Dog Days of the PIle - Pile of Shame September 2018

School is back, traffic is worse and it's still stupid hot. I think I need to play some more games. Perhaps something that's not new and shiny. I give myself about 50/50 odds that I succeed.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month 2018 pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Picks of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

Tales from the Borderlands

"Tales from the Borderlands is a five part episodic game series from the creators of The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series. Set on the unforgiving world of Pandora after the events seen in Borderlands 2, this is a story full of Borderlands’ trademark humor, following two adventurers on their quest for greatness.

You’ll play as Rhys, a Hyperion ‘suit’ with dreams of being the next Handsome Jack, and Fiona, a Pandoran con artist looking to score her biggest ever swindle. Thrown together as unwilling partners in an adventure to recover cash they both think is theirs, their journey will take you on a wild ride where gangsters, bandit lords, and Vault Hunters are just some of the obstacles you’ll encounter, in this new take on the award-winning universe created by Gearbox Software." I'm nearly finished Battletech, so once I'm done there in the next couple of days I'm down for Saints Row 2 (multi)

I'm hoping I can figure out how to get the Gentlemen of the Row mod to change my onscreen prompts to the 360 buttons.

I'm going to try to finish Shin Megami Tensei IV for Nintendo 3DS. I'm about halfway done now.

I got side-tracked by replaying old Tomb Raider games in August, but this month I'm beating Yakuza 2 (multi) for sure!

First off, I'm carrying over Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4/Multi) and then immediately crossing it off. Decided to get through the last third of the game during this long holiday weekend. I may be in the minority here but I vastly preffered the original to this game. Then I want to carry over Rise of the Tomb Raider (Steam/Multi). And I'll add Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U) and Child of Light (PS4/Multi).

I'm carrying over Disney Pixar Brave: The Videogame on 360 (depends if my daughter wants to play and/or watch me play this) and Golf Story on Switch. I'm also adding LEGO Marvel's Avengers and Korgan on the Xbox One.

I'm a couple dozen hours into Bloodborne. Really enjoying it between all times I'm not throwing the controller in frustration. About the same into Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I'd be surprised if I finished with either one by the end of the month. But there's a chance.

Since I finished the main story in Monster Hunter World on September 1, I need only carry one title out of all the ones I declared for August. I'll do that, and add a couple:

Kingdom Hearts HD (multi) - this is carried over from August.
Divinity Original Sin (multi)
Oxenfree (multi)

That should keep me plenty busy.

I’m going to start the month off with Purrfect Date (PC) and The Banner Saga 2 (Multi).

Please put me down for:

Pillars of Eternity 1
Pillars of Eternity 2
Torchlight 2
Battletech

I'm still playing Pillars of Eternity (multi) and Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS), which I declared but didn't finish last month. I will finish them this month, both because we're coming down to crunch time in the CRPG and JRPG clubs, but also because I'm very close.

SMT IV: As I understand it, I essentially have to beat the boss in my current dungeon, and clear one more dungeon. There's also an optional boss if I'm feeling brave.

Pillars: I could head into the final fight at any time, and am just cleaning up quests now. I might get through all the base game content but definitely won't clear the expansions.

I probably won't finish anything else this month, but will be playing a combination of others, including Hollow Knight (multi), Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii), God of War (PS4), Human Resource Machine (PC), and Mini Metro (PC).

And I'll be digging into Dragon Quest XI (PS4), though that game's new and doesn't count.

Pillars 1 is down!

Congratulations!

Shin Megami Tensei IV is down!

Apparently, I'm honeycut1 now

In today's adventures of "When Copy/Paste Goes Wrong" we'll follow Hemi on his journey to wrangle this list into some sort of order.

Korgan has been completed. It was a nice 2-3 hours in a not too bad Diablo knock off. Now this means I need to buy Diablo 3 since it's on sale.

Child of Light (PS4/Multi) is done. Now to see if I can cross off 3 games this month and beat Rise of the Tomb Raider. It should be doable as long as I don't get too caught in the side content..

Ahh, Child of Light was a great game. My wife and I made that into a multi-player game, with her taking the lead and me helping out with Igniculus.

Oh, I didn't know there was co-op. That sounds like fun

It was! I'm not sure if it was really a feature, but because Igniculus was controlled by the trackpad / mouse, and Aurora and her party members by keyboard / controller, we were able to split it up.

Finally caught up on my August pledges, as I finished Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS3) a few nights ago.

Wow....old things sure do seem to frequently collapse in spectacular fashion when Nathan Drake shows up.

Uncharted 3 is of course very pretty as well as fun, with some fun writing, but it simultaneously doesn't always make sense. Near the end of the game, for example, once Nathan and Sully have mowed down half an entire army of mercenaries as well as several armored vehicles, suddenly 6 (or so) at once pose unfavorable odds that must be overcome by other means??
Also, I will never understand why the primary antagonists don't just shoot Nathan dead during the half dozen chances they have while aiming guns directly at him. Nonsensical.

At any rate, I'm glad to finally have the PS3 trinity done with. It'll probably be a while before I jump into the PS4 titles, as I suspect I'd burn out on this style of game if I played them back to back.

Gonna work on Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 (PC) for the rest of the month. No clue if I'll finish in time, but I'll try.

For Sept. Please put me down for...

Tales from the Borderlands (multi)
Episode 1. Completed.
Episode 2. In progress.
Episode 3. Fingers crossed.

You do know there are five chapters, right?

I am counting each episode as a win!

More in Oct!

It's pretty good so far, I'd say 3 audible chuckles Ep. 1.

And Saints Row 2 goes down. With a tiny bit of very simple modding it definitely holds up. The Gentlemen of the Row helps stability, still not perfect, and fixes button prompts.

The only game I finished this month is a game I didn't declare. Oooboy, I'm in trouble.

I had forgotten to update here, but Pillars of Eternity is down (as of 9/18/18).

Oh, right, I forgot too, but I've completed Shin Megami Tensei IV.
