Great news...with a bit of bad news

"The 3DS version of the game - which was a complete remake of the Japanese PS4 version, played in both pixel art and 3D versions across the console's two screens - will not be localised at any point.

As for the Switch version, things are slightly less clear. "We are also developing the Switch version for Europe and North America," reads Square Enix's statement, "but development is expected to take a long time from a technological standpoint as well, so we still have a long way to go until its release".

I’m not surprised about the 3DS version. It’s too bad, but also not a shock that the Switch version will be coming later. People who are real excited will go PS4 but I think the Switch version will still do well.

Well, I already knew this to be the case, but I won’t get through all the DQ games before 11 is released.

I’ve played 4-6, but I don’t see me playing 7-9 before September.

I was planning getting it for the Switch, but since that version is delayed and I rarely have time to play it anymore I’ll probably end up going with PS4.

I prefer the Switch but I know I won't be able to wait months for it to come over. Heck if they just would have said "later in 2018" I might have considered waiting but it seems clear that it will be 2019 before it comes out.

I am going to play the sh*t out of this!

Opening movie (not all that helpful)

Gameplay video (sort of helpful)

The DQ series hits my juvenile funny bone just right, going back to DQ8. Can't wait.

"We don't want to tell you when the Switch version will come because we want you to buy the PS4 version now and double dip in 2019 on the Switch."

Because my game playing time on the PS4 is *very* limited I may wait for the Switch version.

That said, really nice to finally for real know its coming.

Oh man, the noise when you win a battle is piercing. I hope they tone that down.

Wow, looks like DQ 8

I'm just happy to see Square seems to now be committed to day and date PC releases, even for their much more traditionally console focused properties.

I feel like there's a fair bit to unpack about this announcement. Like, I get that the 3DS is riding out into the sunset but it's still seeing support from Nintendo and Atlus into 2019 and the system's sales haven't cratered yet (2017 was a better year than 2016 by a small margin). Did the DQ7 and DQ8 remakes on 3DS under-perform in the US? Are Nintendo or Square-Enix thinking holding out another year or two for the Switch would be a better use of their resources? Did NoA not want to deal with the localization effort? Was cartridge size to blame?

Switch not coming out for a while off makes sense since they're still working on the PS4 build for the Western release. And then there's the optimization work needed to get it to run on the Switch, optimize for whatever cartridge size they're using, etc. However, it's bizarre to me that they're targetting the Switch version for the Western markets which would imply there's no current plans to re-release it in Japan. Which seems really odd given how well the Switch is selling in Japan and their culture being a lot more accepting of portable gaming. Maybe they're thinking a Switch version would have a harder time selling given how quickly it dropped off the sales charts and there's already a portable version there?

So weird.

I'll likely hold out for the Switch version as well. That'll give me plenty of time to think about starting VII or VIII and I feel like having the option of off-TV play will be worth the wait.

It's designed to be a throw-back to the NES games. I doubt they'll change it that much.

Part of this is due to the PS4 being a pre-built X86 PC so it's probably easier for them to port it (unlike the PS3 with it's Cell architecture). Also, this is mostly something they seem to be doing for the Western and Chinese markets since PC gaming still isn't a big thing in Japan.

Since it has been out for awhile in Japan I came across a review.

*Spoilers! Really don't watch if you want to discover the story. Seriously! I even stopped watching after a few minutes. *

I forgot this thread existed!

I'm in the process of reviewing what all this game is about now that we have a release date. I'm mostly curious if there's enough changes to the basic structure to pick it up at launch or wait for the Switch version.

I thought this was quite a good video for, well, everyone. They cover the new to DQ side and versed in DQ side.

Dragon Quest XI hands-on – incredible localisation and the biggest world yet

Square-Enix’s other mega-selling RPG series, Dragon Quest, is set to drop it’s eleventh installment in Europe later this year.

Originally released in Japan back in 2017, it has taken some time to reach these shores, and with good reason: Square-Enix has made some substantial tweaks for its Western release. Now don’t panic, this isn’t one of those situations where content has been removed (like with some of the Yakuza titles). Instead, we’re getting a raft of improvements.

First, and by far the most impressive, is that the Western release will have voice acting for its major characters and cutscenes. The Dragon Quest games have a reputation for some sterling voice work, such as Ricky Grover’s rough cockney portrayal of Yangus in Dragon Quest VIII. They bring a real extra dimension to the already bold cast of characters. There’s no doubt been some chatter about the West just not having the patience to read text boxes, but this is a brilliant addition to the game.

