NFL 2018 Offseason Thread

You know that ugly-ass statue of awful human being Jerry Richardson that stands in front of the Panthers' home stadium in Charlotte?

The team's new owner says he's quote-unquote "contractually obligated" to keep it where it is.

That's where he should have added, "but I'm not contractually obligated to rebuild it if something were to happen to it."

Well Carolina fans, you've got a creepy man statue at your stadium, of which all kinds of things can be draped on or signs held in front of. You know what to do.

Elsewhere in creepy NFL man news, we got LeSean McCoy.

“The assailant demanded specific items of jewelry that had been previously gifted to Ms. Cordon by Mr. McCoy, which Mr. McCoy had requested back on many occasions,” the statement from the attorney explains. “In fact, after Ms. Cordon refused to return her jewelry gifts to Mr. McCoy, he would often suggest to Ms. Cordon that she could be robbed because the jewelry was expensive.”

Although the statement apparently doesn’t come out and say it, the implication is inescapable: The lawyer believes McCoy orchestrated the invasion of his home and the ensuing robbery of and attack on Cordon.

I guess he wasn't called "Shady" for nothing.

The attack on McCoy's ex was, based on the photograph posted to Instagram, barbaric.

Given the severity, location, and timing of the attack, it'd take a crazy coincidence for Shady to not be involved. Of course, the false assault accusation Reuben Foster's ex made is already being brought up. And for sure, there was a coincidence in that case in which the accuser had bodily harm in close proximity to the time of the Foster incident, but was in fact unrelated.

Somehow, though, I don't think that kind of coincidence is going to strike twice. This one smells different.

Oh, and if that wasn't enough NFL-players-being-sh*tty for one day, Brandon Browner, one of the original Legion of Boom foursome, is being charged with attempted murder of his ex.

I saw someone asking on Twitter about the worth of drafting McCoy since he was going to miss three games. Someone responded, "Dude, he's going to jail!"

McCoy has made over $50 million in NFL contracts, why the heck would he risk everything over some jewelry. Just seems stupid.

Some more info on this:

Apparently Shady has been trying to get the woman, who has been (allegedly) squatting in his home with her 16 year old son, out of the apartment. They were supposed to appear in court today on the matter. This certainly adds a wrinkle to the whole affair. (Not defending McCoy at all, just putting it out there)

Edit: Ugh, just read the letter from Cordon's attorney. Yeah, now I lean more towards "something stinks here" than false accusation.

What a mess.

And in North Carolina, it is far more likely that it will get vandalized or taken down than statues honoring genocidal traitors.

Moving right along to on-field news ... Bill Barnwell has ranked the teams 1-to-32 in terms of offensive firepower.

His ranks are:
1: Chiefs
2. Giants
3. Falcons
4. Steelers
5. Vikings
6. Rams
7. Eagles
8. Patriots
9. Bears
10. Chargers
...
32. Jets

Discuss!

Edit: Here's a better link if you want to start at the top instead of going straight to Carolina at No. 18.

Since 2010, no player has had the ball past the line of scrimmage more than LeSean McCoy. He has over 200 more touches than the second place guy (Frank Gore, for the record). Which means no other player has been a ballcarrier hit and tackled by defenders more than McCoy.

The discussions about this incident are going to end up exploring CTE territory. I guarantee it.

I like how your link goes right to Carolina.

Top-level talent wins out over depth.

I'd move the Jets up depth-wise. I like Kearse and think Terrell Pryor is going to bounce back from his injured and lost year in 2017.

I absolutely think Barnwell dropped the ball by ignoring Quincy Enunwa. Again, good WR depth but not top end talent here.

They definitely lack at TE though. Lots of promising talent that hasn't delivered. Might as well write that about the Jets and Browns whenever you talk about them.

///

I think the Dolphins have a much worse WR corp than just about anyone else in the league.

///

sh*t, I'd probably put the Jets above the Hawks.

///

Ravens are too high. Way too high. Crabtree, yes, but who is catching passes at TE? RB position is good, but from a WR perspective we have no idea if John Brown's career was over two years ago and how much Willie Snead needed Brees to be good. I can't believe they're ranked 24th.

///

How in the hell is Washington number 18? They don't have a single WR1 on their team. I like the acquisition of Paul Richardson and while Jordan Reed is elite he's also perpetually broken.

///

Holy f*ck the Bears are at number 9?!?! I get people are in love with Allen Robinson, but this ranking would feel better if it was made following the 2015 season.

He really jumped them up the ranking because their RBs, which I get, but damn.

///

Sorry, Pats and Bears over the Chargers is blowing my mind. The Pats will, literally, begin the year with no one at WR.

///

I agree with the rest, but I probably would've put the Giants #1.

///

tldr His focus on the top end and not the depth is a problem with this article because it puts the Pats in top 10 territory instead of bottom half territory where they rightfully belong with their current crew. Gronk is amazing, but when he's out the Pats kinda suck.

Seriously, the Bears at 9. What the hell?

Ehh, he has a weird definition of "offensive firepower". This list is mostly ranking the team's top-end pass catchers (eg. basically Gronk by himself makes New England #8), with elite RBs also counting, and then everyone else is just called depth.

Barnwell: Failing to deliver since Grantland shuttered their doors.

Clearly this is a situation where waiting for the facts to actually appear somewhere, like with an arrest of McCoy or in a courtroom, might make more sense. Right now it's just crazy and PFT fodder.

Eh, it's one man's opinion. And Barnwell has always done these off-kilter sort of rankings.

That said, I don't know how the Browns make the top 32 in any NFL rankings.

Because everyone still thinks Josh Gordon is the guy who led the league like he did when Manti Te'o was still making headlines for his imaginary girlfriend.

I like Gordon, but the Browns are a tad high for my tastes. Landry is a huge get for them though and definitely puts them above 32 territory. For once.

In general though I do think Barnwell's analysis and writing has taken a dip. It's like when game devs get hired by EA.

Exactly, but this being the Internet Age, that is not allowed.

Yeah, there's too much flying around from every direction.

I strongly suspect McCoy is involved in something bad here, but it's something to wait and let the details get sorted out on.

However, what should absolutely happen is the Bills do what the 49ers did with Reuben Foster, which was to essentially give him a de facto team suspension during the process. Just as Foster was absent from 49ers minicamps and OTAs, McCoy should not be working out at team facilities or participating in Bills training camp until this situation clarifies.

SHE HAD A NAME, YOU KNOW. You better say "Lennay Kekua" with some respect.

*sigh* Pretty much this.

Let the NFL (alleged) scumbaggery continue!

Jags DT Marcel Dareus is being sued for sexual assault. It's a strange one though. There only appears to be a civil complaint, not a criminal one.

The accuser is claiming Dareus had sex with her following a date, while she was unconscious, and gave her herpes.

Interestingly, the complaint further states that the two continued to date and have sex, up until the herpes diagnosis.

So, the complaint is for sex without consent in the one instance, and then knowingly giving her the herp with the continued unprotected sex that was consensual.

I wonder if stuff like this is why Buffalo was ready to offload him for cheap?

I think that falls into the not "informing partner of STD" before sex which is why it is civil.

Oddly enough, Florida has some strong laws for STI disclosure, unlike its gun laws which were implemented by Billy the Kid. Once again, the United States is all over what happens in the bedroom but lets anyone do just about anything with a gun in their hand. Admittedly, in this case, I approve of the laws.

Also, herpes can be easily transmitted even when using protection.

Hoo boy, you ain't kidding.

In 2015, according to police reports, a woman went to police in New Jersey saying that LeSean McCoy had hired her to help him host a party but that, when she arrived, it ended up being more of a family barbecue—and afterward McCoy refused to pay. The woman also told police that she was forced to leave behind thousands of dollars in jewelry at McCoy’s home, and later added that she suspected that McCoy just wanted to have sex with her. The exact date of the party isn’t given, but lines up with the 2015 party that McCoy advertised on his Instagram as being “females only.”

Sounds like he hired her expecting her to bang all his friends while she came to perform, but perhaps not that way and made a scene while trying to leave.

Regardless, he comes by his nickname honestly.

The 6 sharpest uniforms in the NFL according to SBNation.

Agree with the Niners. Not agreeing with the Jags especially since the teal is an alternate, not the main jersey. Main jersey is an also-ran black uniform that doesn't come close to matching the clean look of the Raiders. (The all-teal jersey might be a good one, we'll see it in action, but not sure it'll be top 6 material).

When it comes to simple, classic uniforms though, Packers and Colts always belong on the list. Packers, Colts, Niners, and Raiders would definitely be 4 of my top 6.

My favorite Niners unit are those with the drop shadow numbers. I've always loved those. My high school team wore the Steelers , but with Orange instead of Gold. It's a classic look, but I'm not sure I think they are sharp.

Here's were Legion bans me from the thread.

I think the Niners color scheme is terrible.

What a boring ass list. Also, Tampa is clearly the best:

I would never do such a thing. I would express my displeasure in much more subtle ways.
