Rage Catch-All

2019

Curious how much is Avalanche and how much is Bethesda/id. Looks a lot like Avalanche. Mad Max + Just Cause = I'm interested.

I liked the original Rage but that was so long ago. Not sure if I'd be into this new version. I suppose they'll have a battle royale mode. That'd be kinda neat and more appealing to me than PUBG or Fortnight. It just makes more sense to me setting wise to set a battle royale in a post apocalyptic world. I think I could get into the role-playing nature of that.

That gameplay trailer looks really good.

Yeah I’m sold. Looks like a lot of action-ey fun!!

I hope they don't stray too far from the original. I really liked it.

YUS. I’m in.

Not sure my potato could handle megatextures 2.0 but I’m ok with PS4 port if I haven’t upgraded by then.

Your character, the elite ranger Walker, thrives on an Overdrive mechanic that rewards aggressive gameplay. Think of it as a sequel to Doom's glory kill system -- where you previously received 'just' health and ammo, Overdrive also amps your guns' abilities and increases the chances of better rewards from fallen enemies. The longer you can stay in Overdrive mode, the better your chances of winning fights that could otherwise seem hopeless. It's a way of keeping the gameplay frantic, which is more than a little appropriate in a game whose over-the-top action is clearly inspired by Mad Max and other world-gone-insane experiences.

A Giant Bomb emailer had the best theory on this.

Paraphrased.

With the Miller/WB lawsuit, all Mad Max projects were put on hold, including (possibly) Mad Max 2 (the game). So Bethesda went to the good folks at Avalanche and said if you have all those Mad Max 2 assets, but can't use the license, we have a Mad Max knock-off license that needs a sequel. Want to rebrand?

That makes sense. Hey, you built Mad Max 2 and can't sell it, well, we've got some post apocalyptic character models for ya!

I'll likely pick this up just for the bouncy and speedy movement mechanics that were on display.

Full disclosure: I liked the original Rage enough that I have played through it three or four times and tried to get my wife to do all the coop mission stuff with me.

So we're all in on the joke about the main character being a ranger named Walker right? I'm just stating the obvious probably.

Is he from Texas is the big question.

Although Rage would have been one of the last games I'd expect to come back, I'm actually pretty interested. I liked the original game, and should really go back and finish it this time, now that I have better hardware to run it. And with Bethesda's recent Doom and Wolfenstein games, and crazy trailer, I'd like to see where this goes.

Watching the car combat part in the above trailer really reminds me of Mad Max (in a good way).

Other thoughts: the enemies don't look like they are as bullet spongy and your character looks a lot tougher. I wonder if that are just because they are running the trailer in god mode or if it is actually how it will be.

I kind of want to replay Rage now just to refresh this world in my mind. I seem to remember that there were only a couple of guns worth using (the pistol with upgraded bullets and the shotgun) and I remember the Wing Sticks being really hard to figure out, but really awesome once you did.

I'd actually say the vehicle combat looks even better than MM (which was pretty good to begin with).

It just looks like a lot of crazy, stupid fun. It looks great. Hopefully can do Borderlands style co-op and I'll be all in.

Yea the first game had an interesting co-op mode. Kind of reminded me of the Spec Ops mode from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games.

Playing Rage 2 gave me flashbacks to playing Doom (2016). And that’s a very good thing....

The PR liaison at my demo described Rage 2's design as a mashup of Avalanche’s exploration sensibilities and Id’s FPS tuning, and at least the second half of that proved to be true from the moment I entered the tutorial. The liquid-fast circle strafing, the big, broad-shouldered weight of the firearms, the heavy, heavy industrial soundtrack—all of that was in place, and all of it felt just as wonderful as before.

Full article. TL;DR version is the shooting feels like it evolved from Doom not Rage.

But... Doom felt like Rage?

Not all all. Doom was so much faster and arcade like. Also no ADS (mostly).

Or wait.. you being cheeky?

Not being cheeky. I honestly remember them feeling very similar (and good). I guess I'm misremembering Rage.

Maybe similar to Doom 3 but not Doom (2016). I remember being rather squishy in Rage and mostly played it as a stealthy sniper where I could. I think I mainly used two weapons through the game: the scoped pistol with the tier 3 ammo and the shotgun (for mutants).

I liked the shooting in Rage way better than Doom (which was also good). I am excited for this one.

Rage had very good shooting. You weren't a Doom Marine demi-god but you also didn't feel too frail either. Enemies not too bullet spongey, good feedback on the guns. Yeah, it was pretty fun!

I should point out, when I said the two felt similar I did not mean in terms of the character or enemies. Strictly speaking about aiming and firing.

Looking fantastic I have to say. Mad Max has given me a taste for car combat.
