Rocket League Catch All

Sometimes the guy on kickoff just needs a little extra boost to get the job done.

Last night I decided to start by playing my placement games for doubles. In my very first placement game my partner quits playing about 30 seconds in after I scored a goal to put us up 1-0. I proceed to dominate the game 1v2 and win 8-2. Not sure what level these 2 were at, maybe they were only silver, but it felt good anyway.

Nice.
Had a terrible start in my placement matches yesterday, lost 3 or 4 games in total. At least it still placed me back in pretty much where I left last season.

I played a lot of ranked sports modes last night. Had lots of fun learning how to play them since I haven’t played most of them much since they came out. Fun way to burn through early rank reward wins without any stress because I don’t care what my rank is in these modes. I should be on playing more tonight if anyone wants to join.

Got the white troublemakers from rocket pass last night.

I have found it really helpful to play with the GWJ guys on Friday/Saturday nights. I think playing against higher level players forces me to try and play faster and at a higher level too and seems to pay off when I then go into normal ranked modes. On the flip side, the drop in talent for my rando teammates in ranked is noticeable and I have to adjust to not assuming my teammate will rotate properly or be able to make the save/clear on defense.

As long as you don’t get frustrated it helps a lot to play with higher ranked players. I had some of my largest improvement back in season 3 when I joined a private tournament community and got to play against grand champs regularly in private matches. So sad that community shut down.

Yeah going against ukick, panda, and the others on Saturdays made me lot better.

Sometimes I would go play ranked at midnight on Sat after leaving bottle rockets (and sobering up), and have really great winning streaks because the players at my rank were not nearly as good as y'all.

couple of shots I enjoyed

Good basic advice in this one- no mention of dribbles, aerials, ceiling shots or flip resets.

Sony just backed down on preventing PS4/Xbone crossplay in Fortnite. Hoping to hear a similar announcement from Psyonix soon.

It's good advice but I wish they would throw in some lower skill level examples on the videos. While they aren't specifically mentioning them, there are plenty of super skilled aerials going on in that video for shots, saves, and clears. I'd be lucky to connect with many of those, let alone point the ball in a 5 degree window. Those might be simple moves for him but they certainly aren't for me

ha, this is basically the entirety of my game. i have zero mechanical skills but float around between Plat 2 - Dia 1 just following these concepts.

only thing else i would add that wasn't specifically mentioned (but was kind of implied) is to start thinking about where your teammates (and opponents) are at all times. so much will fall into place if you start thinking this way. for instance i can't tell you how many saves i have (in upper platinum even) from backing off a ball that should be mine up in the opp corner into a defensive position because i can see the other 2 over commit, etc.

It was a night of bicycle kicks.

It wasn’t that far in the past where if you were in that position you would be rushing out of zone but these days you are ready for the pass. It’s a big change in thinking that is helping your game a lot.

I want to see that second goal from Red’s perspective. It’s not clear from that clip but I think he had to react very fast to get up for the aerial.

Becksar got a 206 KPH (128 MPH) goal in snow day today. I've never seen a goal that fast before.

i had this shot lined up so well that when the defender teleported me he scored it instead

here it is panda

I just built a built a new pc recently, it has a i7 8700k and 1080ti. I thought I’d whack the frame rate cap up to 144 and all ultra settings to see how rocket league would feel.

Mostly, it’s all fine, and the frame rate fluctuates around 143-145, it’s not constantly at 144. There’s been one or two occasions I’ve lost 5 or 10 frame too. Is all this normal for rocket league? Or games in general? Or should it easily be able to hold 144? I have no gysnc/vysnc enabled, but was unsure if it needed it being such a powerful card. I’m honestly clueless when it come so to things like graphics!

I know that frame rate tanks between menus, etc, but this is all in game.

Lots of things can effect your frame rate. Windows maybe scheduled a task that took a bit more CPU then normal, or the game wanted to read from the HDD to get a new resource it didn't preload. I have played games capped at 60 FPS that have occasional drops. I wouldn't be worried about it.

I have heard a lot of people state that there are more frame rate fluctuations after the lastest big patch than ever before. Microstutters, etc.

Ah yes, microstutters, this must obviously be the explanation to why I suck so much at this game.

Heh, I am a firm believer that the little network icons they introduced a few months back is the primary source of excuses in Rocket League. I've won and lost matches at 20 ping or 110 ping, with orange icons blinking and without. I basically ignore them.. I guarantee you when two people go up the same corner chasing the ball leaving the net totally exposed, its not because the Ping or their FPS that made them do it.

I played for the first time in a while last weekend. For the most part the game played great, but one goal did get scored while I was mid field hitting the ball into the offensive zone and a network spike occurred. Next thing I am back in the net driving into the post.

Oh I get lag spikes happen and they suck, but I've also seen the orange network icon light up and I'm playing fine. Lag spikes effect play... little orange icons do not.

It was fun in that game the other night where Dork and I had latency issues but you didn't. It was exciting finding out that we actually hit the ball!

What kills me is when I forget to switch to "game mode" on my TV. Prior to using it it I was semi oblivious to input lag but the difference really night and day on my Vizio. I can tell right away when I start a game because I'm feeling like I'm playing in molasses. I think it goes down from 100+ms to around 25ms. 100ms input lag is way worse than 100ms ping to me.

How can I get in on a bit of this GWJ RL play?

It depends, if you're lagging as bad as I lag sometimes (300-900), you may try to reverse and turn and rocket league interpret your keystrokes as going forward and turn FULL SPEED since it lost connection and it predicted your intention. That would explain many of my losses without doubt!

GWJ Discord server has a Rocket League voice channel:
https://discord.gg/wvJmets

When there is a GWJ specific group together they are usually on there. Lots of smaller GWJ groups use other servers or private voice when playing but the bigger gatherings end up on the main one even if it is multiple separate groups doing ranked. You can always add some of us directly on Steam as well.

those moments that keep you playing where everything you try works and you think I CAN play this game. Then the next game you suck again.

Achieved Rocket Pass level 70 on Saturday afternoon playing casual with pubs. I got in with the same pair of players on my team the last 2 games. They were teamed up, but still spent the games uncoordinated. But my absolute favorite was having one of them drift straight into me in goal as a shot was coming and I was just going up, then proceeding to Wow and WAS me because I just managed to clip the save instead of blocking it after they THREW ME ACROSS THE ENTIRE F*CKING GOAL.

That is what convinced me to take a weekend off of RL.
