Let's talk anime.

Is that My Hero Academia movie a filler thing? I'm guessing it is.

I think it’s one of the novels or side stories? Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Finally got to watch that. Awesome!

It's a tie-in with a movie coming out soon.

If you've got to do that kind of filler/product placement, that was pretty awesome.

Continuing on with Naruto the Next Generation. I'm around 30 or so episodes behind. I'm currently on this story arc that seems to be retelling of a Nartuo arc that had the ice kid and giant sword guy. That one had issue with a bridge, this one has a issue with a bridge. That one had a ice kid, this one has a ice kid. I'm betting ice kid's partner is going to have a big sword just like in the Naruto version.

Attack on Titans is just nuts. They had a couple of torture scenes but one was crazy.

Spoiler:

They had the guy eating his own poop. They also dressed him like a girl.

Giant ape man is still a mystery but we learn a lot about the inner workings of the government and how titans are made.

Spoiler:

Big question is if they had the power to control titans why didn't they use that power to stop the titans. They can't use that power now since Eren has it but before that could got rid of the titans.

Oh I guess giant ape man is only half a mystery since we know where he came from just not what he currently wants.

I hope you're in the mood for more Sword Art Online, because last night they revealed the new season will be four cours long, i.e. an entire year's worth of episodes.

I'm slowly working my way through Darling in the Franxx, many episodes behind, and I am getting frustrated.

I mean, let's cut to the chase: do these kids know what sex is or not?

Spoiler:

The part of the show I found compelling was the tragedy of the protagonists basically being raised as cannon fodder so cut off from normal human interactions that they literally don't know what kissing is, and how they would eventually come to realize that they've been victimized in a very real way and figure out how to come to terms with it. Basically I wanted The Blue Lagoon meets Evangelion.

But then I get multiple episodes of fan-servicey hijinks where the boys accidentally walk in on the girls in the bath and such? I feel like this show really suffers from an inconsistent tone, like they won't commit to revealing any details of the premise or worldbuilding that are too "heavy" because they wouldn't be able to fall back on cheap comic relief afterward.

Also, at this point Zero Two is still basically just a one-dimensional yandere and I'm bored with her. Ichigo is clearly Best Girl but I'm fully expecting them to eventually kill off her and/or her bespectacled partner so Hiro and Menace Pixie Dream Girl can live happily ever after.

Something to read after DinF.

Also, is a new season of Log Horizon ever coming out?

Or Grimgar for that matter?

Also, this.

This weeks My Hero Academia was very good with the Deku vs Kacchan battle. Looks like they bumped up the animation for the fight. Also liked Eraser's look outside of his costume.

Cross posting with anime thread.

If you all haven't been keeping up, RoosterTeeth is also getting some HUGE names for their upcoming Mech show Gen:Lock. It's...3D anime I suppose but they have Michael B Jordan, David Tennant, Maisie Williams, and Dakota Fanning. With the improved quality of RWBY's art style I'm really interest to see what they do with this. The creator/writer/director is Gray Haddock who's been the head of the RT Animation department for a little while now is also on their anime podcast "Fan Service" and you can tell he LOVES mech anime so this certainly seems to be his tribute to the genre. They brought in Evan Narcisse to help iron out the scripting so it has some pretty good potential.

So Island reached its final episode. While it wasn't a great series, it threw in some neat twists towards the end and reached a surprisingly satisfying and happy ending. Not sure the last few episodes redeem the of the rest of the series, which did earnestly strove to hit some emotional cords, but I'm certainly glad I saw it through to the end.

One more ep of Planet With is left and it was my favorite anime this season.

Glad to hear you like it, seems to be underrated.

Just watched SAO:Ordinal Scale. The last fight was pretty incredible!

That’s what I’ve heard. I am going to probably watch it this week since the new season is starting soon.

I'm working through SAO:(title) the one where he's in GGO. It's been OK, but I'm really struggling to stay interested. Everything is just moving really slowly.

The best part of season II is at the end unfortunately. IMO, of course. Meaning the last story arc.

In more SAO 2 news the last episode had a painfully long trope-tacular scene where a guy goes all bonkers "I own you" mentality on a female character. I'm not a big fan of playing into that trope, but they did at least paint that guy in a terrible light. The whole scene just really highlighted the core problem of the series, everything moves at a glacial pace. I don't know if I'm going to make it through the whole season.

And here I thought the core problems with SAO were:

  • Kirito is a super special Gary Stu who gets bullsh*t special powers in every game. Also, every female character is in love with him.
  • The way the show sexualizes all of its female characters, often in creepy and/or inappropriate ways.
  • Season 2. Just all of it.

I watched all of the first two seasons of SAO because... well in retrospect I don't really know why.

I started the one where he's in Gun Gale but gave up when it became obvious he was just going to wtfpwn everything with his sword again. But I was curious enough to look up the ending to find out the resolution of the central mystery. All I can say is that if I had actually watched the whole thing to be presented with that resolution I would have felt downright insulted.

That is the start of season 2.

Man, SAO is pretty dumb, and yet I watched both seasons, Ordinal Scale, and even skimmed some of the light novels. At this point, I'm mostly morbidly curious about how dumb it's going to get. I did not watch that most recent GGO side-story thing, however. I heard it was pointless even by SAO standards.

They're starting another new SAO series next season, covering the "Alicization" arc from the books. I read some of these books; they're dumb. TL;DR: Kirito is placed in a situation where he needs to sword things. Luckily, he can sword really good. Also a lot of other dumb, usually sword-related things happen.

I might be there to hatewatch it, but I can feel my IQ ticking down with each moment I pay attention to it.

Changing the subject to shows I actually like, I recently started watching The Vision of Escaflowne. It's a shojou/fantasy/mecha series from 1996 that I'd vaguely heard of before, but I decided to check it out while revisiting Re:Creators, and discovering that Escaflowne was one of the major series that one of the shows-within-the-show was drawing from.

The show is a big ol' mishmash of genres, but it mostly all seems to work. The animation is also surprisingly good in the context of the era. It's no Cowboy Bebop or anything (which was just a couple years later), but I'm consistently surprised by the level of detail they choose to show sometimes.

Anyway, it's over on Crunchyroll if you want to check it out.

Let's not leave out the NTR rape scene! Which, admittedly, was the turning point where the Kirito side of the story actually got somewhat interesting... A shame the Asuna side ends so quickly.

The entire franchise would be 1000% better if it was from Asuna's point of view.

At this point, the separate Gun Gale Online show is preferable to SAO.

Yuuup. That Mother’s Rosario side story really drove that point home. It was the one part of the show that was actually pretty decent.

The upcoming anime I'm looking forward to the most is One Punch Man season 2.

It's also on Funimation (and VRV), I think with the new dub of the 1080p version adapted from Blu-Ray.

In a similar vein, I'm looking forward to Mob Psycho 100 season 2. (If you're not familiar with it, it's based on the online manga from the same writer who did One Punch Man.)
