Spider-Man Catch-All

I played for awhile last night. Unlocked some towers, grabbed some backpacks but I mostly just found myself swinging through the city trying to learn all of its nuances.

Then I went to sleep and dreamt of Spider-Man. I told him to "Swing me baby, swing me all night long".

Yeah had my first hard crash randomly today during a mission, I've read online about other folks getting the same error. Seems fairly common hopefully gets patched. Really loving the game so far it's been a blast 45% complete so far, I dont want it to end.

Pretty cool - I got a phone call from an NPC during a crime side mission, and it got cut off due to a QTE. About 30 seconds after I finished the mission, Peter called back apologized for cutting off, and the conversation continued.

Speaking of phone calls. Man, this game hits all the little details just right.

Played for several hours and it’s been stable and bug free, save for sometimes getting stuck on something where I don’t want to be.

I’m playing on an original PS4 and I’ve had 4 hard crashes (with no real trigger, two happened in stories, two happen in open world swingin around) and two hard freezes where I had to quit. So I guess YMMV?

Yikes, I guess I’ve just been lucky so far. Hopefully they get it patched soon.

Saw the accessibility options on Twitter. Can turn off QTE, change tap to hold, and some other stuff.

Love it.

Would probably turn off QTEs just because.

I unlocked the

bomb challenges

(minor minor spoiler). I thought I had a good grip on the traversal but I’m not good at these. Havent gotten more than 1 token on any of these.

Also, this game is amazing.

The web bomb is...well..the bomb

Seriously though, best gadget ever!

I'm not usually a photo mode kind of person but...well, look at my Twitter feed now.

Is it probable this will remain a PS4 exclusive?

I love love love the backpack collectibles and the sheer nerdiness of them. I just found

a picture a kid had drawn of me catching his lost balloon.

Fantastic.

Probably, since every other Spider-Man focused game from the early 2000s on were PS exclusives. I imagine it's tied to Sony owning the feature film rights to the character.

Woohoo! I wasn't expecting my copy to arrive until Wednesday, but it was sitting on my porch today. I guess I know what I'm playing today.

Yes. It's published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. I wouldn't expect it to come to any other platforms.

It has that unlock towers Ubisoft feel about it but the traversal is so damn good & the combat is awesome once you get into the flow of it & unlock upgrades, that I don't care.

It would help if the find the missing person, car accidents & some of the other police report stuff weren't carbon copies of each other but minor gripe in an extremely enjoyable game. The voice actor for Spiderman/Peter Parker is superb.

Does anyone know if there's a way to climb down a building from the edge or do you have to jump off & attach on? Some of the bags are down a little from the top of certain buildings & it would be a helpful thing to do.

I done a side quest for the bird watcher in Central Park that was simple but enjoyable, had a couple of layers to it.

For anything on a wall I'll jump off, turn around and hold L2 which slows down time, then you can aim at it and web to it with R2. Works for walls, roofs, etc within about 30ft

Super tip, thanks! I've barely used the slowdown time at all actually.

The web swinging mechanics in this game are an absolute delight. I’ve been doing a ton of collectible hunting just because it’s so much fun travelling between them.

Once you really get into the groove of the combat, it is an absolute delight! I'm at the point now where everything is starting to click and I am able to vary my attacks and really use the environment, and hot damn does it give that "Spiderman" feeling as much as the Arkham series did for Batman. Incredible fluid, vertical and just elegant, whereas Batman tended to be more brutal (but still great!)

So there's an easter egg we all probably missed, but that's not the worst part.

This. It may be that Sony yielding on the movie rights means they make more money on games, etc. I doubt they give that up.

I put in two decent stints this weekend, and I've found the game to be a mixed bag. It took me a while to get into traversal and combat, but I now really enjoy them. I struggled with combat in particular, because I was doing it wrong. I was trying to batter my way through encounters. As Wayfarer says, you have to use the environment in order to avoid being overwhelmed.

The swinging is, of course, absolutely fantastic. But I do wonder whether the open world at street level suffers because of it. At no point do I ever feel like i'm in a real living city, as opposed to a stage set designed to showcase the swinging and web-slinging. There seem to be very few buildings you can go in to (and surprisingly this appears to includes Peter Parker's own apartment). Also, Spiderman feels a touch clumsy to me when he's on the ground and not in combat.

