Streamers with jobs

So, I have started playing around with streaming my playthrough of Skyrim on the XBox One.

I am recording fine, and not having any problems.

Or at least I wasn't until I tried to record voice along with the video. When I was watching my stream (as I was playing) on my Twitch Channel, my voice was going fine. However, I am listening to the playback, and my voice did not save with the video, neither on the Twitch video or the exported Youtube video.

I'm relatively new to the whole streaming game despite decades spent watching it grow and grow. I've been setting up my Twitch channel and I thought I'd share the following tutorial: This YouTube guide on Using Audio Compression and Ducking - OBS Studio Tutorial only has a few hundred views but it's really well explained.

I've got a nice wee audio set up now with my mic and my friends mic "ducking" the game audio when we talk. I used to spend hours manually tweaking the audio volumes on recorded game footage to this and now I've got it running in real-time(!). It's totally worth checking out if you aren't already using compressors/duckers.

I don't usually stream much live but I'm uploading my game sessions and Let's Plays to YouTube. I've subscribed to any Goodjer's Twitch/Youtube channels that have been posted so far.

I’ve been wondering if we have a list of Goodjers who have reached Affiliate or Partner status? When you get Twitch Prime (with Amazon Prine, great deal deal in my book), you get a free subscription thrown in which can gift to an Affliate or Partner. I try to alternate who I send mine too, but I’m not sure I have a list (Teeny and Toanstation are the only ones I’m sure of).
Anyone else?

(I’d like to also thank here those of you who have sent yours my way in the past, I truly appreciate it)

Wait, what? I have a Twitch Prime account and I know about free games and in game-loot but I can gift a sub to a fellow Goodjer?

Edit: Ok, I understand now. They don’t communicate this very well.

Nice tutorial man, never even heard of ducking. Not sure if I'm gonna use it, but it's nice to know it's there.

Ducking is awesome and let's you stream with game audio AND talk when you want.

For Affilliate/Partner GWJ streams, I have: OmniVizioN, Eleima, BagelMageTV, and Teeny.

Woo! 50 followers! Now on the road to 100

Yeah, it looks intriguing. I use VoiceMeter Banana for my mixer, so I'll have to research ducking options for it.

If you're going to do anything beyond the simplest leveling, I'd recommend just getting a DAW and an interface that can pull audio in. I like OBS a lot, I hang out in their Discord and I'm working on some extensions for it, but its audio stack is just not where it needs to be, even with the obs-asio plugin. You can do it with the autoduck plugin, but you're going to end up redoing it later with a more featureful compressor in a DAW, and learning How To DAW tends to be pretty fun besides.

(We don't do audio ducking regardless, because I think that it's distracting, but we do some EQ and having an easy way to cough-button is handy. I run Lemur, which I control via my iPad, so I can be on-camera and messing with that stuff at the same time, with an Android tablet running my shamelessly-plugged StreamCopilot app.)

Independently of one another my friend and podcast co-host and I began thinking about streaming together every so often, and decided to start with Destiny 2's Warmind. This isn't something we're looking to turn into a big thing and are just experimenting with now, but I'm curious about feedback nonetheless. Nothing like "Get better gear" or "don't use PS4's default stream thing" or whatever because we're not looking to get partnered or anything.

Even so, if we're gonna stream we should try and be entertaining, and I feel like we didn't really do much interesting here. To me, the best part came about in the last mission when we began trying to figure out what made some of Destiny 1's expansions work and Destiny 2's lackluster thus far. That said, I dunno what most streams are like. So, any thoughts appreciated.

Personally, I think us doing a story-focused game for the first time-around was a bad idea as it gets periods where each person just shuts up. So if we continue streaming I'd like to choose games where we don't care about story or have already played and thus don't mind talking over cut-scenes.

I've got a month-long holiday between classes, so I've been streaming a lot more lately. I'm loving it! Really starting to get into Twitch culture and find a few similar streamers to chat to. The SHMUP community is honestly so lovely and supportive. I typically get 2-5 viewers, but they are typically very willing to give advice and cheer me on! In fact, I was watching somebody new and they decided to host a giveaway, I won a copy of Mushihimesama Futari, which I never thought I'd own because it sells for $80+ around here! I'm beyond amazed at this streamer's generosity (I feel like I should give a shoutout to his channel, so here it is).

