Starfield - Bethesda Next Big IP

Starfield, the long-rumored Bethesda sci-fi role-playing game, finally has a release trailer!

.....

And nothing else!

Let the baseless speculation begin!

Let the baseless speculation begin!

The internet will go crazy over it doing a passable job at all the things Elite: Dangerous has been doing spectacularly for years, and never realize what they were missing.

All joking aside, it will probably be a lot closer in base design to No Man's Sky though. Maybe with a bit less procedural infinity, and a bit more awkward looking and awkwardly animated NPCs talking at you.

Please tell me no one got excited or clapped during that teaser.

I got excited, and my GF clapped - does that count?

It could be...anything at this point. I think Bethesda has a nice shot at making a space RPG that is more on the roleplaying a character side than on the pilot a ship side, but who knows what they're going for at this point.

I mean, I'll probably play it, whatever they end up making.

Skyrim with laserswords / Fallout with (more) rayguns!

As long as it's Skyrim/Fallout in space, I'm in.

Maybe they can do something like Mass Effect and have a base, but be able to travel "anywhere."

Edit: Stengahaussered!

Works for me.

Honestly a lot places of fallout three operated as separate islands, what with the subway tunnels beeing the only way to get connected to certain areas, so what about an open island hopping game? Have each world be a separate island with its own little place to interact with, and have some procedures so that things from one island/world Interact with each other.

Instead of subway tunnels it's jump gates. Though it'd be hilarious if their solution to riding a spaceship was like their solution to riding in a subway train.

First third of the game shows promise, but is janky as hell.
Second third is sublime.
Final third is OK, but sh*ts the bed entirely at the end.

So Mass Effect Andromeda?

Luckily Bethesda's game-play style works better for that kind of thing than Mass Effect's does so it could be cool.

I like space games. So maybe

Given their other games, I don't expect a lot of direct piloting of spacecraft. Actually I don't expect any direct piloting of spacecraft.

So, at the 15-19 seconds point of the teaser there is text visible at the bottom left corner. You can't see it all, but an obvious guess is that it reads "Constellation" and there's some kind of logo. Is this a hint to something? I can't think of anything else Bethesda related, but there must be some meaning for them to include it.

That is what they are calling this revision of their 20 year old game engine

If they wanted to have a wide variety of different places, to show your typical sci-fi thing about lots of different civilizations meeting, but not fly in space, they could set it on a ring world.

Or a Dyson Sphere.

Baseless speculation time: What will be the release date?

October 10, 2019

Fall of 2024.

Two or three years away is my guess

2020 at the earliest. Probably 2021 or 2022.

The spring after the next gen consoles launch.

This is laughably easy*. Simply rip the Commander Shepard setup.. space marshal with broad authority to toss jerks headfirst outta airlocks. Naturally, there'd be a bunch of alien races (and humans -- ho hum) to choose from. See Bethesda, I'm already sold. Go capitalize on all the folks that (think) they want to both stick it to BioWare and have their cake and eat it too (cough, me included... where do I preorder my NewMass?)

*first world entitlement yadda yadda and all

December 14, 2020. My guess is Starfield will release on a day of some astronomical significance. According to the Astronomy Calendar of Celestial Events, there will be 2 events:

December 13, 14 - Geminids Meteor Shower. The Geminids is the king of the meteor showers. It is considered by many to be the best shower in the heavens, producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak.
December 14 - Total Solar Eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the Sun, revealing the Sun's beautiful outer atmosphere known as the corona. The path of totality will only be visible in parts of southern Chile and southern Argentina.

(southern Chile and southern Argentina...but still!)

Asking the important questions;

If I buy this PC:

Will it be able to play this game?

If you get angry at the game, then you must yell "Staaaaaaarfieeeeeeeeeeeld!" in your best Jon Arbuckle voice.

This is the first new IP from them in 25 years. I’m kind of excited about that, because it allows them to start a new mythos from ground up with no previous baggage.

I thought it was in the Fallout universe, is it a wholly separate dealio?

Completely separate, new thing.
