Nobody wants to go up against the new Tomb Raider game, eh? Cowards, the lot of you. It takes an army of small developers to do the work that big developers won’t do.

Old School Musical sings and dances its way onto PC this week. It’s a chiptunes rhythm game, and it apparently has a story mode that tells the tale of how the bugs got into all of the games that I used to play as a kid. Also, there are chickens, which in my experience is one of the most surefire ways to identify the best video games.

COLINA Legacy is a horror game that my daughter has been looking forward to playing since we saw it at PAX East two years ago. You’re alone in a house with a life-sized version of one of those poseable mannequins that artists sometimes keep on their desks. I got mine from Ikea for eight dollars, and I can imagine how freaking terrifying that thing would be at full scale stalking me through a dark house.

Obliteracy is a free-to-play game that is calculated to tickle the word-nerd in me. You play as a warrior whose weapon is, literally, words. Sure, it’s just a violent reimagining of Scrabble, but is that so wrong, really?

SCARF is not, as I initially thought, the third game in a trilogy that included Fez and Poncho, but is in fact a pixel-art fashion-battle game. Craft your outfits and take to the catwalks to see whose fashion reigns supreme.

ReCore: Definitive Edition is the full release of a game that Microsoft could have called Early Access and avoided a bunch of bad press. I mention it because it’s not going to be a Microsoft E-Store exclusive, which means people might finally buy it.

My game of the week, however, goes to a game that I’m saluting for sheer audacity. Just a month after Madden hit store shelves, Axis Games is releasing an unlicensed American Football game to PC. In doing my research, I see that it’s the fourth game in the series, which has been going since 2015. I don’t even like football, but I have to doff my cap to anybody who tries to take on EA in this space. Axis Football 2018 gets my surprising pick for game of the week.

It feels like the blurb for all of the Tomb Raider prequels is that Lara will “become the tomb raider she is destined to be”. 3 games in, and I reckon Lara’s pretty tomb raidey by now. This time, Lara is deep in the South American jungle, hunting for Mayan relics, and there’s nothing colonial about that! The key improvements that give the reboot series an edge over the earlier games have been in combat and stealth – something that Lara does better than her spiritual cousin, Nathan Drake. With Deus Ex devs Eidos Montreal at the helm, you know you’re in pretty good hands for an open, multiple-paths-through-obstacles world. One interesting touch is that there are separate difficulty sliders for combat, puzzles and exploration. I also like how Lara can get her Arnie on and use mud to hide herself. Anytime. GOTW.

At first I thought that said "Viny Love," as in the kind of love that Poison Ivy might have for something. Then I realized it was supposed to be sharing a L between "Vinyl" and "Love," and I'll admit, my mind stuck with the superhero bodysuits. I was already waggling eyebrows before I realized we were talking about extended-play records.

Honestly, props for Vinyl Ove for not being about boobs this week. As Lara Croft has become increasingly "realistic" and then increasingly realistic over the years, it seems plenty of smaller developers have stepped forward to provide what some may feel was left behind in Lara's march and baby steps away from ignoble roots.

As for game of the week, I'll let it be the Dickenson poem – I mean Shahow Of The Tomb Raider. I haven't done enough reading to know whether this episode will be better than prior, or how much better if so, but I choose optimism. Felix's point about colonialism is well taken, but the trailer at least indicates that it's made clear to Lara how much of things are caused by her tramping about in other peoples' heritages. Maybe it'll be a Big Trouble In Little Yucatan? I want to believe.

Our digital libertarian paradise in full bloom...

"Hi! I'm Moggy and can't stop buying pre-orders at the last minute"

That's supposed to be the first step, right?

Meanwhile, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is pre-loading...

Like the song says: Something appealing, something appalling, something for everyone! A comedy tonight!

We live in an era where libraries proudly advertise the availability of books that were previously banned. I don’t want to read most of them, but hey, they’re there for people who want them. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

I love the header image so much.

Thanks.

We don't coordinate our picks, but sometimes the team achieves hero-image-synergy like that.

Oy, Frozen Synapse 2 is coming out today! The original was so good, but they're now taking the formula and putting it into an open world, essentially. Very strange direction. Hope it works out for them.