Last night was great. On top of winning that game, I fixed up a nice overlay for my "learning Mushihimesama" stream. I figured out how to get a transparent background and slide my video beneath it -- I'm really happy how it turned out! To top it all off, one of my favourite streamers, and player who got me into these games from his STG Weekly series on YouTube followed me! I'm a little star struck!

Above is my fancy new overlay. It still gets a bit blurry when there is a lot happening on screen though. Any advice? It's perfectly clear with games that don't have as much movement.

Edit: Tried making the above into a template so I could apply it to other games. Need to tighten up the border, but I think I'm onto something. I cut out any bits near the middle to give it a nice 3D look, then slap the game's logo somewhere

So much nicer than just streaming the game with my face slapped on it somewhere.

Edit 2: Help, I have a problem. I'm really proud of this one though! Can't wait to actually play some R-Type.

These are really nice fella. I've not logged in for a while but I'd be up for seeing that R-type in action. That's a good pick, has potential to attract a wider audience (aka me) for the nostalgia.

Are you following a guide / template to get everything in the right position and size and putting together in Photoshop?

I didn't really get on with streaming from ps4. I've no idea how to do even start streaming on Windows, but I'd like to give it a go from the new laptop, if its powerful enough.

Couple quickies..

OBS the best for a beginner?

Can I use my Sony Golds on PC and work ok for the streams?

Thanks! I've barely touched R-Type but it fascinates me. Very excited to give it a spin. I'm not really using any template, I just took a screenshot of my usual setup and measured everything to fit over that. It helps that you can stretch and rearrange all video/chat sources on OBS though, I don't need to be very accurate.

I can't really help with your other questions, but I'd be happy to lend a hand with OBS if you go down that route

Cool, I'll give it a go.

R-type was an Amiga favourite of mine way back when. Post up when you're playing and I'll try and catch some.

That's purely a function of your video encoding bitrate. It looks like you're currently streaming around ~2500 for 720p60? I don't think it will be an issue with R-Type but for something busier like Mushihimesama you might want to bump up to 3000kbps or more.

Your overlays look beautiful, though!

Just posting for anybody who wants to drop by on Twitch, but I'll be doing an Extra Life fundraising stream for the better part of the day on the 26th. Definitely some multiplayer Stardew Valley, and we'll see what else crops up!

Wowza. Guys, I have NO idea how or why this occurred but apparently I had over 50 (according to Omni - 100 at one point) watching me play Star Trek Online.

In one random afternoon of streaming I magically hit that 3 viewer average achievement for affiliate.

I fully intend to follow through with the 7 days/8 hour requirements and get that affiliate gamer cred!

Thank you to anyone who has ever given advice, helped with setup, watched, auto-hosted, and anything else.

It’s a cool little achievement, getting closer to affiliate status. Even if I do nothing else with it, it feels cool! I like feeling cool.

So, throughout the weekend and next week - If you want to pop in and chat while I grind through STO, please do.

I have done streaming here and there, but I don't have the room for a camera right now ...

I watched for a bit Zoso while I worked from home the other day. I often put Twitch on the Apple TV while I’m mucking around with something else so if you see me but I don’t chat it’s because I can’t.

(Whoops, wrong thread! Sorry.)

Friends, with all the Drox Operative questions, I figured I'd stream a little for y'all. Discord: https://discord.gg/ZvY7dhk | Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/spacegamejunkie | YouTube: https://gaming.youtube.com/spacegame... | Mixer: https://mixer.com/spacegamejunkie

Your presence is truly appreciated, Tom! And you’ve described my primary twitch viewing habits as well. Very rarely get to chat as I’m usually wrangling kids.

I have restarted to stream, from my Ps4 at the moment, and maybe from my laptop since I upgraded my PC gaming rig.

Currently, I'm in Dragon Quest XI. 10 hours mark, and still love it.

Tho, I remembered there was communities. Could I get invited into those ?

Maybe the one from GamerswithJobs, and Gamer Parents ?

I know my kid want to see what is it like to stream. So I might jump in Duos, or not.

Thanks.

I believe you set it up on your end... set your community to gamerswithjobs, and you’re golden. Pretty sure, but I’ve been known to be wrong (don’t tell my wife ;P )

Oh Yeah ! Found it, thanks a ton !

Hey all,

Sometime lurker on this thread for a while now. And I've been the owner of a dormant Twitch account for even longer. Over the summer I started streaming my mobile game du jour, Raid: Shadow Legends.

