Assassin's Creed Odyssey RPG-all

Pages

Assassin's Creed Odyssey, out in October, is a full-on RPG, with dialogue trees, legendary loot, and even more abilities to develop than AC Origins. You can play as a male or female character, both with the same abilities and story lines (and no boobplate for the ladies, but give them time - I'll wager there'll be DLC boobplate eventually...). Unlike any other AC game, combat is resource-based. You fill up your glowing adrenaline tube by hitting, blocking, and dodging, and you can spend adrenaline on special combat abilities. In AC Odyssey, your home base is ... a boat. Ubisoft just can't seem to give up their toy boats. Of course for a game set in Greece, a boat is kind of a necessity.

AC Odyssey, which Ubisoft Quebec has been working on for three years, takes place during the Peloponnesian War in the 5th century BC. So, if you thought AC Origins didn't have enough Assassining, you ain't seen nothing yet. The First Civilization is still around, though, because your character carries a First Civ weapon - the Spear of Leonidas. Based on these introductory videos, it looks a lot like AC Origins gameplay, but with branching dialogue and a few other RPG elements.

Frankly, I don't know what to say. It looks to me like a straight up RPG-themed third person brawler. No stealth, no other signature series gameplay features. Calling this game Assassin's Creed is an odd choice.

Sept. 12 2019 update:

Discovery Tour is now available! Free update for Odyssey owners, also available as a $20 standalone for PC.

The previews I’ve read said they’re increasing the viability of stealth compared to Origins, so I wouldn’t worry about that. It seems the skill trees are split between ranged, melee, and stealth abilities.

I’m totally down for more RPGing in my AC games though. The conversation system is a nice addition, and the ability to choose your character’s gender is great.

I’m less sure about the land battles, and I admit I’m tired of any sort of boat travel or naval combat at this point. Maybe they’ve overhauling that as well? I can hope.

Dammit. I was just starting to feel like I was slowly, inch by inch catching up on this series.

Pick any two or three of the games (other than Black Flag) and skip 'em is my advice.

Never! I will play through them ALL in order if it kills me!

Or I get REALLY bored! Whatever comes first.

Really hope the end up doing another tourism mode, that was such a cool idea in Origins. Might not have been perfect but it was a great first crack at it.

I have a feeling I won't get around to Origins' DLC at this point. Maybe if they had waited another year before Odyssey, but I think now I'd feel like I'm trying to squeeze it in for completionist's sake rather than because I really want to. The gap between Syndicate and Origins DID allow me to catch up on the series.

It's totally beautiful and all, but it doesn't look substantially different from Origins. I think they're really making a mistake by trying to push these out once a year.

Origins itself, built this incredibly beautiful and huge world, but the story was really thin and it didn't feel like there was that much to do. After playing Origins, I went back and started on the Ezio collection and it felt so much more rich and dense in comparison.

Gating the nifty weapons and armor behind a paywall was also really alienating.

Also, one of the best parts of the AC series is the historical tourism aspect. More than any other AC game so far, AC Odyssey's world seemed inauthentic - like a Disneyfied fantasy version of ancient Greece.

On the other hand, if they wanted to do a full on fantasy action game set in ancient Greece, I'd be pretty cool with that, but we've already got God of War.

*YOU'VE* already got God of War maybe, but I'd rather play an ancient Greece action game with a Less Angry Bisexual Lady than an ancient Greece action game with an Angry Dad with Testosterone issues!

Did you miss the bit about Ubi Quebec working on this for three years? It isn't getting pushed out.

Anything you could pay for you could also earn with in-game credits, though admittedly the rarer items could take a LONG time to appear in camel boy's boxes.

I loved the hell out of Origins, way more than expected, and just got done dumping 100 hours into it. I was all set to take a giant wait and see on Odyssey, because I'm not convinced they can catch lightning in a bottle a second time so quickly.

But then they say you can play as a female main character, and I'm all like "Oh reeeeaaalllyyyyyy..."

I may be in shortly after it's confirmed to be good.

This looks stunning. I'm still playing my way through the previous generation of AC games (Unity is next), but I'm absolutely getting this.

Anyone NOT playing Cassandra?

But God of War was terrible.

Think it might be a mistake to go back to yearly releases as well.

Apparently some people out there played the wrong Shepard too. It will happen again.

It will come down to animation and voice acting for me. I am leaning female though she looks badass. Pretty surprised they fully animated and voice acted the entire game twice that's awesome I wonder how they justified that on the budget.

Ouch the hot takes on God of war, surprised on the dislike for it. I didn't beat it but really enjoyed my time with it. Really interesting take on the lore (developers must have read Neil Gaiman). Graphically was beautiful, actually colourful, and voice acting was amazing. Even ignoring the combat and puzzles I'd say it's such a far cry from "terrible" in my opinion but to each their own I guess.

Minor clarification. I've never actually played any of the God of War games. From what I've seen, there are aspects that are interesting, and aspects that just aren't my kind of thing.

I love the idea of an open world ancient Greek fantasy game. I loved Titan Quest. But, if you are a marketing exec for a video game company, you are going to look at this particular conceptual space and see an 800lb gorilla sitting there. Making the case for funding that idea vs some other idea is going to be kind of hard.

Not really...

1 God of War game in a half decade doesn't exactly indicate a saturated environment.

Lots of games double down on historical and fantasty settings that are commonplace. Not sure why Ancient Greece should be off limits because of a couple of other games. More importantly the latest God of War (which is a good game) was set in a Norse Mythology setting not Ancient Greece.

The older God of War games which were QTE garbage fests were awful.

I stand corrected, I assumed the hate was for the new God of War which if I would have stopped to think would have realized the setting is not comparable.

I still don't hate the old games but I can certainly see how others can get there alot easier then the new one lol.

That's funny, because I've been saying for weeks now that AC Origins is basically a Witcher game.

That trailer really piqued my interest. I haven't played an AC game since Black Flag. This one seems to wrap in ship combat, army (or at least small unit) stuff, and the traditional AC lone wolf stuff. Unless half of that stuff was just for cut scenes, I think I may pick this one up.

What it lacked was a real sense that your choices have weight. I felt like choices in Origins really were be evil be good. Some of the choices in The Witcher were rough. I agonized. In Origins it was be evil or be good. There wasn't a lot of subtlety.

Yeah, it's more a witcher game in the gameplay and exploratory feel than the story parts. Were there even any choices in Origins? I don't remember any.

Origins doesn't have any choices that have a significant effect on the world. Odyssey supposedly does, including decisions that affect your interaction with NPCs.

Jonathan Dumont, creative director of AC Odyssey mentioned in a Reddit AMA today that physical copies of the game will have a reversible cover with Alexios on one side and Kassandra on the other.

He also said that Odyssey will have more content than Origins. I'm not sure that's a good thing.

As somebody currently making my way through Origins, I can safely say that it is not.

Reversible covers, yay! When I got Mass Effect 3, I was so happy to flip to cover to show off FemShep.

As somebody who recently finished 100 hours of Origins, I can safely say it might be.

If "more content" means more scripted stuff and more variety in the filler and open world repeated activities, that's great for everyone! If it's just more of the same quality of scripted stuff and more of the same kind of side stuff from Origins, that's fine for me! I really liked the loops of the side stuff in Origins. It was a good kind of low friction and mindless for me. But I get that it didn't work as well for many.
