I'm calling it. This is probably going to be my 2018 GOTY, assuming the rest of the game surfaces before the end of the year. I'd even go as far as to say that this might be the best rhythm game I've ever played. Like, sorry Rock Band, you have to play bass now, there's a new frontman in town.

What have you found so far this year that can stand up to the onslaught of holiday 2018?

I was just thinking about this recently. 2018 doesn't have as many stand out games for me as 2017 did so I'll have to put some thought into coming up with a top ten at the end of the year.

Right now Wolfenstein II on Switch and Dead Cells are the first things that spring to mind but then they're both recent releases.

Long story short, unlike last year I don't think I have an obvious GOTY at this stage. It'll probably just end up being Smash!

I've been mulling this over too... Nothing so far has blown me away like several games did laat year. Of course part of that is how few games I seemed to have played this year.

I'd look over my list and choose one but that list is on my computer at home. It speaks volumes that I can't think of one to choose off the top of my head.

But a couple of the big games I'm interested in are still coming later this year... so maybe the last third of the year will be spectacular.

God of War for me.

Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter.

God of War for me, though I haven't played MHW yet.

Y'know I like having a mid year check in, so I can see what people love so far this year. I'd love to check in with the tastes of this particular hive minds tastes.

Battletech for me.

BATTLETECH
Star Traders: Fronteirs
Cultist Simulator

Fingers crossed for Phantom Doctrine. If that one comes close to my expectations it'll be the clear winner.

I'm hoping best expansion DLC will be WoW: Battle for Azeroth or Total War: Rome II: Rise of the Republic

Yeah, looking back it feels like I've got a number of titles jostling for top spots.

Survival: Subnautica / NMS: NEXT

TBSim/Strat: Star Traders: Frontiers / Battletech

Sports Management: Football Tactics & Glory / Motorsport Manager (PC) / OOTP 19

Mundane Sim: Gold Rush: The Game / House Flipper

And I'm still eagerly anticipating Phantom Doctrine, Two Point Hospital, Farming Simulator 19, and Disco Elysium.

Yeeks!

It's gonna be a bloodbath come GOTY season.

I’ve been sucked into this darling little indie title called World of Warcraft. My GOTY since it doesn’t leave me with enough time to play a single other game.

I really hope it catches on, old school graphics but addictive gameplay.

Oh God someone get me help......

Subnautica is my GOTY. I think everyone should play through it.

God of War is my runner-up.

Looks up from leveling alts.

What did someone say something? If you need me I'm heading to Lordaeron.

Nothing beats Subnautica so far for me.

I actually finished God of War which means I must have loved it.

Monster Hunter World and God of War were both incredible, but Hollow Knight is currently #1 for me. I did not expect that going in. Quite simply the best Metroidvania I've ever played.

So far mine is definitely Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Followed by Life is Strange: Before the Storm.
But still quite a lot of games I want to play this year. Such as Monster Hunter World.

Also fell really deep into WoW again. Early 2005 contender for sure.

Battletech, Battletech, and Battletech.

Everything else I've played this year has been older pile stuff.

I still haven't played a game released this year...

I've barely played anything myself this year either! At least, compared to my usual mammoth list. Partly down to not really being able to justify the cost but mostly i think because I've been leaning more heavily on board games and PnP RPG's instead.

It's been a few years since I've played a game in the actual year of release, but I've made an exception for Battletech which is astonishingly good.

Going by GWJ rules - i.e. I played it first this year:

(In no particular order)

Unavowed
Battletech
Banner Saga 3
Yakuza: Kiwami
Prey: Mooncrash
Detention
Pillars of eternity 2
Mafia III
VA-11 HALL-A
XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

Dead Cells and Into The Breach for me so far. Fortnite maybe.

Hoping Smash Bros will steal the show in December though.

Slay the Spire - pretty much the only game I've played since buying it

I'll also follow these "GWJ rules" so let me figure out what all games I've played this year:

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
Batman: Arkham Knight
Crysis 2
Subnautica
Tacoma
Endless Legend
Pyre
Darkest Dungeon
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Assassins Creed: Freedom Cry
Pillars of Eternity
Prey: Mooncrash

Subnautica it is then, but Darkest Dungeon would be close. I'll disqualify Endless Legend since I've been playing it prior to this year. Tacoma and Prey: Mooncrash were great, but too short to leave a huge impression.

It's probably going to be Breath of the Wild for me. I played basically nothing else for the first 6 months of the year.

As for things released this year -- thus far I've enjoyed the time I've put into Slay the Spire, Into the Breach, and Star Traders: Frontiers.

Love the idea of a mid-year "prediction" thread.

Yoku's Island Express

This is sitting pretty firmly as number 1. While it's a wonderfully quirky, cute Metroidvania, it gets extra points for getting me into the Pinball community. I've already met a bunch of really cool people who play digital and physical tables, and have been addicted ever since!

Monster Hunter World

It's everything good about the series with added QoL stuff. Damage numbers, rolling back weapon upgrades, tracking etc. While I miss the wackiness of the older games, along with their colourful armour sets and silly weapons, World is one of the series' bests.

Celeste

Simply the best platformer I've ever played. Beautiful story and soundtrack as well.

Battletech

Putting down a prediction for this despite not having played much. I haven't yet wrapped my head around the rules so I'm currently feeling pretty frustrated and lost. But from what I've seen, it checks all my boxes. I just need to sit down with a manual and learn what to do.

Breath of the Wild Champion’s Ballad DLC. If for no other reason than to put BotW on again, but it’s an amazing amount of good Zelda for a DLC.

Right now it would have to be Subnautica, but with DQXI and RDR 2 still to come I’m thinking it won’t stay there.