I haven't done enough main missions to comment on them. Like many people, I enjoyed the swinging and slinging so much that I've spent a lot of my time hunting backpacks and taking photos of landmarks. However, the 'ambient' side missions are already annoying me. I find them intrusive. (And I think this links back to my point about the stage set. The city is extraordinarily crime ridden... exactly where I happen to be.)

The other minor gripes relate to logic/consistency. The player is introduced to Spiderman as fully formed, well established crime fighter... but - apparently - I don't know my way around the city and have to unlock radio towers in order to fill in the map.

Also, Spiderman is strong enough to lift hundreds of kilos of steel and concrete, but it takes him several strikes to take down a basic mugger?! That makes sense of Batman, who is highly trained but still human, but makes no sense at all for Spiderman.

It's the fastest selling game of the year.

Detroit I think the comics have pointed out the inconsistency with Spider-mans strength as him holding back from using his true strength in fear of killing people. Your mileage may vary on that being a reasonable excuse but it works for me. I actually love that when you knock someone off a building it appears they are stuck with a web mine and stuck to the side of the building on the way down really sells spiderman as a non lethal character.

The not knowing your way around the map isnt the reason you unlock radio towers, you are establishing police communication in the area as the NYPD servers have been hacked and as a side effect of clearing the signal spiderman can now access the system. I never felt like he was lost navigating around.

As to crime yeah there is alot early on but it's really limited to 5 crimes per district per faction so once you clear the area there is no more crime. I found the ramp of crime with the factions introduced pretty good actually. It builds to a really nice point in Act 3 I'll say no more other then the city goes through some very drastic changes as the game progresses.

Combat was pretty hard at first but as you unlock more it's really great and rewards patient play rather then button mashing. I'm in Act 3 now and the game really becomes alot more challenging so its forced me to learn the mechanics.

Challenges were seemingly impossible to get above bronze on st first but I started using web zipping and launching rather the swinging and it sped up my times considerably. Drones are still very hard to get the gold on but everything else is possible first try usually now.

I love the fact that when you are on the phone and you start a fight, or walk int oa research station or open your map or do anything that interrupts the dialog, there's a really smooth "I'm sorry about that, where were we" that integrates the dialog back in. It's a little thing, but it makes a huge difference

I'm pretty sure i'm still in act 1,

Spoiler:

I just did the big crane/helicopter set piece that was in all the e3 footage

so i just recently got access to the web bomb. my favorite on the street strategy for the big fights with regular thugs is to open with a web bomb, then swing in and set off the the web storm suit power.

Edit: also, I absolutely adore JJJ as an alex jones style radio

@Rave,

I was making precisely that rationalisation with myself as I was playing. Indeed, the need for superheros to pull their punches was a plot point in the climactic battle of Superman vs The Amazing Spiderman.

And you're spot on about patience in combat. I died a lot on the introductory mission to clear the Kingpin's troops from the building site. I kept trying to play it like Batman Arkham Asylum, and that really doesn't work. Once I started prioritising threats, isolating individuals or small groups, and striking and then - frankly - running away, I was much more successful.

I've not unlocked any of the challenges yet. I'm still in the foothills of the game.

A villain in game even mentions that he knows spiderman has been pulling punches so it's more then just an after thought on Insomniacs part. They have been pretty good with lore stuff. Makes the Easter eggs that much more rewarding.

It's not so much that they yielded the rights is that they agreed to allow Disney to utilize the character in Marvel Studios films and they could borrow characters from those movies for Spider-Man movies. Considering all the name checking and easter eggs from other Marvel characters in this game, I wonder if a similar deal happened here and this game is part of a future Marvel Video Game Universe that'll share continuity with the forthcoming Avengers game.

There is a specific comment when you take the landmark picture of Avengers tower about how "The avengers are never in town, last i heard they were somewhere on the west coast"

Here's all the Marvel easter eggs not from Spider-Man I've found so far:

Spoiler:

Jessica Jones' Alias Investigations
Josie's Bar and Fogwell's Gym from Daredevil
Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum
The aforementioned Avengers Tower
The Wakandan embassy (Peter wonders if T'Challa was bitten by a radioactive panther)
Otto Octavius' bio page refers to Captain America and Iron Man by name
A backpack contains a business card for the law firm of Nelson and Murdoch, the latter Spidey calls "that blind attorney"

Oddly enough, I didn't find any Luke Cage references despite Harlem being a part of the game map.
