Feels like that A Aron deal will doom the Packers to never quite have enough to win a Super Bowl status until he retires.

Well, there goes the "they knew about it" theory. Unless they were just gambling that it wasn't going to come back with charges.

It certainly won't help.

I've often wondered about the motivations of certain elite QBs at contract renegotiation time. Are they more keen on stuffing their bank balances than on helping their teams to be more competitive? I was always particularly puzzled by Peyton Manning in his later years at the Colts.

Perhaps I'm being naive...

I'm sure they did it now to take advantage of structuring it a certain way that helps.

The cap will go up and this won't be the biggest deal for long.

Also compared to the Ryan and Stafford numbers and depending on the actual cap hits the Packers have one huge advantage. Rodgers is just way better than those guys.

Oh, and speaking of the Saints, Deadspin's WYTS on New Orleans is downright cruel.

And downright funny. Loved it.

Teddy to the Saints isn't something I expected, but am so glad it's happening for him. There he'll have a coach who can commit to him.

I wouldn't be surprised if they only released him because there were cameras all over the place. It's easier to hide sh*t when those cameras aren't around.

The defense had a seminar on compound interest in the first episode of Hard Knocks, for crying out loud.

I actually think it's a pretty crappy spot for him; barring an unexpected Brees injury, he's not going to play, and he needs to show he's still capable of playing to get a decent contract next offseason. He's basically being brought in as the Saints Nick Foles, in case there's an injury to Brees. And, yeah, Brees is getting older, but he's still got such a quick release he doesn't get pounded that much.

Bridgewater could have been the Brady to Bortles' Bledsoe.

The alliteration was all right there.

With shady pumped-up numbers!

Jimmy Haslam's football team having the stench of financial fraud wafting through its locker room is one of those things that would be too silly if it were written in a movie.

Hmm, you may be right, I was thinking Brees cap hit next year was significantly less than it is. Two years on the bench isn't as enticing as one year on the bench learning a playbook and taking over after Brees retires.

No doubt. 10% a year...

Not even that; Teddy is on a one-year deal right now, so he needs to be somewhere with a chance to actually play. Like, you know, Jacksonville.

LIKE, YOU KNOW, JACKSONVILLE.

The team with Bortles as QB1, Cody Kessler as QB2, and ~$19m of unused cap space, and a legitimate Super Bowl contender in spite of the first two.

I'll never understand why they weren't the one signing him in the first place. You don't want to move on from Bortles, fine, but you add someone that can at least compete for the job and someone with the skill set to fill the job if you need him to.

Because Bortles doesn't even have to be trash to derail this season. He can just as easily shred his knee in week 2, and then it doesn't even matter if faith in Bortles' ability was right or not.

Bridgewater has the skill set to run this offense like it needs to be run. Kessler? I mean, you really want to risk a season of your Super Bowl window on Kessler when you have the opportunity to add someone with Teddy's ability?

NFL loses attempt to dismiss Colin Kaepernick's collusion case. Funny how these collusion cases have staying power, isn't it?

That's the problem though. With someone like Bortles or Flacco, you CAN'T have anyone approaching a competent backup behind them without igniting a quarterback controversy. When you are literally the two worst qb's with 30+ starts, adding a backup with a passer rating north of 50 or drafted in the first round is the sound of footsteps.

In the case of Flacco, that is deliberate.

Oh, hey, it's Jacksonville's turn for WYTS.

Shockingly, people don't seem to have confidence in Blake Bortles.

Clearly they didn't hear from the *rest* of the Jags fanbase that thinks Bortles is good now.

Cheering for Bortles was a lot more fun when everyone recognized he was trash. It was contrarian. Now the fans have bought in and it's like, guys, no, we have Super Bowl chances now, it's not funny anymore...

Maybe Bortles will end up on the NFL cuts tracker? We'll know by 4 p.m. Saturday!

In related cuts news, somewhere around 40 percent of the Panthers' Week 1 O-line starters will show up on the list I linked to above.

By "rest," do you mean *you*?

Wander into the Jags subreddit or their SB Nation team site sometime though. Bortles true believers everywhere. I imagine it's what living in the Bible Belt is like.

I think we just witnessed the end of Christian Hackenberg as an NFL QB.

He played last night, went 7-of-16, threw two INTs and lost a fumble.

Eagles cut him this morning.

That's a shame, I'll miss talking about him as much as he misses receivers.

In other news, Roberto Aguayo kicked the game winner last night. He may have a future with the Chargers!

Finally, Aaron Donald got paid: six-year contract extension worth $135 million with $87 million guaranteed

Tell me that isn’t the greatest mural you’ve ever seen. Why is the Jaguar just LOOKING at the sub and not pouncing on it? Was that jaguar coached by Doug Marrone?

Going to be interesting to see how this deal is structured, as they have no current-year cap space.

If his guaranteed money was signing bonus, there'd be no room to prorate this year's portion of it, unless they tore up his current year deal (his option year, $6.9m of guaranteed salary) and replaced it with low salary plus the prorated signing bonus.

Otherwise, the guaranteed money might be in the future, with guaranteed salary and/or roster bonuses, in which case he wouldn't see any of the actual money in 2018.

I believe he gets a $40 mil bonus next year, which is part of the last "Jared Goff is cheap" years.

So,big hit next year.

According to OverTheCap, they actually did my first suggestion. He got a $40m signing bonus, his $6.9m guaranteed salary this year got torn up, replaced with $892,000 base salary, and $8m prorated portion of that signing bonus fills the rest of the space and more (OTC actually has the Rams a few hundred thousand over the cap, which isn't possible, which means there's some cap detail on the Rams they're currently missing (a released player or some other small cap management tweak)
