2018 - 12 Month Pile Program

Hmm...

Spoiler:

I forget exactly what triggers the spirits in the community center. Maybe you have to go back, after the first cut-scene? Or find something first? In any event it happens very early

August progress (possibly final) report.

Beaten:

Minit (PS4)
Dust: An Elysian Tale (PS4
ABZU (PS4)
Steven Universe: Attack the Light (Android)
Ni No Kuni II (PS4)
Hard Corps: Uprising (PS3)
Last Day of June (PS4)

Added:

Divinity Original Sin II (PS4)
Death's Gambit (PS4)
Dead Cells (PS4)
Assassin's Creed Origins (PS4)
Guacamelee2 (PS4)
Bulb Boy (PS4)

Progress made in:
Kingdom Hearts HD (have to pick up the pace)
Monster Hunter World (due to various situations, was unable to play as much of it with focus on the main game as I intended; may nevertheless move to the "Beaten" field in the remaining two days of August)

All in all, a rather busy month for gaming. Much fun was had.

Where did all the time go?

Finished
WRC 4 (Vita)
Mother Russia Bleeds (PC)
Old Mans Journey (PS4)

Added
Atelier Lydie & Suelle (PS4)
Far Cry Primal (PS4)
Dust Force (Vita)
Old Mans Journey (PS4)
Oceanhorn (Vita)

Playing
Assassin's Creed Origins (PS4)
Shining Resonance Refrain (PS4)
Ride 2 (PS4)
Severed (Vita)

I ended up buying way more than I should have, besides Atelier game, all those 5-6 dollar digital purchases end up adding up quickly. I almost ended up purchasing Shadow of War until I realized I barelly played the first one. Time wise I honestly don't know where the hell it went, I felt like it was a better month in terms of mental fatique, but still barely had any time for actual gaming. The only real progress I managed to do is in Severed on the Vita as it proved a decent game to play in 10-20 min chunks. September looking more promising with kids going back to school, which should give me some free time in the evening.

Edit: didn't think this would happen but with 4 minutes to spare finished Old Mans Journey

August Report

And I've pre-ordered DQ XI, so that'll be added in September

148IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif ) / 60IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Goals for August:
Finish SMT IV - I am so very close
Finish Pillars of Eternity - ditto
Maybe finish DKC Returns
Make space for God of War and Dragon Quest XI!

This month, as I have a couple big, high-hour-count games to finish, I probably will abandon my strategy of chipping away at my backlog by finishing short indie games.

Hey, there’s still tomorrow!
I’m nooooot reeeeeaaaadyyyyyyyyyyy!

As I expected this month has been World of Warcraft and nothing else.

Time for my August report.

Backloggery is at 32. I'm pretty happy with myself, progress is actually better than I expected. Still need to move things along, but progress is progress!

August report:

Added:
Nothing!

Finished:
Nothing!

Played:
- Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4) - man, this game is fantastic! Should finish the main game in the next week and will move right on to Frozen Wilds
- Rainbow Skies (Vita)

I resisted the urge to buy some of the new digital games like Guacamelee 2 since I won't be playing them anytime soon which felt good. I see some good reviews for Dragon Quest XI but that will wait for a significant price drop since the only DQ game that I have ever finished was IX. No planned purchases for the rest of 2018 (well, maybe Tomb Raider if there is a crazy holiday deal on it) but I'm sure that I will cave on a PSN sale or Gamefly used sale at some point.

August 2018

July Completed
Gorogoa

August Played
Overwatch
Slime Rancher
Gorogoa

August game time
Somewhere between 20-25 hours maybe?

August Purchases
Battletech
Gorogoa
Ironclad Tactics
Opus Magnum
Star Trader Frontiers
Slime Rancher

Plan for September
Estimated available game time - Up to 40hrs
Overwatch, that easy time sink, stopped any real pile progress this month so maybe put that aside as I've had my fill of it really. After a good July, I made a few too many purchases this month, time to cut back spending again. Gorogoa and Slime Rancher purchases though... so, so worth it! Play more Slime Rancher, pick up Battletech properly and a few others off of the pile. Oh and play through Tales of the Borderlands!

Finally...

Game of the Month - January Battle Chef Brigade
Game of the Month - February Monster Hunter World
Game of the Month - March What Remains of Edith Finch
Game of the Month - April Slay the Spire
Game of the Month - May Into the Breach
Game of the Month - June Moonlighter
Game of the Month - July No Man's Sky NEXT

Game of the Month - August Slime Rancher
(Hon. mention for Gorogoa)

I think I've reached the point where the idea of getting new games is really unappealing hence my lack of new additions this month. Unfortunately, that hasn't translated to a ton of pile progress. Hoping next month that I'll be able to finally finish Ni No Kuni 2 and maybe cross off a bunch of shorter games.

