a good 21-point win!!

Penn State was up 26-14 with seven and a half minutes left in regulation, and gakked it. No es bueno.

Northwestern came out on fire against Michigan, but Michigan came back from down 0-17 to win 20-17. It speaks to my pretty good feeling about this year's Michigan team that even at that point where they were down 0-17 in the 2nd, I still felt pretty good about their chances of winning the game.

On the topic of Michigan, here's some interesting data on how often B1G defenses draw holding penalties from the opposing offense over the past 4 seasons of B1G league play:

+----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Team | Holding Calls Accepted (B1G Play) | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Indiana | 27 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Purdue | 27 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Maryland | 24 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Minnesota | 23 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Rutgers | 22 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Wisconsin | 21 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Iowa | 20 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Michigan State | 20 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | OSU | 20 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Penn State | 20 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Illinois | 19 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Nebraska | 18 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Northwestern | 18 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+ | Michigan | 11 | +----------------+-----------------------------------+

Bit of a drop-off there at the end. And just in case you're thinking that, well, Michigan has a pretty solid defense, maybe they're just on the field for less overall plays than the other teams:

+----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Team | Accepted Holds Per 100 Plays Defended | Total holds Per 100 Plays Defended | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Indiana | 1.24 | 1.38 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Minnesota | 1.21 | 1.26 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Wisconsin | 1.17 | 1.40 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Maryland | 1.14 | 1.14 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Michigan State | 1.12 | 1.23 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Purdue | 1.12 | 1.32 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | OSU | 1.10 | 1.27 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Iowa | .99 | 1.09 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Illinois | .94 | 1.14 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Penn State | .93 | 1.17 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Nebraska | .83 | .94 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Rutgers | .81 | .87 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Northwestern | .76 | .97 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+ | Michigan | .58 | .76 | +----------------+---------------------------------------+------------------------------------+

On the other hand, here's a hold that was called against Michigan's offense on Saturday that negated a 20-yard run late in the game: https://twitter.com/ByAZuniga/status...

I draw no conclusions from any of this. But it's interesting!

Hey, Nebraska! How did that "game that we could win next week" turn out for ya?

Huh. A 42-28 home loss. To Purdue.

Me all weekend:

An early look at Week 6:

Noon: Red River Shootout (and both teams are ranked, Fox)

3:30 p.m.: LSU-Florida (CBS) and Florida State-Miami (ABC)

Prime time: Auburn-Miss State (ESPN2) and Washington-UCLA (Fox) at 7:30 and Notre Dame-Virginia Tech at 8 (ABC).

A couple of rivalry games early followed by a bunch of conference games that are mildly interesting. Meh. I think I'm turned off by the fact that Miss State has those damn cowbells and VT is starting a second-string QB who was 0-and-10 at Kansas before coming to Blacksburg.

Fed, you'll have to explain to me why A&M is unranked but is playing a Kentucky team that is ranked. Are the two schools playing basketball instead?

Because Kentucky is better than A&M?

(I know you were making a joke)

In the rivalry game, we shall witness FSU getting absolutely thrashed by um, which will give the 'canes their first home win vs the Noles since 2004.
