Doctor Who *Spoilers Abound! We've lost Containment*

So last year's completed version of Shada (called "The Lost Episode") aired on BBC America the other day. If you didn't like animated Power of the Daleks, then this will be rather grating as it jumps back and forth with the live footage. I enjoyed it and really loved the little twist at the end.

I finally got to watch it. I still didn't like the animation, but I dealt with it better here because the majority of it was live-action. Aside from that, I enjoyed it a lot.

Also a Brooklyn 99 fan, going from the clip. Cool cool cool.

They've shown very little but nothing so far has got me excited about the new Who, unlike the first Capaldi teasers. That said, I'm still very interested in what the new showrunner chooses to do with the series and how far, if at all, is he willing to push the storytelling and characters.

The shining point of the RTD era was the bunch of episodes Moffat wrote.

This is 100% accurate.

The old Moffat episodes were excellent yes. Don't know what happened when he took over. Case in point. My son and me watched The impossible astronaut/Day of the moon yesterday. I remembered how much I enjoyed them the first time around. With hindsight I just get annoyed by the set up of so many plot points that never get a satisfactory explanation or just get handwaved in future episodes. It's like he wanted lots of stuff that looked cool and seemed very meaningful at the time but ultimately couldn't be bothered to deliver.

My wife and I have been going through Torchwood for the first time and just finished the third season. Loved it and it reminded me why I loved the Russell T 10th Doctor run.

Looks like broadcast day is moving to Sunday, first episode October 7th.

(I'm really going to regret the 24-hour delay caused by watching this streaming.)

I am trying to catch up but I just don't like Peter Capaldi's Doctor. I find him the antithesis of what I love about the show and the character. I admit I am only Flatline so does he change?

I am think I might just skip his run but I know many people love it.

He does have one of the best companions ever though. Bill Potts is amazing.

He gets some wonderful episodes, but he also gets some clunkers. He's fantastic all the way through though.

I honestly think he suffered from bad director syndrome.

He does change a bit over the run. He starts off very non-human with Clara having to coach him on reading emotions and things like that (with flash cards!), but he eventually gets it. They did tend to experiment with him a lot, like the season of two-parters or Hell Bent, so it may still not be to your liking.
I would say watch Thin Ice if you want to see him at his most Doctor-ish, but it's also a long journey to get his character there.

Epic, intergalactic and explosive new Doctor Who trailer drops!
* I do think they rely on the sonic screwdriver too often. It just does whatever is needed - opens doors, disables enemies, gives readouts of air/chemicals, etc.

I was in your shoes. I really held off catching up on Series 8 and 9 because I didn't like Capaldi's introduction (or his take on the Doctor).

I went back a couple months ago and powered through both series and I have to admit Capaldi's not as bad as I originally thought.

The more I think about it what got me was the tone shift. We've basically had, what, seven series where the Doctor's been more of a manic, but well-liked young chap and then he was swapped to a scowling older man. It's like there were seven years of Tom Baker and then we went back to William Hartnell.

Two things ruined me on Capaldi's run, I think:

  • Clara, Clara, Clara, Clara, Clara, Clara, Clara, Clara. We had already had three or four saccharine goodbyes for Clara, and I was worn out on it. Capaldi having to do the same thing was exhausting.
  • Fans. Discussion of every episode turned into who did and didn't like Stephan Moffat and for what reasons. Eventually, every conversation simply started there, with battle lines already drawn and complaints already sharpened.

I really hope a new showrunner and a new Doctor will get past all that.

I still say that The Doctor Falls is one of the best episodes in the series. This may have to do with the fact that Missy (by far the best incarnation of the Master) and Bill Potts (by far one of the best companions) really make that episode.

Yeah, I remember more than a few conversations that devolved into that and I almost responded and then I thought "Wait, I've already said this. Probably a couple of times. I'm just not gonna post."

Ah but now we'll just talk about how it would have been done differently by Moffat.

I am just hoping they increase the ...joy of the Doctor. My favorite episodes are when he/she is filled with excitement and interest. When finding some new monster he/she isn't scared instead it is excitement to find something new.

I couldn't help but just smile throughout that entire video. Just adorable.

FIRST LOOK: Episode 1 | The Woman Who Fell To Earth | Doctor Who

I am...much excite!

It would have been nice to know in advance that there was going to be a global simulcast starting in an hour and 15 minutes.

Oh. Em. Gee. I LOVED IT!

Jodie Whittaker is A-mazing. And the new theme is a TOTAL retro throwback to original Who.

Going to be a 2-hour special edition of the premiere at 8PM EST on BBC America. I didn't realize it was going to be this afternoon, but the DVR got it while I was at the store.

God Yorkshire Doctor Who is the best. I mean the jury is still out after only one episode but it was pretty good, good villian, good support cast and it was in YORKSHIRE.

Loved this. Love the new Doctor. More of this please.
