Dauntless Catch-All

Pages

I just received an email notice that Dauntless - the upcoming free-to-play PC only Monster Hunter-like has finally hit open beta starting this Thursday, May 24th. As someone who has watched and occasionally dipped a toe into the waters of the Monster Hunter series, but always found the games, and more specifically the combat controls, to be a bit shallow and clunky, I've been following Dauntless' development since it first appeared on my radar a couple of years ago. I hope to see a few of you in the beta, and game gods willing, in the years to come!

Oh, sweet. I have been waiting for this. I got caught up in the monster Hunter jype but really just wanted it in PC. Until they release the PC version I was going to check this out.

I got accepted into the beta about three months ago and stepped in for a hunt or two. It didn't have the polish that I would hope, and like Monster Hunter, the systems are not terribly transparent or intuitive. Feels like it has the potential, but I wonder if it can compete with MH World.

Well, it IS still beta. So, time will tell.

Been looking forward to seeing more of this too. Not a fan of betas these days though. When is it supposed to be released?

Don't believe they have given a hard date yet, but in several interviews back in Jan/Feb, they said "Early 2018". So, I would expect it to be a full release in the next month or two.

Open beta begins today at 10am pacific.

Checked this out today, seems pretty fun. Is there a GWJ guild or anything?

I hope to get the rig up and running and give this a go!

No guild that I’m aware of. So far, this post hasn’t garnered much interest. To be honest, from the little bit I’ve played, I’m even cooler on this than I was on the Monster Hunter World beta. That game has actually come quite a ways and I have several friends who play. So, I ended up buying it and pop in from time to time. It is more of a social thing though and will never be a time sink for me.

As I said in a previous post, time will tell how well Dauntless comes together and whether I will invest very much time in the future.

we've had multiple threads on this already.

IMO the game is very weak and not worth playing. It never got better during the alpha/beta and from what i've seen of the reviews it never stepped up and improved itself.

Arise!

I jumped in last night hoping it was Monster Hunter without all the fiddly bullsh*t and it seems like that's exactly what Dauntless is!

I'm not sure there is a strong case for Dauntless co-existing beside Monster Hunter World other than I feel like Dauntless is more pick up and play rather than having to relearn from scratch like I would for MHW after not playing for some months.

So it scratches that itch without needing to play like a religion. I'll see how it goes and hit me up for a hunt if you see me in-game.

I’m having tons of fun with it. I enjoy the relaxed and easy way the game gets you into killing big monsters with other people. I had issues with MHW but ironically this is getting me to ponder giving that another go. So far there is good variety with various weapons and combos and the combat reminds me a bit of Dark Souls meets MH.

I was going to give it a try over the weekend but there were massive queues every time. I’ll wait until that is all sorted out.

It sounds like there is even less focus on it being soloable than Monster Hunter, is that true?

I'm in a similar boat. Might try again this weekend or next and see if it's easier to get in. Until then, there's still plenty of other stuff to play.

In sharp contrast to the queues mentioned on this week's podcast, I was able to download it on PS4 last night and launch right in. With cross-platform play enabled, I was able to link my PS4 account with my old beta PC account and started right where I left off. Unfortunately, there was a ton of lag issues and my character was rubber-banding all over the town to the point it was almost impossible to accomplish anything.

Right now, it doesn't look like it's improved and/or progressed much since the PC Beta, but I'm still interested in the idea of a casual gamers Monster Hunter. I'll give it a go again once the initial excitement dies down and they've had time to nail down their server performance.

I've been having a great time with this since the console launch. I sat down to sample it on launch day and ended up playing for four hours straight. Then the server issues landed, and I had a bit of trouble there for a few days. Still, I've been having a ball.

It's an online multiplayer game. Full stop. You can solo fights, but it's really not the point. You're encouraged right off the hop to play with other people, and the whole structure of the game assumes you're playing with other players.

Dauntless is to Monster Hunter World as Fortnite is to PUBG. It's deliberately a more casual, less involved, less complicated affair. That'll put some people off of it, and that'll draw some people to it. There's no reason at all the two can't coexist unless people are bothered by similar games for different audiences.

The combat is good.. that's the main draw for me.. it never feels cheap when I mess up and when I do something cool it feels like I did it. Weapons are different enough that each one forces you to play a different style and approach combat to maximize your efficiency.

Also, three cheers for whoever decided to give the player and the team individual ranks after a hunt. There have been times I've walked away from a rough hunt with an S+ personal rank and a D team rank where I could feel good about my contributions.

I usually know when I'm not playing well, so getting a lower rank than the team rank just tells me what I already know. But it is nice to see that I'm never quite as bad as I think I am.

Is it good as determining how well you did? MMOs trying to rank your contribution often fails miserably.

The best I can say is that the ranks line up fairly well with my self-assessment. The biggest complaint I see about them is that being the highest damage dealer doesn't ensure that you get the highest rank; it factors in more than just DPS.

I should also say that the after-fight ranks seem to be entirely informational. To the best of my knowledge, they don't affect the rewards you get from a fight at all.

There is some variability in the orbs that I get outside the bonus for Patrols.. I felt that was tied to performance but I could be wrong.. I've seen anywhere from 10 to 19 orbs awarded for a Patrol plus the 10 bonus.

You can pick up extra orbs during a fight when parts are broken.

Ah, at least any problems wont really matter. Just nice information then.

mind blown.. I've never noticed or seen items in a fight that can be picked up.. I mean outside the power ups skills can create... or those radiant gems from those mobs.

Clock, are you picking up groups from the GWJ Discord? I might jump in this evening if I can find some fellow Goojers to run with. I seem to be becoming more and more of a social gamer in my old age.

Just jumped in to this. I'm Astyrith on epic if people want to connect.

Asterith, I sent you an invite. I'm Sundown88 on Epic.

I played the first few hunts this evening with randoms and had fun with it. So far I've only used the sword, axe, and hammer, and I think I like the axe so far; it hits hard, but also gets out much faster than the hammer. And charging up the heavy attack and landing it is incredibly satisfying. I also like the speed of the hunts.

I downloaded this again to see what's changed with the recent launch after trying it quite a while ago during beta.

I'm not sure how much I'll play it long term, but I'll keep an eye out on Discord whenever I load it up again to see if anyone is playing.

I admire things about it. I also have gripes with it. It does not feel as good or seem to have the depth of Monster Hunter, but they follow that formula very closely in most ways and I've had some fun with it.

I've not played much solo and some of the monsters definitely don't seem like they'd be much fun that way, but random groups online can make it hard as well if other players don't know what they're doing.

It still seems like early stuff goes by pretty fast, and then you can hit a bit of a wall. I in particular found the jump from +5 to +6 /7 equipment (jumping from tier 7 to tier 8/9 monsters) awkward.

Some things I found useful at that point if anyone is interested:

Spoiler:

Drask armor parts can be upgraded to +7 with just normal Drask parts.

Valomyr armor, which you just get access to at that point, looked pretty expensive to upgrade given limited sources of the main orb type it requires (which is different than other armors up to that point).

Of the four initial Dire monsters you gain access to, I found Firebrand Charrogg and Moonreaver Shrike the most manageable.

Valomyr is also not too bad to far; almost kind of an "event" style hunt that's a bit different.

Tier 8/9 stuff still hits pretty hard when you get to it, even if you meet or slightly exceed power levels. Get good at dodging stuff. And Repeaters.

Started this last weekend. Looking for a hunting crew. Psycotoaster on epic.
