Solo : Official SPOILER discussion thread

Gonna be some spoilers in here Thursday when I see the movie

Saw it, loved it. It was everything I wanted a Solo movie to be and then some. Minor quibble - was the whole film dark and muddy, or was that just my theater?

L3 was, to me, the breakout character, and I really hope she gets more time in the novels/comics. I've already read Last Shot, but I want more!

I also enjoyed it!

It's weird how the movie that no one wanted kind of has everything we wanted in a Star Wars movie. I really enjoyed it, and I didn't expect to.

I didn't think so, but very little of it is set in broad daylight, right? Donald Glover, while good, seemed to be ducking in and out of a Billy Dee Williams impression from scene to the scene.

I thought it was fine. There really wasn't anything unique or exceptionally compelling, but it was competent.

Well, seen it twice now. Enjoyed it each time. There are definitely some small silly bits, like Maul turning on his lightsaber. But I enjoyed the overall story. I like how they brought a lot of legends stuff into canon like the maw near Kessel. Han was believable and I really liked how they showed Han and Chewie becoming friends.

Just saw it and need to see it again. I agree with the muddy feel of the film. Just felt like it was smudged the whole way through.

I honestly came off of a long three days. I was in and out the whole way through it. Looking forward to making sense of it all.

Second viewing in a packed house at the Drafthouse was a much better crowd vibe, and the projector was better calibrated so the film popped much more.

Pun intended?

My hot take - while I can see a strong argument that Last Jedi was a better movie in terms of cinematography and risk taking, Solo was a lot more fun to watch.

So, I know they're not beholden to the old EU, but I couldn't help but notice...

Spoiler:

...Qi'ra's another call back to Bria Tharen (like Jyn was in Rogue One) and Crimson Dawn's essentially Black Sun, but with Maul in charge instead of Xizor. I wonder if Crimson Dawn is what Palpatine wanted Maul to go do after his final appearance in Clone Wars.

I saw Solo today. It wasn't as bad as many said it is, I enjoyed it. But, it isn't very high on my favorite Star Wars movie list. In comparison, Rogue One was amazing and my favorite SW film after Empire Strikes Back, this one seemed kinda of flat. I can see how Howard had issues with the tone of the movie.

Pros:

Spoiler:

Great acting from most of the cast with standouts being Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke.
The pace was nice and brisk, no dull moments or flat spots.
Some very beautiful scenes
The train action scene was very well done
Chewie!

Cons:

Spoiler:

The tone for Han Solo just seemed off. He needed more rogue with his heart of gold.
The new droid fell flat, both me and my friend hated it. (and why do we need a new cute droid for every movie?)
The one liners fell flat, for the most part.
I felt adding Darth Maul at the end was cheap. A toss to the fanbois. I felt they should have left his identity mysterious.

Seen it and liked it. Best part was L3 and worse part was Maul. Mual seemed to be a tack on with no purpose but to show off his saber pee pee. The pacing was pretty good. I was never bored. Han just happening to find his old girl in a big galaxy was kind of dumb but that is star wars.

I think it is more of a reveal of things to come. Kind of like Marvel movies adding something after the credits. The only thing I didn't like was that he lit his lightsaber. Seemed kind of an odd thing to do. Han finding Qi'ra was a movie cliche that every movie pretty much does these days. At least there was no revival ending.

Saw it...it was a perfectly ok movie, but it won't be a classic.

when I think about it a day later there are several scenes that were very cool and neat but somehow they didn't add up to a great movie. It fell flat somehow in a way that I can't quite put my finger on.

And I like they're taking the next logical step from the cameos from Rebels in Rogue One by adding more connective tissue between the films and television. It's something that didn't really pan out all that much in Marvel because reasons.

I did almost tear up (okay I really did) when the asteroid music from Empire started playing and when Chewie first took the co-pilot seat.

There were many lines by Donald Glover that you'd have been hard pressed to convince me that Billy Dee Williams did not dub in. He was spot on in his delivery.

I hope this movie is successful enough for a sequel of some sort. I love seeing Chewie as a primary character, and I really do want to see more of this pre-ANH world.

My 8 year old and I saw it on Friday, I snagged him out of school early. Kind of our tradition for certain movies. It was ok, not great but worth my time and money. Lots of little moments that made the film enjoyable. I could go for a Lando or a Boba Fett movie.

