NFL 2018 Week 2

Yikes. Luck got benched for the Hail Mary.

Is that benched or more like "we don't want you to ruin your arm again on one throw"?

Pretty sure the latter, Brissett only took the one snap.

Niners already terrified it's the ACL.

Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant high-fiving each other on the way to the end zone is my new favourite thing.

Which means there's a 90% chance that's what it is. Trainers can spot that pretty well before the MRI. It means the knee isn't stable.

Welp, guess the Garoppolo/McKinnon offense Kyle Shanahan envisioned is in full blown hiatus until 2019.

That sucks.

This game will make for a most interesting conversation around the Chiefs this week. It was fun listening to the constant chatter that no one could come up with a a way to stop the Chiefs offense, but it wasn't realistic. Now, after a 3 point second half, there will be some things to talk about.

Tweet of the week:

2 catches for 10 yards isn’t going to cut it for CMC. If he’s going to be a slot receiver the Panthers can depend on, he has to show up week to week.

The joke is that McCaffrey had 28 carries for 184 yards.

Unrelated: Heads up on this feel-good story: Carolina DE Efe Obada -- the first player to go straight to the NFL via Europe and not college -- had an interception and a crushing sack in his first game. Should have had a forced fumble, too, but Andy Dalton just barely managed to move his hand forward like he was throwing a pass.

This game is why, while I’m excited to watch the Chiefs, I have a hard time with those predicting a Super Bowl for the Chiefs. That defense is bad, and this is the third game in a row where teams have left significant points on the field.

Also Andy Reid

So now it's pretty much guaranteed that Toto will perform "Africa" at either the Thanksgiving Parade or Rose Parade, right?

Looks like Gronk’s refusal to play for the Lions might have ticked off some players in Detroit.

This might be the NFL parity year where every team finishes between 7-9 and 9-7.

We already have 2 ties.

Kerryon Johnson, 16 carries, 101 yds

The Detroit streak ends!

A bad Giants team looked good in the first half against the Texans... then looked bad in the second half. This is going to be a long and joyless season.

To paraphrase the English football chant, "Are they the Jets in disguise?"

There are three things that I am enjoying this season:

The Kansas City Chiefs offense.
Watching the NE Patriots struggle.
The resurgence of Adrian Peterson.

Given that the League is becoming every more pass-focused, I genuinely wonder whether AP will be the last conventional running back we'll see in the Hall of Fame. Everyone talks about Saquon Barkley's promise as a back, but I watched him lining up all over the field yesterday; adding as much value as a receiver as a running back.

3 games. 46 rushes for 216 yards. 21 receptions for 137 yards.
AP averaged 23 receptions per season over his career...

Of course, the sample size is small with Barkley. But it's something I'll watch as the seasons roll by.

EDIT: And obviously Frank Gore is going to get in too. But I can't see McCoy or Lynch - the only other current players over 10,000 yards getting in.

I don't think Gore will get in because he lacks the window dressing that someone like Jerome Bettis:

Super Bowl champion (XL)
6× Pro Bowl (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2004)
2× First-team All-Pro (1993, 1996)
Second-team All-Pro (1997)
Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year (2001)
NFL Comeback Player of the Year (1996)
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year (1993)

Here's Gore:

5× Pro Bowl (2006, 2009, 2011–2013)
Second-team All-Pro (2006)
Art Rooney Award (2016)

Monday update from Jene Bramel:

JIMMY GAROPPOLO | LEFT ACL TEAR | OUT FOR SEASON

Garoppolo suffered a non-contact knee injury on a scrambling run. Unfortunately, the mechanism of injury was classic for an ACL tear and Garoppolo will have an MRI to confirm the inevitable tomorrow. Assuming no additional meniscus or ligament damage, Garoppolo should be ready for training camp next summer.

This is an insanely light response from him which tells me there's pretty much no hope that he's anything other than done for the year. Sorry...

True. And Gore has been one of the least flashy RBs. Consistently very good, but - arguably - never outstanding. He's never been over 2,000 rushing yards in a season for example, though he had nine over 1,000 yards.

I suspect he'll be grudgingly given a bust in Canton after a couple of attempts. He's fourth in the overall rushing stats after all. Everyone above him, and a lot of the players below him are already in. Curtis Martin is number 5.

Wondering why the Bills defense went from horrible to pretty good overnight? Sean McDermott took playcalling duties away from Leslie Frazier last week and began calling more aggressive plays. Frazier was calling plays again this week, but the Bills kept the aggressive streak and it worked. (It also works really well against Kirk Cousins. He's so bad under pressure and yesterday was what I expected to see from the Vikings most of the season.)

The Bills had a sneaky good defense last year, so maybe they can be that again. QB play still remains an issue as I don't expect Josh Allen to complete almost 70% of his passes all the time. His legs might help him though. That's something I discounted a bit on Allen since he's so inaccurate, but he isn't afraid to throw his body around a la Cam Newton.

After a big game last week, Amari Cooper reminds everyone why he isn't a top-shelf receiver yet

Happened to Andy Dalton late in Sunday's game against Carolina.

He launched a throw halfway to the moon, but his receiver stopped running, and Carolina's Donte Jackson fielded the thing like it was a punt.

In related news, AJ Green says he'll be fine. I hated to see him get hurt, but I also hate to see Carolina lose.

To no surprise, Garoppolo's MRI showed an ACL tear. No other damage though, apparently, so probably the best case as far as recovery outlook.

Someone check Conte's pulse; I think he just got murdered.

He might retire at half time.

Ouch.

Looks like the clock struck midnight and fitztragic is back.
