Loved Elmore's old work. He was my favorite.

His Dragonlance stuff was awesome.

I have loved his stuff since I was a kid. I got to meet him at DragonCon several years ago (weird to me that there was no line, as I was able to walk right up to his table). I bought a package of prints and got him to autograph one of them for me. Very personable and we chatted for several minutes about art and Kentucky. I thought it pretty cool that he was from my home state.

Ahem, I MEANT Bargle.

Technically not a picture.

I'm confused. They drop what I think is an AD&D book, and that's what he's looking at when he mentions a Dwarven Rogue. But I didn't think that was around until 2nd edition (which Wikipedia backs me up on, for what that's worth). And Rogue wasn't even a class of its own until 3rd edition, it was a header for Theif or Bard.

So... what version of D&D is he using?

That's an AD&D 2nd edition book he's holding. I've still got the same one on the shelf.

So by Dwarven rogue he meant either a bard or a thief? Or was that class brought in pre-3rd edition?

(Or maybe everything was staged and pre-written and the line has nothing to do with the book shown)

Or maybe he's using rogue because it more accurately conveys the archetype for the character (the same reason the thief class was renamed to rogue in Third Edition)?

My guess is that they started out with 1e, switched to 2e, and then stayed with 2e because converting to 3e would have been way more involved.

Calling the class "rogue" rather than "thief" may or may not signify (shrug).

And here are a couple of pictures, one each of my favorites from 1e and 5e:

Shoot, I was only going to object to "...basement is unlike anything you've ever seen."

I'm going to guess that the producer said something like, "Can you say something other than thief? It doesn't have a positive connotation."

Or just the fact that he meant 'rogue group' ie bard, or thief. (not the X-Wing squadron)

My idea of Magic Mouth and Gygax's idea of Magic Mouth are very different.

This is true for many things.

Of course, Gygax was cribbing ideas from everywhere and anywhere in the early days. For example, this is where he got the rust monster, bullette, and owlbear...

I don't do D&D because it corrupts people and turns them to the devil like pokemon.

Gremlin, I had some of those monster figures as a kid. Pretty funny.

That article is mind blowing, as a kid I always figured those critters were part of some obscure fantasy series.
I wonder if the artist in Hong Kong was ever aware of their significance to millions of tabletop gamers.

Only tangentially D&D related, but I've always loved the line art form the 90's era Deadlands books:

Tony DiTerlizzi is my favourite D&D artist, and my favourite illustrator anywhere; I'm surprised he's not been mentioned yet. His portraits were head and shoulders above anything else in the AD&D 2e Monstrous Manual, and I went and bought all the Planescape Monstrous Compendiums even though I never played Planescape. It's like Yosh*taka Amano dressed characters from Brian Froud.

Edit: Really, filter? Yosh*taka?

I may be double dipping come Oct 18th...

man, I really want those

i'll be jumping into a gaming group next week on a trial basis and they're currently mid-way through the starter kit adventure so I've been given one of the pre-gen characters to play (the Dwarf Cleric). Just for fun I thought I'd do a sketch of them rather than come up with just a written description...

Damn that's pretty, but my original printing is almost signed by the whole Acq. Inc. cast...

I always got a warm feeling when I saw depictions of Inns in DnD.

The last one must be from Dragonlance.

You are correct! I adored that series.

Tagging in for some light-hearted fun.

Larry Elmore's stuff has always been the true vision of Dragonlance to me.

Technically not a picture. Colbert had Joe Manganiello on, and they talked about D&D for the entire interview.

That's funny he was on Colbert, because I just stumbled across this cool interview from a couple weeks ago in Manganiello's D&D man-cave:
