The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild Catch All

Yeah I finished it and, like you, found that there was a lot more to it than I'd expected! I don't wanna spoil anything but I'd say it gets more impressive as it goes on and includes one of my stand out moments of the whole game. Try to avoid spoilers if you can!

That’s a good sell right there. I struggled last night with

Spoiler:

waterblight Gannon, which is my first of the Gannon fights.

You’ve given me some encouragement to push through, so thank you!

For me Master Mode is basically “I almost never fight” mode, more because it takes forever to kill anything and I’m going to go through at least three weapons in the process. On the other hand, it forces you to think of other ways to deal with situations which is cool.

There were a lot of deaths before I took a step back and realised I had to start doing things diffetently! It was quite satisfying to see myself adapting though and then when I started to feel powerful again I appreciated it a lot more! The fact enemies recover health is probably the biggest challenge for me...

That’s all pretty interesting. Some of my least favorite fights are against the white enemies because I just feel like I’m banging away on them and breaking weapons for minimal gain. If master mode is full of that feeling I should probably stay away, although the idea of finding alternative ways to win those fights is fascinating. I’m not sure where I’d start.

You're very welcome! I'm glad I replied! I don't know if objectively it's more difficult or if it was just my play style but...

Spoiler:

...I generally found Waterblight more challenging, which is weird cause a lot of people feel the main story naturally pushes you to face them first!

I think part of the fun with Master Mode is that it's such a different experience. If you just restarted Normal Mode it'd be really easy given your knowledge of the game, but Master Mode requires you to use everything you learned in the first playthrough but at the same time throw a lot of your thinking/tricks out the window. I found it really satisfying to play so I would definitely recommend sticking with it.

There's nothing like the letdown of doing a massive sidequest that took months of searching and ending up with some tiny reward.

Spoiler:

Seriously, just 300 Rupees for the Leviathan quest?

After 'more than 115 hours' (come on Nintendo -- just give me an actual number), I think I'm going to have to turn to a guide for the final 8 shrines. Unfortunately, I had the shrine ping turned off in the early game because shrines were visible everywhere and the pinging was annoying. So it's likely that I missed some in the areas I was traveling through during the first 50 hours of play.

I used a guide for the last two shrines after zig zagging across the entire map looking for them. They both turned out to be combat shrines so I didn’t feel like I had cheated on anything important.

Started bouncing back to this between sessions of hollow knight on the weekend, eventually decided to start a Master mode game since I wanted to start fresh but didn't want to delete my old game.

The game feels totally different in the opening area. Having to fight foe every advantage in combat or actually using stealth to avoid enemies is really pretty refreshing. Anyone actually manage to beat the game this way?

Hey Rave,

I've defeated Ganon and gotten all the shrines but there are lots of quests I haven't done too! Trial of the Sword is so hard!!!

I agree about it being totally different, it took me a while to get my head around the fact I had to play the game in a very different style! Really I went full stealth on the Plateau just to survive!

Master Mode is so satisfying though! I really recommend sticking with it in spite of the difficulty!

Thanks good to know it's worth sticking with. I'm really liking the value it's placing on finding those floating platforms early on. The strength of weapons you can find in those chest are game changing.

So far my encounters generally start with me using stealth to look for any environmental advantages, after exhausting that using archery to pick off look outs then going for stealth backstabs. If things get messy I've been using my more powerful weapons to engage in head on combat but generally it seems like that should be avoided at all costs just because it's so resource intensive.

I've heard the master sword trials are frustratingly hard in this mode, considering I didn't even do them in normal that may make it near impossible. So far though this has been a refreshing change.

So I've been reading old posts from when you all were playing this at launch and it's really made me appreciate how much I missed on my first play through. I did get a fair amount of content maybe 100 seeds and 60 shrines but there is so much I missed that I didn't even know about.

I apparently missed a huge quest line involving a house, never upgraded my core abilities, never owned a mount, or do a certain island shrine.

I've been taking this master quest play through much slower mostly because encounters are forcing me to employ new strategies and i am really enjoying the game so much more.

Just wanted to say how interesting it has made the game to go back and read everyone's thoughts and how they have evolved over time. Might have to start making this a habit when I go back to a game. It's made this time playing really fun. Thanks community!

I really want wait to start this game.

I have 200+ hours in this game and I still find things online I never saw or knew about, down to the tiniest details. It’s really pretty incredible.

The game is huge! I'm a bit jealous that you've got so much left you experience for the first time! How's the Master Mode playthrough going?

My approach to my first playthrough was to do as much as possible without looking at anything online and then check to see what I'd missed just before I finished the main story line.

I bounced over to my normal play through after reading there is a map completion percent that shows up after you defeat ganon. It says I'm at 19.8 percent complete so I've missed a ton of content. On actually shocked I've discovered less then half the game in my initial 75hour play.

My master playthrough is going great, now that I've got some weapons and some decent equipment I don't have to think as much about combat as I was. I have never killed a Lynel though and tried when I was in my normal game i still managed to fail even after mounting him 4 times in a row. I'm a bit worried I'm not going to have the chops to beat anything other then basic bokoblins.

We will see though I'm really enjoying the game and discovering things I've never seen before. I may head over to do thunder blight first before I waste a ton of time in this play, if I can beat him at least I know I'll he able to handle the other blights.

Started up Master Mode over the weekend on a lark and really hit a brick wall early on. I always thought the weapon degradation stuff was bordering on annoying but it went full blast infuriating in Master Mode early on. Still I pushed through and got a funny kind of joy sneaking around and finding weird ways to murder enemies.

I mean I knew a lot of this stuff was in the game but I never really used most of it until I was forced too. It's given me a new appreciation for this game. Glad I pushed past those early feelings of frustration. Also, parrying a Guardian laser is still the most satisfying thing ever.

I'm not particularly interested in trying master mode because of the degradation and I feel like I'd just end up wasting a lot of time trying to pick enemies off with bombs (kinda like using a bow and arrow in Demon's Souls or Dark Souls). I always end up going with any method that works regardless of how long it takes.

I'm kind of the same way. I spent like five minutes yesterday trying to take out one of those laser turrets on Hyrule Castle with bombs before I forced myself to give up.

I’m still midway through my first play through. If I bought the DLC now what would change?

I'm not sure about the other dlc stuff but Master Mode is completely separate. You have to start a new game and they only give you one save slot as well as one auto save.

You're given a number of quests that lead you to the DLC content. They pop up the next time you play.

Would I get the benefit of the tracker that shows where you've been? Would I even want that on my first play through?

You'd get tons of benefit from the tracker. It's my absolute favorite feature of the DLC.

I stumbled across a mask that must be from the dlc. It seems to make a lot of enemies not aggro unless attacked which is quite helpful early on in Master Mode. Could be a little OP for extended use though.

Spoiler:

if you mean the monster masks, that's in the base game

Negatory, they mean

Spoiler:

Majora's Mask, a DLC item that makes most enemies non-aggro unless attacked.

I think that item is meant to make Master mode sort of as painful as you decide it should be, as opposed to making you stealth-mode everything even when you're just gathering Durians or whatever.

I'm not gonna lie, I may have used this (just a little bit) during my Master Mode playthrough! Also, great use of the word 'Negatory'!

For me a big part of the appeal of Master Mode is that Weapon Degradation + Enemy Health Regeneration leads to all kinds of creativity! I don't think Master Mode, in particular, would be as good without limited use of weapons. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that! But I'm a huge Zelda fan so it probably suits me to spend loads of time trying different approaches to the same problems!

Anyone else playing Breath of the Wild at the moment? I've decided to go back and the up the loose ends on my Master Mode save file. I'm working on the Champions' Ballad at the moment. I might even try Trial of the Sword again if this goes well! There are plenty of side quests and Korok seeds to keep me busy too.

I'm still playing it.

I’ve been playing it a lot and have fallen in love all over again. I did the first round of the Trials of the Sword and the first champions quest. I’ve been straight up looking up DLC item locations because I don’t remember enough of the game for the hints to be useful. I’ve already found like five big areas in the world that I missed in my first 170 hours of play.

I'm playing it right now. Only two Divine Beasts in. But I did unlock all the towers.

I love that about BOTW, I've had a lot of experiences like that. Are you playing Normal or Master Mode? I'm honestly not sure that I can beat Trial of the Sword on Master Mode... I'll try though, it's be nice to say I've done it!

Is this your first time playing? That's a nice place to be if it is, lots of great content ahead!