Is anyone using Playnite? I heard about it in another thread, it's supposed to provide a "unified interface for all your games libraries".

Eleima wrote:

First I'm hearing of it, but it looks promising! I'll definitely give it a spin. And now I have a new thread to stalk!

I just started using Playnite and it works pretty well. My big concern was that it would have problems loading my Steam categories, but it did that just fine. I'm still working out how it handles uninstalled games; it looks like you can sync it with Steam and Origin accounts to find those games, but I haven't tested that well. I still run Steam on startup anyway so I can look at the sales and updates/patches.

I finished Tales of Berseria this month, which means my PS4 backlog is now clear. I've got a couple small indie games I'm going to play next, then I'm not sure what I'll focus on in October. I'll likely get one more medium sized game finished off the backlog before Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out, then I don't expect to make much more progress for the rest of the year. That still makes over a dozen games cleared off the pile this year, and I feel pretty good about that.

Get ready for a report that's way too long!

October Report

Overview:
Well, I was making such good progress, but after a recent haul of new PS4 games, my backlog is now at negative numbers for the year – even though I have finished 10! On the plus side, I financed all of my new games and a replacement 3DS with games that I sold off to a local used game store, and still am carrying a balance that I can use going forward. Selling all of those games was a big step for me, as I have kept almost every single game and console I’ve ever owned, throughout my life. This year, I’m trying to be realistic about how owning more stuff is not bringing my joy and is contributing to clutter, and paring down some of these games was a decent start at getting my collection in order.

Added [9 games]:
Dragon Quest XI (PS4) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif )
The Last Guardian (PS4) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS4) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD ReMIX (PS4). I’m counting all of the games separately in my backlog, so there are six:

  • Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS4) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif )
  • Kingdom Hearts re:Chain of Memories (PS4) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Goals for October / the rest of the year
The Backloggery has helped keep me focused this year, as has finding my way to this community. But sometimes, as you can see this month, I have a tendency to play a lot of things and never get very far in them – or to get 2/3 of the way through and then abandon them. With the end of the year coming up I want to focus on playing a few games and making progress in those, rather than the scattershot approach I’ve followed this month. And, I’ve really enjoyed the social aspects of the CRPG Club and JRPG Club, and want to continue there. To that end, here’s what I’d like to accomplish by the end of the year:

The big stuff:
Divinity: Original Sin IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) – CRPG Club
Kingdom Hearts Final Mix IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) – JRPG Club
Kingdom Hearts re:Chain of Memories IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) – JRPG Club
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days HD Remastered Cinematics IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/completed.gif) – JRPG Club [To round out KH 1.5, as this one is just the cinematics)
Maybe start playing the JRPG Club’s next selection, although I probably will hold off until after KH

The “play when my wife’s not at home” game:
God of War (even if not in front of the TV, she finds the screaming and violent sounds distracting).

The commute games:
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/completed.gif) – I am so close to the end, though a bit stuck on one optional challenge.
Pushmo IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) – a relaxing game for my commute

The short indie games:
Ellipsis IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
Girls Like Robots (PC) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) – a clever puzzler, and surprise treat!

I think this is a lot, but potentially achievable. For October, I’ll try to finish Zelda, one of the indies, and get within striking distance of finishing KH Final Mix.

Hi-ho, everyone. It's been a long time since I checked in here.

It's been an interesting year for the pile, so far. At the beginning of the year, I estimated that I would finish about 30 games in a year; so far, with three months to go, I'm sitting at 27 finished. I'd guess that I'll probably end up with around 35 games finished by the end of December.

I had wanted to try to have about 1/3 of the games I finished be new purchases and about 2/3 be games from the pile. To date, it's closer to 1/2 from each.

I feel like on some level I've finally cracked the code on finishing long-form games like RPGs. I've finished between seven and nine of them this year, depending on what counts, and it's been really satisfying. What seems to work for me is playing two or three of them at a time and just rotating between them with each major plot beat.

Concurrently, my interest in a lot of other games and genres has really flagged. I seem to just be tired of glossy AAA games and want to settle in with my handhelds. That's okay!

I've made some missteps over the year with purchases, and I had extraordinarily bad luck with some platforms this year (seemingly every Switch game I bought was a dud until last week). But I'm going to forgive myself those and move on.

