The Playstation Vita Catch-All

So far Stardew Valley on the Vita is a surprisingly good port. It's going to be really tempting to start packing my Vita around since it's considerably more portable than the Switch. It looks really nice on that OLED display as well.

Did they change menus and inventory so you're no longer using a mouse pointer? I really disliked that from the Switch port.

Is there a cross save?

No. Unfortunately.

My understanding is there isn’t.

I've been checking in all day. No sign of the Vita version here.

Bit of a internet rummage...

Ah well, soon and perfect for a dentist trip Vita debut on Thursday.

Stardew cavity?

Cavity Rush is pretty good too!

Oh man. This joke always gets a little long in the tooth. Time to play some Dragon’s Crown.

He, he and he...

That's better.

Bear with me on this one...

It's a shame I won't be able to remote play in the waiting room, otherwise I'd get stuck into some Witcher 3, because you know Geralt is... Polish.

Thank you.

Edit. I'm definitely not taking XCOM Enemy Unknown. I don't want my visit to end with an extraction.

Oh come on

It IS! I set 'em up, you knock 'em down.

Come on, folks I was hoping for at least a full page of this hooey by now.

I was expecting a full page of this hooey, and then for someone to turn up saying, “Man, lots of excitement in the Vita thread”; only to be disappointed.

The slow death of GWJ

Now that's a bridge too far.

So when are we getting a dislike button again?

It's now up for Europe. Installed. Happy.

I've actually dug my Vita out of storage, and it's recharging as we speak!

I finally got to try Stardew Valley on Vita last night, man does it look so crisp, I don't know if its the fact that its on the small screen or the vita's screen is that much nicer than my tv, but it looks awesome. controls seem to be fine, such a bummer that there is no cross save. Really jarring starting from scratch again. Ended up starting up a river farm.

They said it couldn't be done. XCOM on Vita, beaten. In the end, the sh*tiness of the port is a bit overblown but it is probably the worst way to play the game. I imagine it would be comparable to playing the iPad version on the oldest generation iPad that can boot the game. Load times were rough but not so much worse than on PS3. Frame rate often chugs, and the textures look like garbage on close ups. Anyway, glad to finally check this one off my backlog. Still had a blast despite the downsides of the port.

Manufacture and shipment of the Vita will shut down in Japan next year. That was the last place it was available.

RIP. I will treasure my original and beautiful white slim always.

The article I saw on the subject said that the executive that made the announcement emphasized that there were no current plans for a follow-up to the Vita. I hope Sony really pauses to analyze the system’s failure and their strategy before they try to make another portable. The Switch has shown me just how viable the Vita could have been if it were better executed.

I'll miss you!

The Switch isn't perfect but with it's 3rd party line up and solid specs, I don't really see a need for another handheld at the moment.

I might end up trying to grab a working original vita as a backup, since I legitimately like my white original.

For kicks, I went back and read through the first chunk of this thread. It's a trip through the wayback machine, for sure, although it's interesting to see how some of those unanswered questions from 2011 ended up being answered. I think we have a pretty good feel now for not only how well the Vita would fare but also the 3DS and the looming boogeyman of smart phone gaming.

Phones seem to have largely stabilized into a parallel market. The handheld market is smaller but not at all unsustainable. The 3D on the 3DS was ultimately irrelevant to its success, and the 3G on the Vita amounted to nothing. Backtouch was as weird and pointless as people feared it would be.

It's weird how early the issues that plagued the Vita came up. Memory cards were immediately unpopular and never came down in price. The home console on the go games largely failed to materialize. Sony's first-party support was almost always an afterthought.

I'm glad I owned one and put some time into it. I didn't click with it like I know some of you did, but that's okay. I'll be surprised if Sony or anyone other than Nintendo takes another swing at the handheld market again for awhile, which is a shame. I think everyone benefits from the competition.

I think the only way Sony could ever do another portable is if they did a PS4 Portable which could straight up play all your PS4 game library at 720p and function like a PS4. I don't think the hardware would be there for a few years at which point it would be too late.

I charged up the Vita after months in the drawer to check on the purchased pile for jrpg club and see how Darkest Dungeon played on the small screen just in case it comes out on top in the crpg voting (fingers crossed).

Still have a whopping pile of quality games on there, PS cross-buy, cheap deals and PS+ has seen to that.

This big old pile does highlight two crappy features...

Firstly, as you say memory card limitations (16gb for me).

Also the horrible way I have to scan through all purchased games to download something directly to the handheld... A list that not only contains Vita games, but every single PS3 and PS4 digital game ever owned, including doubling up on the cross-buy (Kula world anyone?) games, and not listed in any kind of sensible order. Sorry, rants - I was browsing for a couple things to download yesterday and as always frustrating. Would it have been a massive task for Sony to fix? I'm sure this has been moaned about multiple times over the last 7 years! Trip down memory lane for you.

Despite all it's failings still love it though!

But also I hate it.

But also I love it.

But I do hate it.

Love it though.

Dusts Vita off. Plays for a month. Puts back in drawer. Dust gathers.

Rinse and repeat.

My slim is still kicking, though the only time I use it with any regularity is when we go on trips or visit relatives- I like my Switch but the ridiculously poor battery life has seriously deterred me from taking it out of the house.
After this news broke I found myself on Amazon contemplating picking up a spare Vita for the future.

The battery life of the Vita is something to love for sure.

Dust gathers in sleep mode, dust it off and wake it up, still juice - quality.

Battery is great. I bought a 64gb card which was more than my phone at the time but paid through the nose for it of course. I recommend using a web browser and the add on that allows you to search and filter your psn library according to criteria you specify (such as by platform, ps+ titles). Can't remember the name of the top of my head but I can check it later if you're interested.
