It’s a good week to be a Switch owner, because we’re finally getting the only kart racing game that matters. That’s right, Hello Kitty Kruisers drops this week.

This week I’m genuinely torn. On the one hand, an XBox 360 game that I didn’t know existed inexplicably gets a PC release. Bullet Witch looks like the sort of game that’s right up my alley: a combination of Gungrave: Overdose (which was awesome) and Bayonetta (which was adequate) and a metacritic score that only I could love. The only way it could be more up my alley would be if John St. John were involved somehow.

On the other hand, The Swords of Ditto looks like a neat little action RPG with a good sense of humor, and it’s coming out of Devolver, which is climbing my personal ranks to become my favorite developer/publisher. They turned The Legend of Zelda into a roguelike, with new adventures being procedurally crafted for every new hero. Basically, it gives you the experience of playing all of the 2D Legend of Zelda games in sequence in an extremely compressed time frame, thus solving the only problem I’ve ever had with Legend of Zelda games: their exhausting length.

But since The Week Ahead isn’t about letting me fly my bad-game freak-flag (I already have a weekly venue for that!) and since Bullet Witch already had its bite at the apple ten years ago, I’ll go ahead and tap The Swords of Ditto as my pick for the week. May both of them see the success they deserve.

My pick for the week is sort of the equivalent of closing my eyes and pointing at something. Whatever my finger lands on, that's the pick.

I almost chose to just skip this week as most of the games of interest are re-releases of some form. Now you, too, can play Darkest Dungeon and South Park: The Fractured But Whole on your Switch. You, too, can enjoy Death Road to Canada on your console platform of choice. Finally, Cosmic Star Heroine makes its way to PS Vita (with cross-buy availability).

With a heavy sigh, my eyes scanned the lines of nondescript titles on Steam, by chance stopping on one key title. Mechsprofit: Mech Tycoon Simulator. I feel as if I am cheating, for it is not a final release but the start of its Early Access. Nonetheless, the idea of a game where you are a Mech manufacturing company on the cusp of the industry's revolution is just too darn enticing. Plus, I know plenty of you out there may want to eat that up regardless of Early Access or final release status. So my pick of the week – a most unlikely pick of the week – goes to Mechsprofit: Mech Tycoon Simulator.

Is there a needle in this week’s haystack? Subaeria has a neat gimmick of tricking enemies into killing each other, but also looks too bullet hellish for my gnarled hands. To Leave on PS4 is a pensive platformer with art from the album cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and music and themes to match. Plus, you’re a dude holding a door.

Otherwise, it’s a lucky dip. As I rummage through the release list, one game glistens just a little brighter than the others. Maybe it’s that extra degree of polish in the presentation, or maybe it’s just because it’s not 8-bit or chiptuned. Basically, what doubtingT said about The Swords of Ditto is applicable again in this instance. If only there were a quicker way to write that.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Whelp, it's finally happened, my brain is fully broken. I read through the entire list and the names of all these games and they've stopped registering as things anymore, but instead are merely a jumble of words. There are probably games in the list I want. There are probably games in the list I have on my wishlist. There are probably games in the list I've already bought, but I can no longer tell.

I am a broken, broken man.

Battletech this week. I was on the fence until I saw Shawn and Sean's video, when it became a day one perch. So thanks, I think.

Okay, re-read the list. Two things jump out:

Earth Defense Force 4.1: Wing Diver The Shooter

Holy snap they made a vertical shmup in the EDF universe. Shame they didn't make it a horizontal scroller and call it "Super EDF" because they probably would've immantized the eschaton.

Ahem, in other news KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch looks dope, but apparently it's priced twice as much as the iOS release with less in it.

Can companies please stop doing this on the Switch? This is a digital-only release that costs more and has less. WTF?!?

See, I read the list twice and didn't even notice it!

ConflictMachinery is my game of the next few months and I'm kind of mad it doesn't unlock until tomorrow. But not, like, super mad. More like slightly inconvenienced.

You are a golden god for it haven taken this long.

There is only one game this week. Watching Avengers: Infinity War. Over and over and over again.

That’s funny, because I make the list every week and I’m...

...oh crap.

Yup:

Frostpunk is out today. This is a city builder from the devs behind This War of Mine:

That's been on my wishlist for a couple months. Cripes.

Yeah, I completely didn't realize it either. Granted, given my console peasantry I tend to skip right down to Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, with merely a skim of the PC. This ought to teach me, though. It doesn't matter how many "I Made a Memetastic Game Simulator" there are, ya never know that one title that everyone else is looking forward to that's worth a mention.

EDIT: Death Road to Canada was evidently delayed following the attack in Toronto.

Battletech is pre-installed at home.

I'm ready.

(I'm not ready, of course. I don't have that kind of slack in my schedule. But hope springs eternal, yeah?)

Thinking back to why I didn't put my own bit in for Battletech, I'm pretty sure it's because I wanted to finish editing and play more Shadows ofs Mordors, which I finally installed this weekend.

That is always the right decision.

I would have recommended Battletech, if my PC had the grunt to play it.

Update: Battletech is good!
