Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

Saw DP2 yesterday and really liked it. I like the first one a lot more overall. I laughed more, but there was more meta stuff I appreciated in this one. Especially...

Spoiler:

The ending. I started laughing as soon as I heard, "If I Could Turn Back Time".

Possibly the best part of the "Guy who can't draw feet joke:" Liefeld almost certainly just stole Domino's power from Longshot.

Finally saw Deadpool 2 on Sunday. My take; Deadpool 1 was a movie in that it had at least some degree of a plot, some character development, and felt like it took you from point A to point B, albeit in an offensively hilarious way. Deadpool 2 was a series of jokes and gags strung together with the barest elements of an actual plot, and, while it was funny and I enjoyed it, I remained very conscious throughout the movie that it was trying very, very hard. It was fun, but whatever my limit of Trying Hard to be Self-Aware is, it kind of blew past it.

Great gags, though. The X-Force bit was spectacular in every possible way. Domino immediately became one of my favorite supporting characters in all the Marvel movies, and the fact she's clearly better at everything than Wade without even trying was hilarious. And, yeah, the "can't draw feet joke" was probably the best bit.

The casting was terrific, but I don't know the extent of Domino's abilities. Who would win in a fight, Thanos or Domino?

Well, she would have survived Infinity War for sure.

I usually get this feeling or awareness of the feeling in sequels.

Guardians 2 was for me the worst offender.
I guess my brain just shut itself off for DP2 because I hadn't realized how random and almost disconnected is Act 2 from Act 1 and Act 3 from all the movie until you brought it up.

DP2 plot is "save the kid because otherwise he turns evil." Lots of sidetracking and gags and whatevs that are the meat on this thing, but it's simple enough that I recall it. I don't recall the plot from the first movie. Some kind of revenge thing. Maybe.

Mr Pool thought Francis could undo turning him into an avocado. He thought he needed to before going back to Vanessa.

Into an avocado that had sex with an older, more disgusting avocado.

There's probably a cut of that scene that's 3 hours long and I'm sad that we won't ever get it.

HOLY sh*t THIS TRAILER

I NEED THAT MOVIE NOW

I need that in my life.

This headline from io9 sums up comics for me completely.

The Hulk Is Back From the Dead, and More Dangerous Than Ever

No one dies forever, great cataclysmic events are just to sell this month's run. It is just "Days of our Lives," "General Hopital," "Dallas" for kids. That isn't bad really but it does make me shake my head at people's shock of who died in the Avengers movie.

I like that movie and wish to subscribe to its newsletter.

Sweet. Mother.

(I'm only quoting so that the trailer is here again. I may or may not be salivating.)

I didn't realized he had died. I just found out last year that Wolverine died.

He's back now too. And I don't mean the old man version. Regular-ass Wolverine is back.

And the answer on why they do this is illuminated...

I'm now queueing up civil war 2 (didn't know that was a thing either) and will buy the Wolverine ones as well.

Ohhhhhh I'm not sure you want to do that. Marvel has done a lot of bad events, but, man, Civil War 2 was terribad. Hulk's death was . . . largely pointless, but at least it led to Amadeus Cho as Hulk, who had some fun stuff. Wolverine's death was in, not shockingly, the Death of Woverine (which was actually pretty good), and led to Laura Kinney's All-New Wolverine stint, which was just so, so great.

It's become my "thing" with Marvel; I can't stand the big events, and I don't read the big titles (Avengers/Spider-Man/X-Men). The new Wolverine or Thor, Kate Bishop Hawkeye, Gwenpool . . . all the new characters are just fun again instead rehashing the same old crap over and over.

MD, can you explain Gwenpool for us, please?

I read her first run and it's good but I just don't understand the character as a concept.

She's Gwen Poole, who has come from our world, where she was a huge comics reader. Her only superpower is genre awareness, and at various times she calls Thor "Jane" or goes to see Miles Morales at his house, because she knows he's Spider-Man. She becomes a mercenary after managing to defeat MODOK (again, thanks to genre awareness), and at one point tells her new buddy Batroc (how can you not love a comic with Batroc) that he's a comic character, and asks him to recall his life before his first appearance vs. Captain America.

It takes a lot of the self-awareness stuff that gets so grating with Deadpool plus a lot of the standard anti-hero tropes, and plays around with them in a hilarious and charming way. I figured at first she was just going to be Chick Deadpool, but it's way better than that.

She and her team actually run into Deadpool T one point where they're trapped in Murderworld, and her annoying Arcade because she identifies it immediately was kind of great. Her and her team then take up the traditional roles of D&D characters doing a dungeon crawl to escape, until they meet the dread beast of the dungeon; Deadpool. Who is defeated with, of course, genre awareness.

Earth 1218. What kind of nerd are you?

With a new power it seems... Claws can heat up now...

Reminder: Cloak and Dagger premieres tonight on Freeform.

? Ok I missed that.

I liked the first two episodes of Cloak and Dagger. A bit slow but I wouldn't call that a bad thing.

Just watched the first one tonight, and, yeah, it was pretty good. I will say that it was much darker than I anticipated, but that's OK as the initial previews of this looked awful. Definitely will keep watching it.

So... Legion finale. I mostly liked it but I kind of have the same issue the AV club reviewer has.

David is a real sh*theel now.