We had the chance to play two areas at a recent preview event: the very beginning, which takes place in the hero’s home village of Cobblestone; and across the grassy fields to the Capital city of Heliodor, where they must speak to the King about the fact that they are the reincarnation of The Luminary, a legendary hero who has saved the world in the past.

New E3 trailer

There's not enough chatter, folks. Game releases on pc 9/4/18, the day after Labor Day, which is a bit of a timing bummer. Anybody found a good pre-order deal?

I believe you can still get 20% off physical version on amazon until the 28th. I ended up canceling my preorder, as much as I want to get it, I just don't have enough time right now for 100 hour jrpg.

Thanks, that's worth looking into.

I was sad to realize this. I WFH, so the game is going to show up sometime before 5pm... Maybe I take 9/5 off!

I was seriously thinking about it, if not for the fact that someone else is already taking that day off... At any rate, I actually got Steam Link working really well (!) at my new place, played some DQ Heroes 2 tonight to get gooing back into the spirit.

I completely forgot all about this coming out next month and already pre-ordered Spider Man. I really shouldn’t buy both so I’m going to try and hold out for the Switch version. What I need from you fine forum members here is just lots of talk about how awesome it is so I’ll have no choice but to go out and buy it anyway.

I preordered DQ XI earlier this week. My excitement to play it, and to play God of War, will definitely be my biggest obstacles to finishing Pillars of Eternity for the CRPG Club.

I’d be interested in this, but just worried it’s coming out at a bit of an awkward time. I’ll most likely skip at launch, I have a feeling quite a few others will too.

I preordered a physical version for $48 or whatever at Amazon (for PS4). I don't want to put a disc in, but that price was too tempting.

If you're considering taking the day off to play the PC version I'd counsel you to not do that as they still haven't bothered to tell anyone thesystem reqs yet. People are getting nervous that the PC version might get delayed and based on the track record of S-E with PC I'd probably bet that if it doesn't get delayed it might end up a terrible port at launch. I wouldn't use a vacation day to find out it runs at 5 fps on your rig until the game gets patched...

For what it's worth, it looks like the Amazon discount is only for the PS4 version so there'd be little benefit to pre-ordering the PC version anyway.

The Kotaku review is terrific! Utterly hilarious and informative. I was tentatively interested before watching it, but after, I ended up pre-ordering.

The Waypoint review was hilariously bad if you ask me, but contains some of the progressive items some people are interested in.

The flipside is the guy is the *only* person I've seen, reviewers or not, who complained of difficulty spikes. That's because, well, this:

With the ability to avoid monsters, you can and will arrive at bosses disgustingly underleveled, simultaneously settling unto a noob’s nightmare and a speedrunner’s buffet table.

The Waypoint reviewer said early on he is a mainline story gamer, which is exactly how not to play a DQ game. You're meant to take your time, talk to people and enjoy your stay. It doesn't always work for me, much like a Falcom Trails game, as sometimes it can be horribly boring. But when the stories and characters come together you get some quality and charming moments.

Anyway, the game looks amazing, visually. And that's why I pre-ordered for PS4, but really only because of the Amazon discount (RIP).

The rest of the reviews are either glowing and say this is one of the best DQ games or are glowing but hedged with the caveat "it's still a DQ game, so if that isn't your cup of tea, avoid."

Yeah, that Kotaku vid is a hoot. Entertaining even if you're not planning on picking up the game.

With Divinity: OS2 DE dropping tomorrow, I'll likely be pushing DQ11 to the winter season. It should be a great pick-me-up during the cold months. Can't wait to eventually dive in as the game looks glorious.

That Kotaku guy really likes DQ. I went ahead and pre-ordered the Steam edition, something I never do, on the off chance it'll drop early enough for me to play it before work next week.

Reviewer seems disappointed the 11th installment of a Dragon Quest game is still a Dragon Quest game.

You can't really trust the opinion of an unabashed fanboy or a reviewer that dislikes the series who was inexplicably chosen to review it; the truth is somewhere in between and it seems like a classic.

Oh god, is this coming out already?!?! I still have Octopath Traveler to finish. I know I should wait for the Switch version (whenever that is coming), but the early reviews look really good (I'm a Dragon Quest fan, so an old school Dragon Quest game with modern graphics is exactly what I'm after).
