NFL 2018: Week 1 Thread (Sort of)

Holy shit that's actually true. Not a single week 1 win in 14 years. Even with a 10-6 2007 season.

When they cut away from the view of Clay Matthews flying in my brain said he's not going to f*cking stop is he.

Chiefs’ Andy Reid: Anthony Sherman is a sausage with hands

Sherman capped his rare scoring opportunity with an emphatic spike because, as he summed it up, “I don’t really have any moves. I’ve only got the spike.”

Well if I only got to see one game today, I guess that was a good one.

I lost it when I saw that.

Rodgers can rightfully say he put paid to that contract.

The radio keeps talking about how the Browns snapped their 17 game losing streak (pause) with a tie. Over and over again. It's funny.

That seven hour Dolphins-Titans game is the longest FOX have gone without cancelling a comedy.

It's a new era!

0-0-1. Our best start since 2004!

Zangief?

Am I the only one who thinks he looks like Derek from The Good Place?

3 point game now. Trubisky needs to stop being boring.

How the f*ck do you go 8-of-11 and get only 26 yards?

Maybe he liked what he saw of Foles to Agholor on Thursday.

Or of Joe Flacco the past couple of seasons.

With Mahomes, Hill, and Hunt, along with a horrid defense, the Chiefs will be testing this trend a lot this year.

I'm just gonna say this and otherwise let you enjoy the insanity of your team's offense, but remember that the NFL only has two game tapes of Mahomes. I love the kid and who is coaching him, but he may have flaws/tells that have yet to be identified.

Kendrick Bourne confessed to running the wrong route on the Garoppolo pick six.

Oh gawd, please don't tell me you're going to be a Garoppolo apologist all season??!??

Garoppolo World Tour 2018.

Nah, yesterday was a bad game, the INT that he sailed was awful. But hey, week 1. Roethlisberger threw 3 picks to Cleveland and fumbled 2 more to them, and I wouldn't overreact to that either.

Wow. His eyes are way dilated.

I agree 100%. This is what I was just telling my dad earlier this morning. This is when the real test starts. As excited as I am, I pretty much went into this season thinking 8-8 may be a high bar to clear. Partly because the defense won’t be there to bail him out, but that teams will be exploiting everything they find, making this a learning season, not a championship season.

And regardless of what anyone in the Chiefs organization may say, I think that’s how they are proceeding. It’s why I’m a lot less upset with the state of the Chiefs defense than a lot of fans right now. They focused more on getting Mahomes support now on offense, overpaying Watkins to really be a great #2. The defense didn’t get better by trading Peters, and even releasing Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali. But I don’t think Reid wanted Peters around, and the other two would not have been a factor for next season anyway.

So they trade for Fuller, signed Hitchens, and drafted 100% defense. These moves weren’t to have a playoff caliber defense this season, but to build toward one after a year or two of Mahomes getting experience, both good and bad. It’s not a plan that sells tickets, but it works. Everything I see so far tells me Mahomes is the real deal, but I have no illusions about how far along he really is.

This is about enjoying the process and seeing how it turns out. I wish more fans were capable of that. I dropped out of a Chiefs group on Facebook because of all the whining, including through the game yesterday. Yep, I was worried the defense would blow it. And, yep, the Chargers gave the game away in a lot of ways. But that’s just how every game is going to have to go this season. Score as much as you can, then hold on tight. And in some games, Mahomes is going to look just like bad Brett Favre.

Holy snap, Greg Schiano turned down DC job for the Patriots back in February. How the hell didn't I know this?!?!

Oh boy I remember that one:

IMAGE(https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/7541901/mack.0.gif)

Here's video.

On the gif above, Mack absolutely abused Trai Turner, who had moved from RG to RT to fill in for an injured Darryl Williams. It's true: the fate of the Panthers rests on Darryl Williams' gimpy knees.

Oh yeah, dude snagged that one out of the air like no receiver ever.

I sense a new Twitter account in the making:

#JimmyGFacts

Since this is now my thing, apparently: Jon Gruden claims that Khalil Mack didn't want to play for the Raiders. He forgot to shout "Period!" at the end of that claim.

It's worth noting that Keenan McCardell held out during Gruden's run with the Bucs, and they traded him away too.

So it seems that SD, er... LAC, has a serious attendance problem.

Kinda hard to call this a road game for the Chiefs.

edit: Where in the World is Chargers de San Diego?

You mean LAC right?

(Which I always read as "LA Clippers")

No he means San Diego. Attendance at Qualcomm Stadium is down an average of 57,024 people compared to just 2 years ago.

Yeah. Too old to start calling them LA now.

I have numerous friends from San Diego including a coworker who used to be employed by the San Diego Chargers back in the days of Junior Seau and Ryan Leaf. They all say the same thing. That San Diego is just not a football town. There is way too much other stuff to do and the interests of the population can never support a team. Considering they had been their so long AND considering Los Angeles has had numerous teams in that span, it is really unsurprising that they don't really have a hometown fan base on which to draw.