Well they did announce the next movie was gonna be a Boba Fett movie last week.

I think the guy who played Han didn't really connect for me. Like someone wearing a Han skin suit trying his best. Not trying to get down on him because filling Han Solo's shoes ain't easy. Just wish that key element had landed better for me. So hard to divorce key characters from Harrison Ford.

Pretty much my reaction.

The set pieces were outstanding, the overall story... wasn’t.

Disney should take a cattle prod to anyone who says that there should be a romance in a Star Wars movie. It’s always bad.

This one fell flat for me. I enjoyed it just fine but as soon as it was over my first thought was, okay, where are we going to go eat dinner. Another thing that was kind of telling for me was that none of us talked about it while waiting on our food at the restaurant. It just didn't stick.

The first time I remember seeing Alden Ehrenreich was in his role in the Cohen brothers movie Hail, Caesar! He seemed like the weakest link in that movie and I got the same feeling here. I can't put my finger on it but something about him just doesn't work for me. Personal, I know, but I just don't get that feeling of natural charisma that you see with so many other actors. Again, it was fine, but this isn't one I'm looking forward to seeing again.

I know they've said they signed him on to play 3 movies as Han Solo but now that they're starting to dub this a bomb, with an 84 million dollar opening weekend, who knows? Estimates are that this was a 250 to 300 million dollar movie and that it'd need to earn 500 million to break even. At this point I guess they're hoping for really strong physical sales. I definitely read the Maul reveal at the end as a setup for part 2 but, as much as I like the character of Maul, I'm not sure I want to see a second Solo movie.

Those numbers don't seem right. Articles I am seeing show it did 105m in the US and 150m international. The cost was 250m with reshoots. Note that TFA only did 248m opening weekend and it is the main series, as opposed to a Star Wars Story.

Also, since it was released in summer it had to compete against a couple other movies that drew in 60 million this weekend.

Also (also) Star Wars (through Disney) is probably the only franchise where losing a little bit of money or not being insanely profitable (I'm sure this movie will be profitable) is not as much a factor. The BRAND (TM) is super important so the movies are not a goal on to itself but also a vehicle for other SW products like toys, resorts, vacation cruises ,etc, etc.

I agree with all of this...

Ah, looks like the 80-85 was 3 day weekend and the 105 is 4 day holiday weekend.

Yeah, just saw another article that mentioned that. Explains my confusion.

I just got back from seeing it, and liked it quite a bit as a heist movie in the Star Wars universe. As expected Donald Glover was great as Lando. At this point, I think the "Star Wars Story" line is pretty much kicking the snot out of the main line movies - this was so much better than Last Jedi.

Just got back from seeing it. Alden Ehrenreich was better than I was expecting, but I was expecting something pretty bad. On the other hand, Donald Glover was exactly as expected, but my expectations were high! Thandie Newton was great, would've loved more of her in the movie. If only her character had switched places with Woody Harrelsons...

Maul certainly seems a set-up for a new film. Would be a pretty stupid inclusion otherwise (not that that stops anyone). Rogue One referenced a hyperdrive tracking technology which then became a major plot point of TLJ. TLJ had a focus on Hans dice that seemed a little weird until the Solo spin-off. So, more Maul in store for us? Seems an odd priority. Either way, I imagine that anybody who hasn't got some knowledge of the recent cartoons will be scratching their head at how he managed to survive being cut in half 20-30 years earlier.

Agreed. My wife commented after the movie was "why do all the robots have to be sassy".

I hope that the Maul cameo isn't a prelude into the next Solo movie, but instead into another star wars story. Maybe his own. The line "Kid, I've flown from one end of the galaxy to the other. I've seen some strange stuff, but I have never seen anything to make me believe there's one all-powerful force controlling everything. There is no mystical energy field that controls my destiny.".

A run in with Maul would probably make him a believer.

Saw it over the weekend and I was happily surprised. My wife and I LOVED the movie. Maybe because I had really low expectations, but it just clicked for me. There was nothing really innovative or surprising, but at the end of the day it was just a whole lot of fun. The acting (all around), music, and set pieces were a perfect bit of summer movie fun that I remember when I was a kid.

There were definitely bits that didn't work - like Maul. But overall the good far far outweighed the bad. The best thing I could say is that I would actually want a sequel to this movie to see more Han, Chewie, and the Falcon.
