I'm picking Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate this week. You Johnny-come-latelies who got into the series with Monster Hunter World best be warned: This ain’t Monster Hunter World. This is real Monster Hunter, with lots of loading screens, projectile weapons that can fire one shot every eight days, and the complete absence of enemy health bars.

If that doesn’t sound good to you (and saying it out loud, I can see why it wouldn’t) then you’re in luck! There are literally scores of titles to look at, with something that appeals to everyone.

Ammo Pigs: Armed and Delicious is a retro side-scrolling shooter that looks like Flicky, except instead of throwing vases at cats you’re shooting rocket launches at robots. You play as a pig who’s rescuing other pigs from an automated slaughterhouse. Can you save the world from being turned into sausage?

Super Shopper is the game for people with fond memories of those Toys R Us shopping spree contests from the 1980s. Pilot your shopping cart as fast as you can to complete your list in record time, but be careful! Crashing into walls will break your eggs and you’ll have to start over. It gets on the list mainly because I literally started making a top-down version of this exact game as my first GameMaker project, and I always like to see strange minds thinking alike.

Pro Office Calculator is, basically, a game about easter eggs. Explore your office desktop applications and see what’s hidden there. Is there a story? I don’t know, but apparently you can find and play a game called “Dooom,” so there’s that.

Heavy Dreams is for fans of walking simulators who think walking is too much work. The year is 2060 and you find a laptop in your attic. Sift through the files and web history of a teenage boy from 2010, ignoring the premise that a laptop even booting up after 50 years in an attic is patently absurd, and find out his story.

Donut County would by my game of the week if Monster Hunter wasn’t coming to the switch. It’s kind of like Katamari Damacy in reverse. You pilot a hole that gets bigger the more falls into it, and the object is to be the biggest hole. Swallow cities in this game with a premise that raises the question: Is this what we get for games now that pot is legal in the states where they make games?

But, as I said, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is my game of the week. My boundless enthusiasm for the series has even infected my wife, and by the end of the week we’ll be tracking, crafting and hunting monsters as a duo.

Call of Duty invented zombie DLC, then it became a standard way to extend the life of a game. This week we see 2 different approaches to zombie DLC: an earnest attempt by the originators to keep it fresh with Call of Duty WW2: Shadow War, and an ironic, bet-each-way reframing of it as hackneyed but hopefully still fun with Far Cry 5: Dead Living Zombies.

I’m most excited this week about Divinity Original Sin 2: Definitive Edition coming to PS4. One of my favourite things about this generation of games is that they’ve worked out how to put isometric RPGs onto consoles. I enjoyed Pillars of Eternity on PS4 and look forward to squinting at text boxes all over again for Divinity Original Sin 2. The Definitive Edition will feature more than mere graphic upgrades: they’ve heavily reworked Act 3, which apparently sucked as much as the first game’s Act 3. This gets my personal GOTW.

But for those who crave the new, there’s another isometric RPG leaving closed beta this week: Shadows: Awakening, published by the very hit-or-miss Kalypso Media. Its gimmick is that at any moment you can switch between the Shadow Realm, and the mortal plane, and switch characters to boot. It plays like something somewhere between Diablo and Pillars of Eternity, with the needle edging toward Diablo, but it certainly looks pretty enough.

Give me my Fire Pro Wrestling and Kiwami 2 STAT!

Hyakki Castle always looked cool, a dungeon crawler using Japanese folklore, but apparently the best thing it has going for it is the monster artwork. Bummer.

I'm a fan of Victor Vran and will own it again on Switch once the price comes down from the $40 it's launching at. I never did get around to the Motorhead DLC/expansion, so it'll be worth the price of admission for that.

I've been looking forward to Monster Hunter for a while now. I've got my pre-order order in and everything. Can't wait to give it a try!

Really excited to re-roll a new party for Divinity: OS2 DE.

Been watching some beta streams on YouTube and the QoL improvements joining the Definitive Edition look awesome so far.

Props for Larian Studios giving current PC owners a free upgrade to DE just like they did on OS1.

I'm so in for Monster Hunter. I got bit by the bug with the demo and I'm eager to really get in to it. I've been warming up with my old mostly unplayed copy of Freedom Unite, but I want that big screen and those twin sticks on the Switch so bad.

It’s more than the sum of its parts, but you have to embrace the jank.

Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition has been a long pre-order for me. Looking forward to it.

Donut Country looks to be a nice game to play between other games. The game deluge is about to begin!

My copy was dispatched last night; bring on the jank!