I'm very happy with the way this month been going, totally made up for the lack of progress in the summer. I'll post my lists in a few days!

I don't think that I will finish anything in the next couple days so here is my September report:

Added:
Horizon Zero Dawn: Frozen Wilds (PS4)
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2 (Vita)

Finished:
Horizon Zero Dawn: Frozen Wilds (PS4)

Played:
Rainbow Skies (Vita)
Knack 2 (PS4)

I needed something a little different and much shorter after over 100 hours in Horizon Zero Dawn so turned on Knack 2. Playing on normal so it is pretty easy. When I'm too lazy to go to the basement PS4, it's Rainbow Skies. Still, no expected purchases in October based on release lists so continue working on the pile. I have already finished 10 games this year so on a good pace.

Really good month for me, alot of shorter games, but finished couple of long runners too.

Added:
Valkyria Chronicles 4
Donut County

Finished:
Adr1ft
Severed
SUPERHOT
Tacoma
Assassin's Creed Origins
Limbo
Civilization Rev 2 * (vita) (hated the interface, after one match it was enough for me)
Donut County
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
Forward to the Sky

Playing:
Valkyria Chronicles 4
Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermillion
Oceanhorn

Ramblings

Spoiler:

After struggling with making any progress with the pile for the entire summer I needed a bunch of short games to get my motivation back to continue with the 40 hour journeys, this year I also wanted use my PC more for gaming, this month I accomplished that. I got over my anxiety of starting another game and just pressed "Play" on few shorter titles on my PC, Tacoma, Superhot, Forward to the Sky did the trick. Last couple weeks were brutal at work in terms of stress and I needed a brainless game to be able to turn my mind off for a bit, looking around my steam library and Need for Speed did the trick, for an 8 year old game it holds up surprisingly well, I ended up getting gold in all the street racer career before getting tired of it.
Back on ps4 I did the same thing, looked in my library and saw couple games that I been putting off trying out or was close to finishing. Sometime along the way I found the time to power thru the last couple missions in Assassin's Creed Origins.

Looking a month ahead, I should be able to finish up Tomb Raider and Valkyria Chronicles, both I'm really enjoying playing in tandem. I am planning to continue my progress on the Legend of Heroes game couple nights a week, I believe I'm in the back half of the game. I also need to start Dragon Quest VII for the JRPG club.

Stand out games of the month:
Assassin's Creed Origins
Severed
Donut County
Superhot

Finished:
World of Final Fantasy

Played:
Two-Point Hospital
Pathfinder Kingmaker

Bought:
Two-Point Hospital
Pathfinder Kingmaker
Monster Hunter: World

Better than August I guess.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -a fragmentary passage (PS4)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (3DS)

Rise of the Tomb Raider (Steam)
Persona 5 (PS4)
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS4)
The Witness (Steam)
Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
Child of Light (PS4)
Freedom Planet (Steam)

Not a bad month. While Ni no Kuni II wasn't a horrible game, it failed to grab me like the original did. Hence why it took me roughly 6 months to get through. I wanted to beat Rise of the Tomb Raider before the end of the month but I've just been struggling with a bit of anxiety/depression. I've started seeing a new therapist though so I'm working on it.

Coming into October, I want to start some scary games in my backlog but I haven't decided which ones (have Resident Evil remake HD, Amnesia A Machine for Pigs, Outlast, Organ Trail, Alan Wake, Little Nightmares and Franbow..) Then I want to scratch off more of my planned games to play/beat in 2018 which might include Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain, Banjo Tooie and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth before the end of the year. That might be wishful thinking though..

Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, I'm trying to outline some goals for myself.

I'd like to finish:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Torna, the Golden Country
  • Stretchmo
  • Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
  • The Alliance Alive

I'd like to make progress in:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
  • Persona 5
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

I'd like to start:

  • Culdcept Revolt
  • Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
  • Stella Glow
  • Okami

There are only a few games coming out in the next few months or already released that I haven't gotten to yet, so hopefully I don't add too much to my collection in the meantime.

So, September went awfully fast for me. I feel like, even though I had plenty of time, it went so swiftly that I feel like I'm owed a month! I did well in keeping my purchases down, but playing long games also took a toll on my completion rate. Fun was had, nevertheless. Also, puppies. Two. Those are massive time-sinks.

Added:
Timespinner (PC) - this was a game a backed on KickStarter a few years back.
Hollow Knight (PS4) - had been waiting a long time for this to come to PS4.

