From Table to Tablet: iOS and Android Board Games Catch All

You ran out of time and it kicked you this morning. I messed up when I started the game. I thought the time limit I set was per turn and not overall time. If everyone wants I can kill the game and restart it with more time so people aren't running out of time.

Natus, shoptroll, pizzaddict: Do y'all see our Waterdeep game still? I got the "Your turn" notification this morning, but when I signed into the app, it informed me that I had no active online games?

I think several of us timed out. Pretty sure we went half a week without a turn, and the timer doesn't like that. Too bad, it was a good game!

I'm up for another stab at it!

I'm not sure why I timed out; I thought I'd been taking all of my turns fairly promptly, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm down for another go. I timed out because I was out on vacation and never confirmed one of my turns

Ok, I'll do another game but put as much time as I can this time

New game started!

I'm in!

Is there a list of good Board Game adaptations for a new tablet owner? So hard to keep up what is out there.

The adaptations of Ticket to Ride with a bunch of the alternate versions as IAPs, Ascension with each expansion as an IAP, and Race for the Galaxy with its first three expansions as IAPs are all VERY good adaptations. They are so good in fact that I have little desire to play the real life versions any more. Race has the added benefit of only the host needing to own the expansions you are using for the game. I believe Ticket to Ride and Ascension require all players to own all the add ins you are playing with, but both of those are cross platform with other platforms. I know that Ticket to Ride is cross platform with steam (maybe android) and that Ascension is cross platform with steam and Android. Also, I believe base Ascension is free on all platforms.

Star Realms and Summoner Wars are both decent translations especially after the most recent updates to Star Realms. However, I have played them far less. There also used to be a pretty good version of Battle Line/Schotten Totten out there but I don’t know if it works on the current version of iOS.

Just got WaterDeep. Wouldn't mind a game but I never played just went through the tutorial and watched a game of the boardgame.

Name is the same Baron of Hell

Also when creating a game what does the hourglass and candle mean. I'm guessing turn length and game length but I'm not sure which is which.

Ok I got it worked out. The hourglass is how much time each player has to play the entire game, it is like chess clock. If you run out of time you forfeit. The candle is how long the shows up in the multiplayer section so people can join the game.

Been a while...

EDIT: Here's a link to voting page.

Jaipur for the win!

I really should play Through the Ages.

Sending friend requests on Through the Ages from Keithustus. So excited this will be on Steam too soon, since it kills my poor iPad battery.

Note: I'm super busy so really can't play often, but a busy friends list is better than just my wife there.

Do we have a GWJ alliance in Age of Rivals?

Since I unlocked all the cards I haven't played as much. Struggling through the challenges. On Xiong's Bridge Hard now and can't crack it.

I just discovered this game, and I’m loving it. Anyone else playing? Doesn’t seem to be much discussion of it in the forums.

I have it and enjoyed at launch, but not really played since. Now you've reminded me might give it another go.

Just bought Through the Ages on PC through Steam within the first 1.5 hours of it appearing there.

Feels good!

$9.9x instead of $15 until April 2. Cross-platform with the mobile versions.

Mmm... I'm tempted to double-dip; I've been getting a lot of play out of the iOS version!

Well you know Apple will eventually scrap all current games and you'll need to keep an old device just for it, meanwhile the reliable PC has no such problems, so go forth and dip.

What's your name on the game? We should friend. I'm Keithustus as everywhere.

All right, you talked me into it! Bought on Steam!

I'm WolverineJon on there too. I'd be up for an online game with some GWJers! I've never done one of Through The Ages before.

Keithustus, sent you a friend request!

Yep, PC sure supports old games. That's why we need sh*t like DOSbox

It's up to app developers to keep their apps updated to keep running on newer systems, just as it is on PC. To act like it's some nefarious plot is just plain silly. Hell, this exact same thing happens on all consoles.

The console comparison is fair and is one of the reasons I didn't buy a console this generation. I don't think your dosbox comparison is fair though. If I buy a game that released today on the PC, I feel confident I'll be able to play it 5-10 years from now on my PC. No update is going to be released that is going to make that game unplayable on my current system. I can't say that about the iPad. At any moment, apple could release an OS update that makes all games unplayable unless developers take the time to update their apps.

DOSbox lets you *easily* install and run games up to about 35 years old, if not a few more. I can play games from the Windows 95 period without it - that's 22 years, right? iPad stops me from playing games that were released as recently as what, 2016? 2017 even? I'd say PC wins that comparison, even if you have download a few megabytes and tweak a setting or two to get a game that's more than twice as old as IOS to run...

The newish Asmodee version of Carcassonne is a little under half price on Android. £3.39 over here.

Edit 6 days left.

Double edit. Hang in its a full on Asmodee sale. Some games as much as 75% off by the looks. A couple tempters in there...

There is an Asmodee sale on the iOS App Store as well. Most titles priced at $2 or $3 dollars. US. I’m going to pick up Pandemic for $2 US. Looking into some of the other games as well.

I never thought of myself as a "Pandemic gamer", but the app is amazing!!

And Carcasonne is on sale on Steam, too...

Asmodee have released Onitama on mobile. Have given it a quick go.

Base game is free, looks great and plays nicely on phone.

You can spend £1.99 to add the Sensei's Path expansion.

A few more pence can be spent on a couple optional skins, but that's it. No more IAP other than that.

Free base game, pay a little for optional expansions? I quite like this f2p model!

Sweet, one of my games always in my travel bag. How robust is multiplayer?

Not sure yet. Only downloaded over lunch and played a few solo. I think you have to earn a few karma points Vs ai before can you can join online MP.

You can also play pass and play.