Now that the M:TG Arena bug has bitten me, I've begun streaming my gameplay and plan to do so whenever I log on to the game at home. At some point, probably quite soon, I'll incorporate a proper microphone into the proceedings. Not quite ready to go full facial yet and I'm not sure I ever will.

As far as I know my Twitch channel is named after me, Maclintok

I hear great things about OBS and how it's so easy to use. Well, I can do you one better as I've been using D3DGear to do Youtube uploads for years now. The streaming capabilities to Twitch are working out great, too. It's more or less dummy-proof which is perfect for me.

Question for all you seasoned streamers: how do I get Twitch to archive my streams to my channel? Where are the clips found?

Anyone else have issues with uploading video? My video has been stuck on "Processing" for days now and there isn't even a way of cancelling it.

Hope it finally got "unstuck", Strangederby. When that happens for me, I just cancel and reupload again.

With the new year having rolled around, the Extra Life 2019 campaign has already been kicked off!

GWJ team for 2019 is right this way!

So every so often I consider trying to get into streaming. Right now it's difficult because I live in a house where I'm not guaranteed an evening of silence in the week, which is about what I'd aim for if I were to start streaming. I used to do streaming with Extra Life but until I'm back in my own place I dunno if I can do the 24-hour gaming thing.

I'm also not sure I'd be able to stream on any platform beyond PS4.

Now, my first question to all of you who stream is: why did you start? For me, be it YouTube or my blog or when I was writing for the front page, the primary desire was to reach out and communicate with others. With that in mind, I know I'm not an entertaining funny guy, at least not the sort that works well with streams and the Let's Play crowd. I also tend to get quiet with games I'm unfamiliar with, and don't really know how to comment on them. However, the idea of going through a game like Iconoclasts and discussing what I like about its designs or narrative is something that I think could work, because I'd be communicating something I love.

So I guess then my second question is: does this seem like enough? I know the answer is basically "do what you want to do" but I feel like I should have... something a bit more... I dunno. I just feel like my charisma score is in the negatives and don't know if I really ought to try the Streaming thing after all. But it's something that keeps crossing my mind, so might as well try it, right?

I also know there are people that will talk about this equipment and that gear and next thing you know you've spent $5,000 on a streaming set-up for... what? Hopes of partnership? I'll be lucky if anyone watches that's not my cousin. Nevertheless, it could be a good way for me to replay games I loved while talking design. I don't want it to replace my YouTube series, but sort of be a supplement.

I dunno. I'm kind of rambling and I guess trying to argue myself into it, and am looking for what other people get out of it. I imagine a bunch of you don't have fancy equipment, and I know a lot of you do it, but as someone that doesn't really watch streams themselves I'm trying to understand what the compulsion is other than "Well, everyone else does it".

I do it because I’d be playing the game anyway, and I like to hang out with people that like the same games... I say that like I have viewers

I was pretty active in another streamer’s channel (I started watching him over 2 years ago, playing Dark Souls) - he had a pretty consistent dozen viewers, and we were a pretty chatty bunch. A few of them stream, themselves - I feel like we all follow each other. They’re much better at it, than I am, but they pop in my stream when they can (they’re mostly UK, so... 6hr time difference means they don’t stay long). My stream is very empty 99% of the time - 2 viewers is a high number, and chat is non-existent.

I’m sure I’ve described my “style” before as - long periods of silence (maybe some muttering) punctuated by cries of “Noooo!” and/or profanity. It sounds like you have a much more interesting style - your podcast experience has given you the ability to “talk to no-one” - that people will actually stick around for.

As far as set-up, mine is laughable - single PC, older i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, GTX770, single 22” monitor, and an ancient Creative Labs plastic desk mic, and no cam. I use my phone to watch my own stream (audio only) so I can watch chat, but that’s not always successful (phone goes to sleep, or doesn’t seem to connect to chat, etc).

I’d say, just do it!

I started for Extra Life 2017.

Before you start aiming for a partnership, I'd say aim for affiliate first. Partnership is a looooong way ahead.
I'd say just sitting there and playing a game isn't going to cut it. I mean, I probably am not one to talk, because I don't have a really big viewership, but it's more about engaging with your audience, asking if they've played the game, what they think of it, etc.
Just my two cents, though.