Beat:
Monster Hunter World (PS4) - the main quest. Clearly, the game is not beaten until, well, one decides it's time to move, which ain't happening anytime soon.

Played/Progressed in:

Divinity: Original Sin - This game is really deep and enjoyable. I'm at the 50+ hour mark, perhaps closer to 60, and think I have a good chunk of game still left. My favorite thing of all? The humor. I came into the game thinking it would be very sober and serious, but found the wonderful surprise of it being quite humorous.

Guacamelee 2 - Needed a little break from this as I ran into a section that requires a lot of coordination and split-second reflexes, along with some planning. Will get back to it soon enough.

Nex Machina - Unlocked the secret, post-game level. It's kicking my ass.

Assassin's Creed Origins - My first AC since... 2? Enjoying it. Not great, but certainly not bad.

Horizon Zero Dawn - I can see myself playing this for a good while.

Foul Play - Interesting. May not hold my attention for much longer, though.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - Still truckin'.

Kingdom Hearts HD - Slowly chipping away at this; it has not aged very well, despite my nostalgia for it.

Hollow Knight - Have only played a handful of hours. It's already kicked my butt a teeny, tiny bit. Good stuff.

Bulb Boy - I recall seeing this in KickStarter a few years ago but missed the deadline to back it. Played the
intro parts and I dig it, so far.

Dead Cells - this game's perfect for small bursts. There's so few games where meaningful progress can be made in under an hour; this title is filling that hole in my life right now.

Here's my September report.

Added:
None!!

Finished:

  • Quarantine Circular (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)

  • Purrfect Date (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - So bad, and yet I keep playing.
  • The Banner Saga 2 (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)

Remaining games: 54 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (52 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 36 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 8 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 37 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 7
Est. remaining hours: 511 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (494 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 368 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 159 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 7 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 286 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 248

Backloggery is at 33. This is one of my worst months in recent memory. I only finished one game. There are a host of reasons, like Purrfect Date being not that great, and Banner Saga 2 not grabbing me. Mostly I'm just bone tired, and when that happens, I tend to gravitate towards games I can just ease into like a beloved pair of old jeans.

Very pleased with zero purchases in September. I am going to break that run by finding a copy of Dragon Quest VII to play along with the JRPG club and kick that off soon as able. It'll be my first DQ game, aside from Builders so will see if it's for me. I'm enjoying Hatsune Miku as my pick up and play through a few tracks when have 15 minutes spare here and there, I reckon that'll stay in rotation for a little longer. Maybe some sedate RTS action by digging into Northgard properly. Continue through Tales from the Borderlands, hopefully have the series done within the month!

A mixed bag of a month marked by decisions made out of stress. Frustrated with myself for acquiring several more likely long-term piledwellers this month, though I did make slow steady progress on some longer games. It seems I'm back to pecking away at multiple 50+ hour games at a time while neglecting the shorter stuff in my pile that I want to get to, looking to shift that balance some this month.

Your September sounds like my July/August! Reassess, strategize, and conquer... Or something!

Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, I'm trying to outline some goals for myself.

I'd like to finish:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Torna, the Golden Country
  • Stretchmo
  • Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
  • The Alliance Alive

Not even two weeks into October and I've finished two of these. That said, I'm looking at the nine unfinished games I have listed on Backloggery and am trying to get a more realistic idea of what I can get to and what I'm interested in getting to.

Likely to finish:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Torna, the Golden Country
  • The Alliance Alive

Probably finish any two of:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
  • Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
  • Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl

Probably not happening this year:

  • Persona 5
  • Prey
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

I have some games that I've bought but haven't added to the pile yet, so they're wildcards. But I think the above gives me a pretty solid idea of what I will and won't be playing.

P5 would be a hard one to finish by the end of the year given the other games on your list, for sure. Have you started it, and if so, how far in are you?

I’ve been thinking of doing a New Game + run in 2019. It would be fun to revisit the world, and to watch the story unfold while knowing how it all ends.

I've started it and got through the first story arc (with Kamoshida). I'm pretty confident that I could finish it, or at least make a lot of progress in it, before the end of the year, except I just don't use my Playstation much these days. I went to do something with it last night and was surprised that it was completely powered off instead of sleeping, and then I realized that I hadn't used it since we had a power outage at our house last month.

Prey (PC) and Tokyo Mirage Sessions (Wii U) are in the same boat. I'm not using the hardware they're on, so when I go to play something, I don't usually think of those things until later.
